Overview
Verso Skincare is a Swedish skincare brand founded in 2013 by Lars Fredriksson [7]. Built around a proprietary vitamin A complex the company calls Retinol 8, it takes a deliberately minimalist, science-led approach: a short list of carefully chosen ingredients rather than long formulations. The brand's name is Latin for "reverse," which Verso ties to its aim of helping skin "turn back and function as it once did."
The company sells across more than 25 countries through its own site, online retailers and high-end department stores, and has been backed since 2020 by the Nordic private-equity firm eEquity [7]. It remains active, with a current catalogue and recently added ingredients.
Origin and founders
Verso was launched in 2013 by Lars Fredriksson, who serves as founder and chief executive. According to the company, the brand grew out of new scientific insights into the rejuvenating properties of its vitamin A complex, Retinol 8. Before establishing the brand, Fredriksson had the ingredient clinically tested under the supervision of Karolinska University Hospital in the early 2010s to confirm its efficacy.
Fredriksson framed the venture in ambitious terms, describing an intent to "start and lead a skincare revolution" built on a science-first mindset and a refusal to compromise on quality. His stated conviction underpins the brand's mission: that everyone should use at least one vitamin A product in their daily routine.
Philosophy and positioning
Verso positions itself around simplicity. The company describes its formulas as minimalistic and multifunctional, with a low ingredient count and no unnecessary fillers, favouring proven efficacy over volume. Products are organised through a numbering system, from N°1 Cleanse through N°10 Hand & Body, intended to make a routine easy to assemble.
The brand sits at the prestige end of the market. Independent review site The Dermatology Review notes that Verso has been sold through luxury department stores including Barneys New York, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus [8], and describes its typical customer as someone seeking scientifically formulated, low-ingredient products, particularly for mature skin and signs of ageing.
Products and innovation
Verso's formulations centre on two proprietary technologies. Retinol 8, a vitamin A derivative that The Dermatology Review identifies as retinyl retinoate [8], is described by the company as "eight times more effective than standard Retinol while reducing the risk of irritated skin by 50 percent" — a marketing claim presented across its product pages rather than an independently verified figure. The second, NEAR 1 (Niacinamidoethyl Retinoate), is a patented molecule that binds niacinamide to vitamin A; the company presents it as the result of roughly eight years of research and says it is found exclusively in Verso's own range [9].
These technologies run through the brand's signature products, among them the Super Facial Serum, Super Eye Serum, Night Cream and Daily Glow. Alongside its hallmark vitamin A ingredients, Verso's catalogue draws on niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamin C, ceramides and, more recently, exosomes. The Nordic publication Scandinavian MIND has reported that Verso's formulations were developed with formulation partners in Italy [9].
Sustainability
Verso frames sustainability partly through its minimalist philosophy, arguing that routines built on fewer, high-performing products reduce waste. On packaging, the company says it introduced its first post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic packaging in 2022 and targets 75 percent recycled plastic. It also reports reducing outer packaging by 14 percent and dropping cellophane wrap, which it says saves more than 200 kilograms of plastic a year. The company states that it aims to act on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Dermatology Review notes that Verso has described itself as cruelty-free since its start [8]; no third-party sustainability or cruelty-free certifications are listed on the brand's own sustainability page.
Ownership
In January 2020 the Nordic digital-growth private-equity firm eEquity invested 30 million Swedish kronor in Verso to support global expansion, with Fredriksson remaining the largest shareholder [7]. At the time of the investment the company reported turnover of about 5 million euros, eight employees and 22 products, with distribution across more than 25 countries, over 200 offline retailers and 50 e-tailers.
The brand's own site does not name a corporate parent [1]. The Dermatology Review identifies the operating company behind Verso as Selego [8]; the eEquity announcement confirms the private-equity growth stake rather than a full acquisition [7].
Current status
Verso remains active. Its direct-to-consumer site carries a current product range with recently added ingredients such as exosomes, and the brand continues to operate the international distribution and private-equity backing established over the 2010s.
