Overview
ÆTHER is a French niche fragrance house based in Paris, founded in 2016 by Nicolas Chabot [2][14]. The company builds each of its perfumes around a single synthetic molecule, treating laboratory-made materials as the centre of a composition rather than something hidden behind natural notes. It trades under the legal entity AETHER PARFUM SARL, registered at 18 Rue Sainte Croix de la Bretonnerie in the 4th arrondissement of Paris [6]. The brand remains active: its most recent fragrance, SOLÆR, was released in 2024 [18].
Stylised with a ligature and a recurring "æ" that runs through its product names, the house presents itself under the tagline "Sensual & Conceptual Chemistry." According to the company, it creates "conceptual fragrances using the finest synthetic molecules and natural ingredients to honour the underlying foundations of the modern perfumery."
Origin and founders
ÆTHER was founded in 2016 by Nicolas Chabot, who had revived the historic Parisian house Le Galion the previous year and had earlier worked with Estée Lauder, Givenchy and Christian Dior [15]. The brand's own about page credits Chabot as founder while also listing Jules Dinand as designer and art director, responsible for the bottle [2]; editorial coverage from ÇaFleureBon and a Fragrantica interview consistently name Chabot alone as the founder, with Dinand's role confined to design rather than co-founding the company.
By the brand's account, ÆTHER grew out of Chabot's wish to offer a conceptual perfumery that places synthetic raw materials in the foreground. Rather than using modern molecules to imitate nature, the house frames them as a subject in their own right.
History and milestones
ÆTHER debuted at Esxence in Milan in March 2016, the niche-perfumery trade fair, with five original fragrances — Carboneum, Ether Oxyde, Citrus Ester, Muskethanol and Rose Alcane — composed by perfumers Amélie Bourgeois and Anne-Sophie Behaghel at their Flair studio in Paris [14]. ÇaFleureBon's launch coverage described the result as "a modern paradigm" and "the perfumery of tomorrow."
In 2019 the house returned to Esxence to complete a six-piece Suprae line, adding Aextra, composed by Behaghel, and Aether Suprae, built by Givaudan perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux from the firm's captive molecules [15]. Aether Suprae was named among critic Michelyn Camen's favourites from the fair that year.
Releases have continued since, including SOLÆR in 2024, composed by Julien Rasquinet [18].
Philosophy and positioning
The house describes its work as "a tribute by its creators to synthetic molecules and the frenzy of chemistry," and treats tightened fragrance regulation as a spur to invention rather than a constraint. Each scent is organised around an emblematic molecule — Iso E Super, Ambroxan, Aldambre, musks, methyl laitone and others — chosen to show the expressive range a single synthetic can carry.
A 2021 review in Perfume Posse characterised ÆTHER as "an underground hit that isn't talked about much on the scentbloggosphere" and "an undercover superstar," a positioning consistent with its niche, collector-oriented audience [16].
Products and innovation
ÆTHER's perfumes are sold as 50 ml sprays and named with the house's ligature styling: SUPÆR, built on a high proportion of Iso E Super; XTRÆM, centred on a heavy dose of Ambroxan; ULTRÆ, structured around the aldehydic molecule Aldambre; FLORÆ, a blend of musks with rose, iris, neroli and sandalwood; and SOLÆR, a summer composition using methyl laitone for fig and coconut effects. Later additions include SUGÆR, a sweet amber led by ethyl maltol, and ÆXTRA, a woody musk based on Bacdanol.
The compositions draw on a rotating roster of independent perfumers — among them Marie Duchene, Anne-Sophie Behaghel, Julie Pluchet, Nicolas Beaulieu and Julien Rasquinet — rather than a single in-house nose. The brand has also released NVRMIND, a collaboration with the independent art fanzine NVRMIND paper, which the company says shares its "values of aesthetics, art, disruption, anti-conformity, sensuality and beauty quest" [16].
Distribution
Rather than relying on direct online sales, ÆTHER is distributed mainly through niche perfumeries and independent boutiques. Its store locator lists the strongest presence in Denmark, with stockists across Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and Odense, alongside outlets in France, Sweden and Switzerland [5].
Current status
ÆTHER is active. The house released SOLÆR in 2024, maintains an active Instagram account, and continues to be carried by a network of European stockists [18]. It operates at niche-prestige scale rather than as a mass-market label.
