Overview
Zarkoperfume is an independent Danish niche fragrance house based in Hornbæk, north of Copenhagen, and founded by Zarko Ahlmann Pavlov. Its perfumes are built around molecular and largely synthetic compositions that the company frames as a meeting point between classic French perfumery and Nordic sensibility. The brand remains active and founder-led, trading through its own webshop and a wide network of niche-fragrance retailers.
The date of the brand's beginning is recorded two ways. Zarkoperfume's own site gives a founding year of 2008, the point at which Pavlov began studying and developing fragrance [1]. Third-party fragrance databases instead date the brand to 2014, the year of its first commercial release [6]. The two figures describe different moments rather than a straightforward disagreement, and both are treated here as milestones.

Origin & founders
Pavlov came to perfumery after nearly eighteen years in high-end fashion retail, where he ran a small group of stores before deciding he wanted a different creative challenge [5]. Formal training proved hard to find. "I tried to get some education in perfume, but it was impossible to get any serious education," he recalled. He read widely, worked with an experienced perfumer for guidance, and relied on an English company to source rare essential oils and molecules for his early experiments.
The stated ambition was rooted in place. "For almost as long as I can remember, I have dreamt of creating a fragrance that captures the singular climate, lifestyle and aesthetics of my native Scandinavia," Pavlov has said [1]. He began producing fragrances in his attic together with his wife, Lene, and closed his fashion stores once demand outgrew that setup.
History & milestones
By the company's account, the work that became Zarkoperfume began in 2008. The first fragrance, MOLeCULE 234.38 — named after the molecular size and weight of its central ingredient — reportedly took around five years to complete and used only base and mid notes [5]. Its commercial arrival is dated to 2014 by third-party databases, which also record the release of Pink Molécule 090.09 that year [6]. According to a founder interview, the brand expanded to 31 countries and thousands of retailers within five years of launch [5].
Philosophy & positioning
Zarkoperfume centres its identity on what it calls a "DNA molecule," a compound the company says appears in every one of its products and develops a distinct scent on each wearer's skin. The brand's tagline, "A perfume is nothing without human skin," is attributed to Pavlov and reflects this emphasis on individual chemistry. The company describes its aim as making "truly special, original perfumes unconstrained by the conventions of mainstream perfume composing," pairing a respect for tradition with an interest in synthetic, molecule-led construction. Third-party coverage has described Pavlov as "Denmark's only practising perfumer" [6].
Products & innovation
The house positions itself at the luxury end of the market, with 100 ml fragrances such as Purple Molécule 070.07, Pink Molécule 090.09, The Muse and Youth, alongside the higher-priced Cloud Collection. On its FAQ the company states that "every fragrance is made purely from molecules, essential oils, and alcohol," with no preservatives or additives. It also says its fragrances comply with EU cosmetic regulations and with IFRA standards, describing them as meeting the 51st amendment for use in Category 4 [3].
A separate line, Zarko Beauty by Oli, extends the family into makeup and nail products. It is run by Olivia Ahlmann, Pavlov's daughter, and is presented as a clean, vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics brand, distinct from the fragrance house [4].
