Overview
Aedes de Venustas is an American niche perfumery and fragrance house based in New York City. It began in 1995 as a small boutique selling hard-to-find scents, and later grew into a house with its own in-house perfume line. The name is Latin for "temple of beauty." The brand remains active, operating a boutique and online store on Orchard Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side, with fragrance releases continuing through 2023 [1].
The brand occupies an unusually specialized corner of an already specialized market. The fragrance blog Bois de Jasmin described it as "a niche's niche" [4] — a reflection of both its curatorial origins and the small, deliberately limited collection it later built under its own name.
Origin and founders
Aedes de Venustas was founded by Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl [3]. According to accounts of the company's history, the two had been employees of a German shipping company that closed, and they started the boutique partly as a way to remain in New York [3]. They opened in 1995 on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, in the West Village, and began by curating fragrance lines that were difficult to find elsewhere, starting with L'Artisan Parfumeur.
From the outset the shop was positioned less as a conventional store than as a destination. The company describes its founding idea as "providing personalized service and exclusive scents that could not be found in department stores" [2]. The space itself became part of the identity: an About page describes it as "a seductive fragrance sanctuary" of scented candles, potpourris, perfumes and soaps displayed on ornate étagères, while Wikipedia records the interior as a "cabinet de curiosités" evocative of a Victorian drawing room.
Sources agree the boutique opened in 1995, though they differ on the detail: the company's own site states it was "established in March 1995" [2], while Wikipedia gives the year alone without a month [3].
History and milestones
For its first decade Aedes de Venustas operated chiefly as a retailer of other houses' fragrances. That began to change in 2005, when, to mark its tenth anniversary, it worked with L'Artisan Parfumeur on a signature room spray, the "Parfum d'Ambiance." In 2008 that collaboration was adapted into the boutique's first personal fragrance, created by the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour.
In 2012 the house launched its own in-house fragrance line, beginning with an eau de parfum known simply as "Signature," also composed by Duchaufour [3]. The collection expanded over the following years through collaborations with a series of established perfumers, including Ralf Schweiger, Nathalie Feisthauer and, by some accounts, Alberto Morillas [4]. Releases included Iris Nazarena (2014), Copal Azur (2014), Palissandre d'Or (2015) and Pélargonium (2017), among others.
The boutique itself moved several times within Manhattan. After years in the West Village it relocated to a larger space on Greenwich Avenue in 2016, then crossed town to 16A Orchard Street in the Lower East Side in 2018, where it remains.
Philosophy and positioning
The company frames itself as a curated sanctuary for niche perfumery, built around exclusivity and personal service rather than mass distribution. Its stated tagline calls it "the first perfumery dedicated to exclusive, artisanal scents" [1] — a claim presented in the brand's own words. The model has remained largely direct, selling its own line and a selection of other niche houses through the boutique and its website rather than through department stores.
That positioning has been echoed by outside observers. Reviewing the line in 2015, Bois de Jasmin characterized the fragrances as "elegant" and "sophisticated," noting they could read as "cold" but had considerable depth, and summarized the house's ethos as a case where "it's what's inside the bottle that matters the most."
Products and innovation
The in-house collection is small and fragrance-focused, spanning eaux de parfum alongside candles and incense. Among its signature scents are Encens Japonais, Café Tabac, Amnesia Rose and Corfu Kumquat. The "Signature" eau de parfum, built around an unusual rhubarb-and-tomato-leaf accord, has drawn particular attention; in the 2018 edition of his guide Perfumes: The Guide, the critic Luca Turin awarded it four stars and called it a "superlatively clever accord" [5].
The house is also linked to wider developments in niche perfumery through its founders. Co-owner Karl Bradl is a co-founder of Nomenclature, a separate fragrance line centred on synthetic molecules developed for perfumery [3].
Recognition
Aedes de Venustas's most prominent award came in 2014, when Iris Nazarena, composed by Ralf Schweiger, won the Fragrance Foundation's "Perfume Extraordinaire of the Year" [3]. The boutique drew an early following among well-known figures: Wikipedia lists supermodel Naomi Campbell, actress Molly Ringwald and designer Todd Oldham among its early notable customers.
Current status
The brand is active. It continues to run its boutique and e-commerce store at 16A Orchard Street in New York, with its most recent recorded fragrance releases, Amnesia Rose and Café Tabac, dated to 2023 [1]. Its reach is rooted in a single New York boutique, but it ships and distributes more widely, with products sold in Nordic markets.
