Overview
Wibo is a Polish colour-cosmetics brand founded in 1989 in Kartuzy, on Poland's Baltic coast [1]. It was started by the married couple Wiktor and Jadwiga Bożena Adamczak, and its name comes from the first two letters of their first names — Wiktor and Bożena [5]. The company describes itself as the market leader in colour cosmetics in Poland, and its products range across eye, face, lip and nail makeup.
The brand remains active and family-run. It is owned by WIBO Adamczak sp. k., which reported over 170 employees and revenue of 223.35 million PLN in 2024, and which also owns the sister brands Lovely and NAM [6].
Origin and founders
Wibo was founded during Poland's post-communist economic transformation, when consumer goods were still scarce. In a later trade-press interview, Jadwiga Bożena Adamczak recalled the couple's modest starting point: "I was working in a tax office and my husband was CEO of Społem. We decided together to start a cosmetics company" [5]. She described the venture as her own initiative, driven by a wish for an accessible Polish cosmetics brand.
The company's first products were nail lacquers in three classic colours, a response to the limited choice available in the early-1990s Polish market. From that narrow start, the range gradually widened into mascara and eye, face and lip products alongside the original nail lines.
History and milestones
Through the 2000s and 2010s the company grew from a small manufacturer into an established national brand. In 2008 it received two Polish market honours, "Perła Rynku Kosmetycznego" (Pearl of the Cosmetics Market) and "Laur Konsumenta" (Consumer's Laurel) in the discovery category [8].
By 2014 the combined Wibo and Lovely brands offered around 120 product lines, corresponding to roughly 500 individual EAN codes; production and warehouse space had grown past 4,000 square metres, and exports had risen to about 25 percent of sales, up from 19 percent the year before [5]. Export markets at that time included Germany, Hungary, Tunisia, Greece, Iran and Russia, and the company also carried out private-label production for Western European brands.
Ownership
Wibo is owned and operated by WIBO Adamczak sp. k., a family limited partnership based in Kartuzy [4]. The company sits within a portfolio of three brands aimed at different consumer segments: Wibo as the flagship makeup line, Lovely for a younger audience, and NAM, a later addition positioned as vegan and cruelty-free [9]. The founders' daughters have taken on growing responsibility in the business, which the family has described as intended to remain family-run across generations.
Reported employee figures differ by period: a 2014 trade article put the workforce at around 150, while a later business profile records over 170 [5][6]. The two figures are consistent as points on the same growth curve rather than a contradiction.
Philosophy and positioning
Wibo positions itself as a drugstore, or mass-market, brand — trend-led colour cosmetics sold at accessible prices. According to the company, its products follow "the latest trends in colours and textures," with prices "for all budgets." Its stated mission is to create cosmetics that combine good quality with an affordable price. The corporate arm summarises the company under six values — quality, innovation, expertise, growth, passion and loyalty — under the tagline "Powered by passion, created with colours" [4].
Products and innovation
Wibo's range covers eyes, face, lips and nails, along with makeup accessories. The brand's best-known product is its mascara: the company's own material describes its Queen Size Lashes mascara as "famous" and notes that several of its mascaras have been named best product of the year in Poland. Other products the brand highlights include its French Manicure nail polish, the Skin Perfector foundation, Juicy Shot gloss and Quattro eyeshadows.
The brand states that it is completely cruelty-free; PETA lists Wibo in its cruelty-free database, noting that neither its ingredients nor its finished products are tested on animals [7]. Manufacturing takes place at the company's site in Kartuzy, Poland [4].
Recognition and press
Beyond its 2008 market awards, Wibo has been the subject of Polish trade coverage, including a feature in the cosmetics trade journal Wiadomości Kosmetyczne on the family's business and its growth [5]. The trade publication Global Cosmetic Industry covered the launch of a collection under the company's NAM sub-brand [9].
Current status
Wibo is active. It maintains current brand and corporate websites, and Polish corporate records report 2024 revenue of 223.35 million PLN and a workforce of over 170. The company describes itself as having more than 35 years of expertise in colour-cosmetics production. Distribution spans Polish drugstore chains, including Rossmann, and more than 500 points of sale in Spain, alongside its private-label manufacturing for other European brands.
