Summary

Overview

Ach. Brito is a Portuguese soap and fragrance house based in Fajozes, Vila do Conde, near Porto. It was founded in 1918 by the brothers Achilles and Affonso de Brito [2], who built it on the foundations of an older Porto factory where Achilles had spent his early career. The company is known for hand-milled soaps wrapped in colourful Art Deco paper, and for fragrances and grooming products sold across Portugal and exported, by its own account, to more than fifty countries [3].

The brand remains active and is once again controlled by its founding family. In 2022 ownership returned to Aquiles de Brito, a great-grandson of the founder, and the company carried out a rebranding in 2025 [2]. Its present line spans bath and body products and fragrances, organised around collections such as the 1918 and Clássico lines.

Origin and founders

Ach. Brito grew directly out of Claus C. Schweder, described as Portugal's first soap and perfume factory, established in Porto in 1887 by two Germans, Ferdinand Claus and Georges Schweder. The original company traded under the name FPC – Fábrica de Produtos Chimicos Claus & Schweder, Sucrs. Achilles de Brito joined the firm in 1903 and became a partner in 1908. When the German founders left Portugal during the First World War, Achilles and his brother Affonso established Ach. Brito in 1918 and continued making soap and perfume in Porto.

The founding year is sometimes given as 1887 rather than 1918. The company itself dates the brand to 1918, when the Brito brothers set it up, and treats 1887 as the origin of the predecessor factory rather than of Ach. Brito [2]. Wikipedia and some editorial sources list 1887, the year the earlier Claus & Schweder works began [3]; an interview-based Monocle feature likewise describes the family-run company as "dating back to 1887," a reference to that earlier origin [6].

History and milestones

Around 1920 the company worked with the German perfumer Willy Thessen and launched the Patti soap, named in homage to the soprano Adelina Patti, which became one of its best-known products. The date of the Patti line is itself disputed: the brand's own history places the launch around 1920, while the grooming retailer Fendrihan dates the Patti and Lavanda collections to 1929 [2][5].

In 1950 Ach. Brito began cultivating its own aromatic plants and set up a lithography studio for its packaging. The firm marked its fiftieth anniversary in 1968 with a visit from the Portuguese president Américo Tomás. It opened new facilities in Fajozes, Vila do Conde, in 2007 and a factory store in 2009, and reached its centenary in 2018.

Ownership

Ach. Brito belongs to a group built by the founding Brito family, and it is closely tied to Claus Porto, its sister brand. After the German founders returned to Germany, the Brito group took over the former Claus & Schweder factory and continued it under the Claus Porto name as an international line. Sources differ on the year of that takeover: Fendrihan gives 1925, while the regional magazine Tomorrow Algarve records that "by 1924, the Ach Brito group finally acquired the assets of the former Claus & Schweder" [5][4].

According to Tomorrow Algarve, the two brands have long been run as separate entities pursuing different markets — Ach. Brito focused on Portugal and Claus Porto aimed at customers abroad — a split it reports as still in place [4]. The fourth generation of the family entered the business in the 1990s, and in 2022 the company returned to family ownership under Aquiles de Brito.

Philosophy and positioning

Ach. Brito presents itself as a guardian of artisanal craft and Portuguese cultural heritage, describing its work in terms of "artisanal excellence and unique packaging design" and as a "symbol of authenticity and Portuguese cultural heritage" [1]. The company sums up its brand pillars as "legacy, sensuality, inclusion, contemporaneity," and uses the tagline "over a century of fragrances and memories." Its soaps are still produced by milling them by hand and, once dried, wrapping them in colourful Art Deco paper.

Products

The company's range covers bath and body products and fragrances. Long-running products associated with the house include the Patti soap, the Lavanda cologne and the Musgo Real grooming line of shaving and aftershave products. Current collections include the 1918 and Clássico lines and the ARABIS eau de toilette, alongside soaps and hand creams. Manufacturing is based at the company's facilities in Fajozes, Vila do Conde.

Recognition

Ach. Brito was the subject of a 2012 feature in Monocle magazine, titled "Soap opera," which included an interview with the owner Aquiles Brito and described the soaps as recognisable by their vintage-inspired packaging [6]. The brand and its sister company Claus Porto were also profiled together by Tomorrow Algarve in 2024. A frequently cited 2007 inclusion on Oprah Winfrey's "Favorite Things" list applies mainly to the Claus Porto line rather than to Ach. Brito itself [3].

Current status

Ach. Brito is an active, family-owned manufacturer. It runs a live e-commerce store, returned to the founding family in 2022, and undertook a rebranding in 2025 [2]. The company says its products reach more than fifty countries and are sold through major Portuguese retailers.
