STADA Arzneimittel AG
2 brands · founded 1895 · GermanySTADA Arzneimittel AG is a German pharmaceutical company headquartered in Bad Vilbel, near Frankfurt. It was founded in Dresden in 1895 as a cooperative pharmacy [5], and today organises its business around what it calls a three-pillar strategy: consumer healthcare (over-the-counter) products, generics, and specialty pharmaceuticals [5]. For a beauty audience, the group is relevant chiefly through its consumer-healthcare arm, which markets a range of dermatological and skin-care brands sold largely through pharmacies.
The company is privately held. Since 31 March 2026 it has been majority owned by the investment firm CapVest Partners, which completed the purchase of a controlling stake from the previous owners, Bain Capital and Cinven [4].
History & milestones
STADA traces its origins to a pharmacists' cooperative established in Dresden in 1895 [5], and it grew over the following century into a broad manufacturer of generic and non-prescription medicines. Much of that expansion came through acquisition rather than organic growth alone.
In 2006 the company made an offer to acquire the Serbian pharmaceutical group Hemofarm for €485 million [5], expanding its footprint in south-eastern Europe. It broadened its consumer-healthcare portfolio in the United Kingdom in 2013 by completing the acquisition of the over-the-counter manufacturer Thornton & Ross for £221.1 million [5], and in 2016 it added Natures Aid, a maker of vitamins, minerals and food supplements [5].
Portfolio & brands
Within its consumer-healthcare division, STADA lists a set of dermatological and skin-care brands, several of which reach consumers through pharmacy shelves. These include Ladival, a sun-protection line; the skin-care ranges Cetraben and Flexitol; and the treatment brands Hirudoid, Nizoral, Hedrin and Eurax [3]. The group's own derma product listing also names further brands such as Duofilm, Metanium, Mitosyl, Multilind, Oilatum, Psilo Balsam, Savlon, Terzolin and Trofolastin [3].
STADA has also continued to add consumer brands over time, including Locobase and Nizoexpert, recorded as part of the portfolio from 2018.
Acquisitions & strategy
STADA's development has been shaped as much by ownership changes as by the brands it has bought. The most consequential shift came in 2017, when the private-equity firms Bain Capital and Cinven took the company private, acquiring roughly 65 percent of STADA through a voluntary public takeover [5]. That transaction removed STADA from public trading and placed it under private-equity control.
The pattern continued in the mid-2020s. On 1 September 2025, Bain Capital and Cinven announced that they had signed a definitive agreement to sell a majority stake in STADA to CapVest Partners, while retaining minority stakes themselves [6]. The transaction closed the following spring: CapVest completed its acquisition of the majority stake on 31 March 2026 [4].
Ownership
STADA is privately owned and is held as a private-equity portfolio company rather than by a strategic pharmaceutical parent. Following the 2017 take-private, Bain Capital and Cinven were the controlling shareholders [5]. Since the completion of the CapVest transaction on 31 March 2026, CapVest Partners holds the majority stake, and according to the sellers' statement Bain Capital and Cinven have retained minority holdings [6][4].
