Overview
Alfaparf Milano is an Italian professional haircare brand founded in 1980 by Roberto Franchina, who started with about ten people in northern Italy making products for the salon channel [1]. It is the flagship name of a larger cosmetics group whose legal parent is Beauty & Business S.p.A., headquartered in Milan with its main operational base in Osio Sotto, near Bergamo [2]. The company presents itself under the line "The Italian House of Beauty."
Today the business operates well beyond a single brand. According to the group, it works across more than 120 countries through 27 branch offices and seven production sites, employing over 2,800 people and serving more than 65,000 professional operators [2]. It remains active, with recent product launches and awards through 2024.
Origin and founders
The company began in 1980 around a small team and a focus on the professional salon market. Its first broad commercial success came in 1989 with the launch of Semi di Lino ("flaxseed"), a line built around linseed extract that remains the brand's signature range [1]. The following year it introduced Evolution of the Color, a permanent hair-colouring product. Alfaparf Milano describes itself as rooted in a family-business culture, placing the people it calls "Alfaparfpeople" — employees, stylists, clients and partners — at the centre of how it works.
History and milestones
International expansion began in the 1990s, first through exports to Spain and Latin America and then through commercial branches and early manufacturing plants in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela. In 2000 the company completed its headquarters in Osio Sotto, a 25,000-square-metre site combining production, warehousing and offices. In the early 2000s it enlarged its Mexican and Brazilian plants and opened further offices across Latin America, the United States and Australia.
In 2009 the group acquired GTS SpA, a company specialising in professional body care, facial products, makeup and aesthetic equipment for beauty institutes [1]. Later growth extended into Eastern and Northern Europe, Africa and Asia, alongside a move into the Brazilian consumer market.
Ownership
The brand's legal parent company is Beauty & Business S.p.A., based in Milan [2]. The group operates through several divisions and a portfolio of brands spanning professional haircare, skincare and aesthetics, beauty equipment and even pet care, and it supplies both branded products and private-label solutions. Within that structure, Alfaparf Milano Professional is the flagship haircare brand. Sister brands under the same group include Benvoleo, a sustainable professional haircare line launched in March 2023, as well as Yellow Professional, Selective Professional and the Eugène Perma Professionnel colour business.
Philosophy and positioning
Alfaparf Milano is positioned in the professional, salon-focused segment of the market. The company says its aim is to "bring beauty into people's lives" through hair- and skin-care products and services that combine quality and creativity with an Italian style it describes as innate. Its manifesto sets out a mission of spreading beauty through four stated pillars: product performance, market agility, Italian heritage paired with global insight, and sustainability, supported by values it lists as excellence, agility and courage, openness, integrity and responsibility, and passion for beauty.
Products and innovation
The Semi di Lino range is consistently cited as the brand's core line across independent reviews and retailer listings [8]. It is built around flaxseed extract and amino acids, and the company markets it using three proprietary technologies: Urban Defence Pro, described as anti-pollution protection; Shine Fix Complex, said to give a 24-hour brightening effect; and Color Fix Complex, a UV filter and antioxidant intended to prolong colour [8]. The brand states that its haircare products are free from sulfates, paraffins and mineral oil — a sulfate-free claim echoed in at least one independent review [9]. Manufacturing is split across Italy, with sites in Mexico and Brazil [1].
Recognition
Alfaparf Milano's public recognition is concentrated in corporate sustainability rather than product awards. The company has been named a "Sustainability Leader" by Statista and Il Sole 24 Ore in 2021 and 2022, and received a 2024 "Leader della Sostenibilità" recognition for environmental reporting and transparency among Italian companies [7]. In editorial coverage, the Italian hairdresser Rossano Ferretti is described as the brand's Global Brand Ambassador [8].
Sustainability
The company began a formal sustainability commitment in autumn 2018, setting a target tied to 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 [5]. It published its first Sustainability Report in 2019 using Global Reporting Initiative standards, established a dedicated sustainability department in 2021, and produces an annual sustainability balance sheet [5]. Its own sustainability page notes that it does not hold specific product certifications such as B Corp, ISO or cruelty-free marks.
Current status
Alfaparf Milano is active. The group reports a large multinational footprint, and recent activity includes the 2023 launch of its Benvoleo sister brand, a 2024 sustainability award, and independent product reviews of Semi di Lino published in 2024 [7].
