Overview
Vila Hermanos is a Spanish home-fragrance and candle maker based in Atzeneta d'Albaida, in the Valencia region. The company traces its origins to 1884, when it was founded in nearby Albaida as a traditional wax factory, or cerería, producing artisanal candles [1]. It remained in the hands of the Vila family for well over a century before changing ownership in 2011, after which it was repositioned as a maker of high-end scented candles, diffusers and, more recently, eau de parfum. The business is active, with a steady stream of new collections and trade-show appearances through 2025 and into 2026 [2].
The company operates under the legal name Vila Hermanos Cerería SA and runs a second, more premium label, Ladenac Milano. It works both under its own name and as a private-label producer for other brands, and describes its craft as the making of fragrances tied to memory and emotion.
Origin and history
The firm began in 1884 in the town of Albaida, in the interior of Valencia province, as a maker of artisanal beeswax candles bleached in the town itself [3]. According to Spanish editorial accounts, those early candles found their way into churches, noble households and royal courts. The Vila family ran the company for roughly 127 years, keeping its focus on traditional candle production.
That long period of family ownership ended in 2011, when the business was bought by the entrepreneur Patrick Douenat, together with his partner Stefano Chirico, from the Vila family [3]. (The brand's own English-language press page spells the name "Patrick Douenant", while several independent Spanish editorial sources render it "Patrick Douenat"; this article uses the more widely attested spelling.) At the time of the sale, the company was operating at a loss on revenue of about 1.4 million euros [3]. Douenat, described in Spanish coverage as an entrepreneur "born in the Caribbean and educated in Europe," steered the company away from commodity candles and toward high-end home fragrance.
The repositioning coincided with sharp growth. By 2018, the Spanish business newspaper Expansión reported that revenue had reached roughly 8 million euros, an increase of about 471 percent since the acquisition [4]. At that point the company had set out plans to enter the South Korean and Chinese markets.
Ownership and structure
Since 2011 the company has been led by Patrick Douenat, who is described in editorial profiles as "a perfumer by vocation and an economist by training." Alongside the Vila Hermanos label, the group runs Ladenac Milano, positioned as its premium brand and described in Spanish coverage as Douenat's personal project, blending Spanish craftsmanship with French savoir-faire and Italian style. Ladenac operates a flagship store at Conde de Aranda 3, in Madrid's Salamanca district [4].
The two-brand structure is deliberate. In Expansión, Douenat framed the split as a way to protect the identity of each label rather than dilute it across a single, sprawling range.
Products and positioning
Vila Hermanos makes scented candles, reed and room diffusers, room sprays and, since 2025, eau de parfum. Its catalogue is organised into more than twenty named collections — among them Apothecary, Cameo, Valencia Special Edition and Winter Solstice — and the company says it has developed a library of over 150 home perfumes. Fragrances are grouped by olfactory family, from citrus and floral to woody, chypre and gourmand.
The house presents itself as a pioneer of scented candles made with natural vegetable wax. Its formulas, the company states, use no paraffin and no palm oil, and its candles are made with natural cotton wicks. Recent seasonal collections have leaned on green and fresh notes such as matcha tea and mint alongside botanicals including thyme, eucalyptus, rosemary, sage and bergamot. The Valencia Special Edition, in particular, is built around orange blossom as a symbol of the region's Mediterranean heritage.
For fragrance development, the company says it works with major French perfume houses and with internal and international perfumers, or "noses." Beyond its own labels, it also carries out private-label work for other brands; Spanish editorial coverage names Armani and Moncler among its custom clients [5].
Philosophy
The company frames its work in emotional rather than purely functional terms. "Fragrances are memories and memories are priceless," reads one of its statements, and Douenat has put the same idea more bluntly in interviews: "I don't sell candles — I sell a sensation, a memory, this feeling that comes to mind." Its stated approach is one of artisanship "with no shortcuts," with quality as the guiding principle and an emphasis on natural materials drawn from its long candle-making tradition.
Sustainability
Vila Hermanos ties its environmental claims to its use of natural vegetable wax in place of paraffin, and to the exclusion of palm oil. The company reports that it holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, the latter covering environmental management, and that it has installed a photovoltaic self-consumption system at its Valencia facility under a public renewable-energy programme. These certifications are stated on the company's own materials.
Recognition
In 2025 the company was named "Multinational of the Year in High-End Home Perfumery and Luxury Candle-Making" by the Spanish newspaper La Razón, an award it announced in May 2026 [2]. It has also reported nominations in the Academy of Perfume Awards 2026, in the Best Men's Design and Best Home Fragrance categories.
Current status
Vila Hermanos is active. The company maintains a regular news cadence — roughly eleven posts between late 2024 and mid-2025 — covering new collections, trade fairs such as Intergift, and awards. It launched its first eau de parfum collection in 2025, extending its range beyond home fragrance into personal perfumery, and marked its 140th anniversary in 2024.
