Overview
YVRA is an Amsterdam-based niche fragrance house founded in 2015 by Yvo van Regteren Altena [2]. A former lifestyle journalist, van Regteren Altena built the brand around what it calls "a fragrance for the well-travelled nose," positioning its scents as timeless and refined rather than trend-driven. The house remains active and independent, selling a line of highly concentrated perfumes through its own site and a network of European niche retailers.
The brand is styled in all capitals as YVRA, an acronym of the founder's initials. Its domain and product numbering reference 1958, the founder's birth year, rather than any company founding date [4].
Origin & founders
Yvo van Regteren Altena grew up surrounded by scent, and the company traces his interest in fragrance to childhood, when he would identify perfumes from his grandmother's collection. He later worked as a lifestyle journalist and travelled widely through hotels, restaurants and fashion houses, an experience the brand describes as sharpening his attention to the aromatic character of places.
Through that work he came to know several established perfumers. According to the company, he was encouraged by François Demachy, then of Dior, and Jean-Claude Ellena of Hermès to create a fragrance of his own [4]. A retailer interview also names Jacques Polge among the perfumers he met [6]. He began developing his first scent in 2013 and launched it, YVRA 58, in 2015 [4].
The 1958 that appears in the brand's domain (yvra1958.com) and in its fragrance numbering is the founder's birth year, not the founding date. The company dates the brand itself to 2015; the 1958 reference derives from van Regteren Altena's initials and year of birth [4].
Philosophy & positioning
YVRA presents its scents as an alternative to synthetic, aggressive perfumes, favouring compositions it describes as sensual and sophisticated. The house sums up its approach in a line from its about page: "A great fragrance should feel timeless, not trendy. Refined, but never cold. Complex enough to surprise you, every time you wear it" [2].
The founder frames longevity as a working principle. "I only use ingredients and formulas that will stand the test of time," he told one retailer, adding that he layers favourite materials at varying levels until he arrives at a formula he likes [6]. The fragrances are meant to become part of the wearer's daily life rather than to overwhelm.
Products & innovation
The house builds its range around full-size 100ml fragrances, sold alongside travel sets, discovery sample sets, and bath and shower gels. Its signature scent, YVRA 58, opens with Calabrian citrus, orange flower and ginger before moving through herbaceous notes to a close of cedar, patchouli and tonka bean [4]. Later releases include YVRA 91 (L'Essence de L'Explorance), described by the brand as its fifth fragrance, and YVRA 65, presented in honour of Porfirio Rubirosa. Each fragrance pairs a number with a French subtitle.
The fragrances are produced in Amsterdam and are vegan and highly concentrated, according to a founder interview [6]. Over time the founder has extended the range beyond perfume into products such as hand and body wash.
Recognition
Current status
YVRA is active and independent. Its blog carried press posts dated as recently as February 2024, and the company describes itself as having grown "into an internationally appreciated niche brand" over the course of a decade [3]. Its fragrances are distributed across several European niche retailers and it has appeared as an exhibitor at the Pitti Fragranze trade fair in Florence. Its parent company, if any, is not publicly recorded.
