Summary

Overview

Zaharoff is an American niche fragrance and grooming house with roots in Chicago and a current corporate address in Paris. It grew out of a family of designers and merchants: the Chicago fashion label House of Zaharoff, founded by designer Mariana Zaharoff in the late 1970s, and her son George Zaharoff, who built a women's fragrance business in the 1990s before relaunching the name as a fragrance house in late 2018.

Because of these layered origins, sources place the brand's beginning differently. Fragrantica dates the modern fragrance house to 2018, when the relaunch arrived with Signature Pour Homme [8]; the company's own heritage page traces the lineage back to the late-1970s fashion label and to the first Zaharoff fragrance, Pour Femme, in 1994 [2]. Glowpedia records 2018 as the founding year of the fragrance brand now in circulation, while treating the earlier fashion and fragrance ventures as its prehistory.

Origin & founders

Mariana Zaharoff began her career in the basement of her Chicago home in the late 1970s and built House of Zaharoff into a clothing label distributed to retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. According to accounts of her work, she designed for dignitaries and celebrities, created wardrobe pieces for the television series Dallas and Dynasty, and made the wedding gown worn by Patti Davis, daughter of President Ronald Reagan.

Her son George Zaharoff carried the name into fragrance. He launched a women's line in the 1990s — Pour Femme in 1994 and Pour Homme in 1999, both composed by perfumer Claude Dir — and, by one account, grew the business into a roughly three-million-dollar operation before it wound down [9]. A 2013 profile in Crain's Chicago Business also notes that George is a great-grandson of Sir Basil Zaharoff, the historical arms dealer, an ancestral connection the brand's later marketing would invoke [9].

History & milestones

The name returned to the fragrance market in late 2018 with Signature Pour Homme, marking the relaunch of Zaharoff as a dedicated fragrance house. In 2021 the company became a member of The Fragrance Foundation, the industry body it continues to cite. Fragrantica records the brand's catalogue growing to dozens of fragrances, with the earliest edition it lists dated to 1997 and the newest to 2026 [8].

Philosophy & positioning

Zaharoff frames fragrance in emotional, storytelling terms. George Zaharoff has described the collection as "more than fragrances — they are prayers. Bottled echoes of humanity. Of stories. Of dreams," and states that "fragrance is the final stroke, connecting the body, mind and the soul." The company presents its founder as "an Old-World Craftsman with a fresh, modern vision," and says its aesthetic is historically inspired yet contemporary, drawing on world history, architecture and travel.

The brand's stated values center on self-expression, craftsmanship, ingredient transparency and sustainability, carried under the hashtag #IAMZAHAROFF. Independent coverage places it in the niche or luxury segment; the fragrance review site Scent Grail characterizes Signature Pour Homme as "old school meets modern age perfumery" and notes pricing that moves into "niche territory" at the larger bottle size [7]. That review positions the range for experienced wearers aged 25 and up, and describes it as marketed to "the experienced gentleman" while potentially wearable by women.

Products & innovation

Zaharoff's output spans fragrance, grooming and body products, small leather goods and fashion accessories. Its fragrances are organized into a Signature Collection and a Basileus Collection, alongside offerings the company labels ZedCreator 1.5 and an NFC Passport Exclusive. Signature fragrances include Pour Homme, Noir, the Royale series (Royale, Royale X, Royale XXX, Royale XXXL), Tabac and Bloom, the last of which the company says combines four types of jasmine oils.

Several perfumers have worked on the house's scents, including Claude Dir, Vincent Kuczinski, Gino Percontino and Mathilde Bijaoui [8]. The company emphasizes raw-material sourcing: it says it uses only sustainably produced Australian sandalwood oil, certified by the state's Forest Products Commission, under a requirement that twelve trees be replanted for every one harvested, and that its oud comes from CITES-compliant managed plantations, since the source tree is now considered endangered [4].

Recognition & press

George Zaharoff has been the subject of interview features in L'Officiel editions for Monaco and Cyprus between 2023 and 2024, including a cover appearance for L'Officiel Cyprus in 2024, and the brand's Signature Bloom was included among fragrances highlighted by L'Officiel Monaco in late 2024 [5]. Earlier, Crain's Chicago Business profiled George Zaharoff's Chicago menswear and fragrance career in a 2013 article titled "The epic comeback of George Zaharoff."

Current status

Zaharoff is an active niche fragrance house. Its most recent recorded activity includes a December 2024 press feature, an expanding catalogue, and new releases dated through 2026 on Fragrantica [5][8]. The brand traces its origin to the United States — its founding family is Chicago-based — while its current corporate and showroom address is listed as 42 avenue Montaigne in Paris; sources therefore differ on where to place the house, with US origin recorded against a French business address [8][1]. It ships internationally, including to Nordic markets, and was previously stocked at Nordstrom.
