Overview
Woods of Windsor is an English fragrance, bath and body brand based in Windsor, Berkshire, and today owned by the Indian conglomerate Wipro Limited through its Yardley of London subsidiary [2]. It makes eau de toilettes, soaps, hand creams and home fragrances built around English floral notes such as lavender, lily of the valley and rose. The company traces its heritage to a Windsor apothecary that it dates to 1770, though the modern consumer brand was assembled only in the early 1970s.
The brand remains active. Its website was live and trading seasonal collections as recently as a 2024 archive snapshot, and its product lines continue under Wipro/Yardley ownership.

Origin & founders
According to the company, the story begins with a small apothecary "in the shadow of Windsor" that it dates to 1770, serving the townsfolk of the town along with the Royal family and its visitors. The names of the original apothecary's proprietors are not recorded in the brand's own account.
The modern brand has a more precisely dated origin. Woods of Windsor says that in 1970, at the old Woods Pharmacy, "a treasure trove of centuries-old recipes and prescription books" was discovered, and that these formulas inspired a new range of fragrances and bath products. The result is a founding date the brand presents two ways: it markets itself as "made in England since 1770" [1], while the commercial products that carry the name were first launched in 1971 [2], with lavender and lily of the valley cited elsewhere as the first two fragrances [4]. The 1770 date describes the apothecary heritage; the consumer brand itself dates to the early 1970s.
History & milestones
The first perfumery products — pot pourri and china pomanders using lavender and rosebuds — went on sale from the Woods pharmacy in 1971. By 1974 the range had reached high-end London retailers including Harrods and Liberty's, and the line expanded through the 1970s with a first room fragrance in 1976 and drawer liners in 1978. In 1981 the company added a gentlemen's collection, using an 1850 etching of Windsor Castle for its packaging logo.
The 1980s brought its widest reach. Woods of Windsor won a Queen's Award for Export in 1983 and a second in 1989. By 1985 the company reported exporting to 40 countries, and in 1984 its Windsor pharmacy was converted into a flagship shop.
Ownership then changed hands several times. The Knowles family, who had run the business, sold it to a management buyout in 2000. The Lornamead Group, a personal-care company that invests in heritage brands, acquired Woods of Windsor in 2006 [2]. In 2012 the brand, together with Yardley London, was acquired by Wipro Limited [2]. Woods of Windsor was relaunched in July 2016 with new packaging.
Ownership
Woods of Windsor is owned by Wipro Limited, which acquired it in 2012 alongside the British heritage brand Yardley London [2]. Corporate control sits within Yardley of London Ltd, which appears in the brand's site copyright line. The 2012 purchase followed the earlier 2006 acquisition by The Lornamead Group.
Philosophy & positioning
The company positions itself as "quintessentially English," drawing on "the flowers, plants and essential oils that can be found in England's historical parks, gardens and stately homes," under the tagline "Natural Beauty from the Gardens of England" [1]. In its responsible-business material it describes itself as one of England's oldest purveyors of quality perfumes and soaps and stresses that its floral fragrances and body products are "affordable and accessible" — a positioning that sits alongside its "luxury" product language.
Products & innovation
The range spans eau de toilettes, bath and shower gels, hand creams, hand washes, dusting powders and luxury soaps. Signature scents draw on English florals, with lavender and lily of the valley among the earliest fragrances [4]. More recent additions include the Blackberry and Thyme Gardeners Range and a home-fragrance collection produced with the charity English Heritage — three scents, Tudor Rose, Citrus & Basil, and Sea Spray & Freesia, each tied to an English landmark [4].
On ethics, the brand carries a "Vegan & Cruelty free" badge on its site [1] and states that, as of 2020, 100% of its products are manufactured in the UK [3]. Its responsible-business policy commits to a no-animal-testing supplier requirement, waste reduction, and PEFC-certified paper and card packaging, and notes membership of the UK cosmetics trade body CTPA.
Recognition
Current status
The brand is active. Its website was live and promoting seasonal ranges in a March 2024 archive capture, and it continues to trade under Wipro/Yardley ownership. One maintenance note: at the time this article's sources were gathered, the live woodsofwindsor.co.uk site returned an expired SSL certificate, so its pages were retrieved through the Internet Archive; this is a minor upkeep signal rather than an indication that the brand has closed.
