Vita Liberata is a sunless-tanning and body-cosmetics brand founded in 2003 by Alyson Hogg in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland [1]. The company is once again owned by its founder, who bought it back in 2024 after six years under American parent Crown Laboratories, and relaunched the range in April 2025.

Hogg has described selling part of the business as the hardest thing she had done, citing Northern Irish cultural expectations to keep family firms in family hands. In 2024 she bought Vita Liberata back from Crown Laboratories and resumed her role as chief executive [2]; the purchase price was not disclosed.

Vita Liberata was independently owned by its founder from its start until 2018, when Crown Laboratories acquired it. It operated under Crown Laboratories until 2024, when Alyson Hogg reacquired the company and returned it to founder ownership.

The company centres its identity on natural-looking results and skincare-led tanning, arguing that hydrated skin produces colour that fades evenly. Its stated mission is to "provide tanning options that focus on skin health, skin safety and affordable products that are accessible for all" [6]. Hogg has said she returned to the brand to offer alternatives to harmful sun exposure. The brand uses the tagline "Confidence Applied."

Vita Liberata's range spans self-tan mousses, lotions and gradual tanners, face tanning products, body makeup and application tools. Among its signature products are Body Blur, a body makeup for skin finish, the pHenomenal 2-3 Week Self Tan Mousse, and The Glaze Peptide Tanning Serum. Its formulations are built around plant-derived DHA, the active behind sunless colour, together with ingredients the brand highlights such as hyaluronic acid, liquorice, marula and aloe [6].

The company describes several proprietary technologies, including its Odour Remove system aimed at reducing the characteristic self-tan smell, plus the pHeno2 and Trystal3 formulations mentioned in its business history. Vita Liberata says its extracts are natural, certified organic and Ecocert approved [7], and the brand is certified cruelty-free by PETA [7]. It is not entirely vegan: third-party ingredient reviews note that while some products are vegan, others contain ingredients such as hydrolyzed silk that may be animal-derived, so vegan status is product-specific rather than brand-wide [7].
