Overview
Alûstre is a Danish luxury beauty brand based in Copenhagen, built around the idea of putting real diamond particles into cosmetics. Most editorial coverage dates its launch to March 2023 [12], when it introduced diamond-infused nail polish alongside a set of eight perfumes. The brand spans nail care, colour cosmetics and fragrance, and positions itself in the premium tier. Its name is officially styled with a circumflex as Alûstre; some retailers list it without the accent as "Alustre".
The company was founded by Hans Hornemann, who serves as chief executive, together with his wife Lene Halse Hornemann, an interior designer who leads creative direction [11]. Hornemann's earlier career spanned roughly 35 years in luxury sectors, including the jeweller Cartier and the Danish jewellery group Pandora — a background Wallpaper* summarised by describing Alûstre as a brand "founded by former executives in the jewellery industry" [13]. The brand remains active: in 2024 it won a national newcomer award, expanded into colour cosmetics, and made its travel-retail debut at Copenhagen Airport.
Origin and founders
According to the company, Alûstre was "born from curiosity" as its founder looked for ways to incorporate diamonds into luxury beauty products, working with collaborators to develop a process that began with diamond particles in nail polish before extending across other categories. The brand's atelier sits in a courtyard off Bredgade, near the Nyhavn waterfront in central Copenhagen.
There is some disagreement about when the company began. Multiple editorial and trade sources, corroborated by the brand's own statements, place the consumer launch in March 2023; Vogue Scandinavia reported that Alûstre was "unveiled in March 2023" and still in its "first year of business" when it won an award in April 2024 [12]. The business-data aggregator CB Insights instead lists a founding year of 2021 [15], which most likely reflects an earlier company or legal-entity registration rather than the public brand launch.
Philosophy and positioning
Alûstre's stated philosophy centres entirely on diamonds as the inspiration for its products. The company's mantra is "Illuminate your beauty", and on its philosophy pages it declares that "beauty is reborn through diamonds" and frames its work as redefining colour and performance through diamond particles. It describes its broader purpose as helping customers discover and show their own beauty rather than conform to a single ideal.
The brand presents itself as an "inclusive luxury" proposition and says it took a research-led approach to building its range, reporting that it surveyed 2,634 women and men to shape the line [11]. Editorial coverage has consistently framed it within the wider "Scandinavian beauty" trend. Its commitments pages list nine stated values, among them transparency, accountability, empowerment, sustainability and diversity.
Products and innovation
The core of Alûstre's range is its proprietary DiamondInfused technology, which the company describes as placing cosmetic-grade diamond particles into its formulas. In a trade interview, Hornemann said the brand has "natural diamond dust in every single nail polish flacon" [14], and the company states that each polish contains about a quarter of a carat of ethically sourced diamond particles. Alûstre says the technology has been "tested and proven in external laboratories" and presents the diamond content as functional — improving shine and wear — rather than purely decorative [5]. Wallpaper* described the polishes as using the brand's patented DiamondInfused technology and noted the formulas are marketed as vegan and plant-based, said to be more breathable and less damaging to the nail than many long-wear polishes [13].
The nail line uses a numbered shade system and, according to Wallpaper*, runs to 41 colours alongside base and top coats. Beyond nails, the brand sells hand care, a colour-cosmetics collection — blush, bronzer, highlighter, lip liners, brushes and a diamond-encrusted lip balm — and a fragrance range. The perfumes are produced in Grasse, the town on the French Riviera long associated with the perfume industry, and were created in collaboration with the French perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, known for work at houses including Acqua di Parma and Comme des Garçons [11]. Rather than releasing one scent a year, Alûstre launched eight perfumes at once. For diamond sourcing, the company says it works with a supplier of more than 120 years' standing that adheres to the Kimberley Process certification scheme, the international system intended to keep conflict diamonds out of the supply chain.
On ethics, Alûstre states that it does not conduct animal testing and that its suppliers comply with European rules prohibiting it. The company does not name a specific third-party certification, referring instead to testing by an unspecified "external regulatory body" and describing its products as between 67 and 100 percent natural. It also says it aims to be sustainable across a "360-degree" view of material sourcing, carbon footprint and product and packaging lifecycle.
Recognition
In 2024 Alûstre won "New Danish Brand of the Year" at the Danish Beauty Awards, announced on 22 April 2024 [12]. At the same awards, its fragrance "Spectre 175-225: Privé of Pheromonic Pleasure" was nominated for "Best Niche Scent of the Year". The brand has also been profiled by Vogue Scandinavia and Wallpaper*, and interviewed by the travel-retail trade publication Moodie Davitt Report.
Distribution
Alûstre sells through multiple channels, including its own regional online storefronts and the Danish retailer Matas. In 2024 it made its global travel-retail debut through a partnership with the distributor Gebr. Heinemann at Copenhagen Airport, which the company has described as part of a strategy that leans heavily on pop-up locations to enter new markets [14]. At the time of the Vogue Scandinavia feature the brand reported a presence in eight markets — across the Nordics, the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and Europe — with a stated ambition to reach 35 to 37 markets [11].
Current status
Alûstre is an active brand. Founded in Copenhagen and launched in 2023, it remained visibly in operation through 2024, with an award win, a new colour-cosmetics line, and its first travel-retail listing all dated to that year. Regional online storefronts were live at the time of review. Its current ownership is not publicly documented, and no parent company is named in available sources.
