Summary

Overview

Angela Ciampagna is an Italian niche fragrance house founded by the perfumer of the same name, who develops its scents alongside technical and production manager Enrico Maraffino [6]. The house grew out of an artisanal workshop in Atri, a small hill town in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, and built its identity around the history and legends of that place. Its perfumes are sold as numbered, certificate-bearing extrait de parfum, positioned at the luxury end of artistic perfumery.

The brand traces its roots to the early 2010s but made its public debut in 2015 at Esxence, the Milan trade fair for artistic perfumery, with a collection named Hatria. It remains active: production has since moved to Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands, and the house continued to show new work into the mid-2020s.

Origin and founders

Sources disagree on exactly when the house began. The brand's own account dates an artisanal, family-run workshop in Atri to 2010 [2]. Several Italian editorial profiles instead place the formal founding of the workshop — named Label – Laboratorio Artigianale di Profumeria — in 2011 [9]. The commercial Angela Ciampagna line itself debuted later, in 2015 [6]. A plausible reading is that an atelier formed around 2010, was registered as a workshop in 2011, and launched as a consumer brand in 2015.

Before perfumery, the founder worked with essential oils and aroma production, and she developed her own compositional method through collaboration with technical specialists. She is described as the founder and nose of the house, with Enrico Maraffino as her technical and production partner, a role several Italian sources attribute to a former university associate [6]. One German retailer profile instead describes the pair as the married couple "Enrico and Angela Ciampagna" [5]; the Italian-language sources consistently give the surname Maraffino, and the married-couple description appears to be an error.

The town of Atri supplies both the setting and the names. The debut collection, Hatria, takes its title from the ancient name for Atri, and the brand repeats the local claim that the Adriatic Sea was itself named after the old Hatria dukedom. For years the house operated from a restored early-1900s building near the town's cathedral, the Basilica Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, whose architecture would become its emblem.

History and milestones

After the 2015 Hatria debut, the house released the Cineres collection in 2016, a pair of fragrances — Fauni and Ignes — inspired by the Notte dei Faugni, a pre-Christian winter-solstice rite still observed in Atri. That same year, the earthquake that struck central Italy damaged the Atri facility and forced a relocation and substantial reinvestment [8]. Operations were ultimately moved to Tenerife, where, according to one trade account, the subtropical surroundings shaped fresher compositions than the earlier Italian work.

The catalogue expanded steadily. The De Vita collection followed in 2018, built around the theme of "life, death and miracles" and including the fragrance Miracula; one of its releases, Laetitia, is an alcohol-free scented water described as suitable for children. In 2020 the house introduced a Label collection of nine layering fragrances, intended to be combined to taste, under a Label Fine Perfumes line. In 2023 it presented Virtus at Esxence, its highest-priced collection, with bottles reaching up to 600 euros [14]. In 2024 the founder took part in the Premio Aromata competition in Rome — submitting Virtus, but not winning — and presented a separate Spanish co-project, ThenThere, created with the Iranian musician Rouzbeh Dadbin.

Philosophy and positioning

The house frames perfumery as a form of storytelling. Italian editorial coverage describes each fragrance as a snapshot of thirteenth-century life in Atri, with the collections functioning as episodes in a continuing narrative drawn from the town's churches, ducal palaces and pagan rituals [7]. The founder calls her approach "artisan avant-garde," pairing recovered early-twentieth-century Italian workshop techniques with contemporary composition. She has described her signature as imperfezione — a deliberate willingness to leave irregularities rather than over-polish a scent — and frames perfumery as "an intellectual pleasure" aimed at perfumes of "absolute value."

The brand's emblem is a Gothic rose window, modelled on the one in Atri's cathedral and used as the cap of its bottles. The company describes the motif as a symbol of craftsmanship "capable of expressing profound and imperfect beauty" [2], and presents itself with the tagline "the house of the ancestral art of perfumery." Each bottle is sold as a numbered piece accompanied by a certificate recording its batch, production date and bottle number; the brand likens its individual creations to artworks.

Products and innovation

Angela Ciampagna works exclusively in fragrance, chiefly in the highly concentrated extrait de parfum format. Its scents are generally unisex and lean on materials such as clove, saffron, rose, tuberose, tobacco, Sicilian lemon and incense. Recurring titles include Hatria, a rose-centred opening composition; Ducalis, a salty woody scent cited in Italian coverage as a best-seller; Miracula, a tuberose-and-citrus fragrance described as a flagship; and Ignes, a tobacco-driven scent that one editorial profile called "uno dei capolavori più apprezzati," one of the house's most appreciated works [7].

On the production side, the workshop has adapted methods from food-flavouring rather than conventional perfume manufacture. These include a "sack filtration" technique that, the company says, clarifies a macerate while preserving the raw material rather than degrading it under pressure, alongside slow cold maceration [8]. The brand stresses naturally sourced raw materials, many drawn from around Atri, and handcrafted finishing of caps, labels and boxes by local artisans. Pricing sits firmly in the luxury range, roughly 180 to 600 euros per bottle.

Recognition

Coverage of the house comes largely from specialist perfumery press and retailers, including a feature interview on Basenotes and an extended profile and recovery interview published by SMELL Festival after its 2017 showcase [8]. One Italian editorial profile reports that the brand won a 2018 FiFi award for best niche collection [7]; this claim appears in a single source and is not independently corroborated here. The same profile observes that the house is, somewhat paradoxically, better known abroad than in Italy.

Current status

The brand is active. Its production base is in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, having relocated there from Atri after the 2016 earthquake. The house has continued to develop new work — the Virtus collection in 2023 and the ThenThere co-project in 2024 — and its website has advertised participation in trade fairs into 2026, including Esxence in Milan [1].
