Summary

Overview

Zoologist is an independent niche perfume house founded in Toronto, Canada, in 2013 by Victor Wong [2]. The company builds each of its fragrances around a single animal, translating a creature's habitat, behaviour and character into scent. Its releases range from the approachable to the deliberately challenging, and it has drawn coverage from mainstream press alongside recognition within the perfume world.

Wong runs the house himself, commissioning independent perfumers to interpret each animal while handling much of the production in-house. According to a 2025 interview, Zoologist sells roughly 20,000 bottles a year to about 54 retailers across more than 25 countries [8], placing it among the better-known names in contemporary indie perfumery.

Origin & founders

The idea for Zoologist came to Wong in 2013, during a period of dissatisfaction with his work as a video game 3D modeler, when he wanted a creative project entirely his own after discovering niche fragrance [8]. He has traced his fascination with animals to hearing Camille Saint-Saëns' "Carnival of the Animals" during primary school in Hong Kong, combined with a lifelong affinity for wildlife.

The house debuted in 2014 with three perfumes: Beaver, Rhinoceros and Panda [8]. From the start, its concept centred on capturing what the company calls "the idiosyncrasies of the animal kingdom" and turning them into scents it describes as "unusual, beautiful, fun and even shocking," with the stated aim of reconnecting wearers with the natural world.

Philosophy & positioning

Each Zoologist perfume is themed around one animal, and the brand's visual identity extends the concept: weighty glass bottles carry illustrations of animals dressed in period attire. Editorial coverage has positioned it as a luxury indie house built on narrative-driven concepts rather than conventional perfumery categories.

The house works with a rotating roster of independent perfumers rather than an in-house nose. Named collaborators include Luca Maffei, Sarah McCartney, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Pia Long, Céline Barel and Antonio Gardoni, among others. Reception to the results is openly polarising: recorded user reactions range from "completely unwearable" to praise for the "utmost quality in terms of materials, construction, and performance" [8].

Products & innovation

Zoologist's catalogue spans creatures from the familiar to the strange, with releases including Squid, Bat, Hummingbird, King Cobra, Rabbit and a Tyrannosaurus Rex among many others. The animal conceit is taken to literal extremes in the compositions themselves — the Harvest Mouse scent, Wong told the Wall Street Journal, "smells like rum-raisin ice cream" [6], while other releases lean into notes such as hay and beer extract.

Hummingbird has been singled out in editorial coverage as one of the "Best Indie/Niche Perfumes of the Last Decade" [8]. The perfumes are sold in formats including deluxe bottles, attars, travel sprays and samples, and are distributed internationally through retailers such as Luckyscent and Bloom Perfumery.

On ingredients, Zoologist states that it avoids materials sourced through animal cruelty — noting that buyers "won't find ingredients from the glands of beavers, musk deer or civets" in its perfumes. With the exceptions of Bee and Hyrax, the company describes its perfumes as vegan and free from natural animal-derived musks, which it says have been replaced with synthetic alternatives "for ethical reasons." It also states that it does not test on animals. The company frames this less as a formal certification than a working philosophy, summarised as not wanting "to harm animals so that we can smell good."

Recognition

In 2020, Zoologist Squid received the Fragrance Foundation's Perfume Extraordinaire of the Year award, presented in New York on 9 October 2020 [5]. The same year, both Bee and Squid were named finalists in the independent category of the Art and Olfaction Awards [7].

The house has also drawn mainstream press attention. In 2023 the Wall Street Journal featured Wong and the brand in a piece on the rise of unconventional niche fragrances [6], and Vogue included a Zoologist scent in a 2020 winter fragrance roundup.

Current status

Zoologist remains active and founder-run. It has continued to release new fragrances into the mid-2020s, including Olm in 2025 and several 2026 editions such as Elephant Sanctuary Edition, Chameleon Tropical Blooms Edition, Lovebird and Koala Joey Edition, all featured on its homepage [9].

Company self-descriptions identify Zoologist as a Canadian house based in Toronto [2]. Its website's region selector defaults to a "United States" setting for US visitors, reflecting currency and pricing rather than the brand's origin [1]; the about page and FAQ both state plainly that the company is located in Canada.
