Animale

Animale is a United States fragrance house founded in 1987 by Suzanne de Lyon, whose legal name was Suzanne Frame [1]. A Swiss-born, Houston-based entrepreneur with a background in finance and international trade, she named the brand after the French and Italian word for "animal" or "wild creature," signalling the bold, animalic style of its scents. The debut perfume, also called Animale, arrived in a frosted crystal bottle marked with a lightning-bolt design in shades of hot pink, cobalt blue and turquoise — a piece of late-1980s designer-fragrance styling.

The brand remains in active distribution. It no longer maintains its own website, and its back catalogue is sold mainly through duty-free retail and Latin American outlets such as Sephora Brasil under its current owner, Falic Fashion Group [3]. Animale began as the perfume line of a company called Suzanne de Lyon, Inc., the entity that manufactured the original fragrance [7]. The first scent, launched in 1987, was a chypre-animalic composition built on notes including coriander, neroli and bergamot over a base of civet, oakmoss, musk and patchouli. Its assertive character became the brand's signature; one fragrance-database reviewer summed it up as "brash, hard, tough, take no prisoners."

The founder, Suzanne de Lyon, is credited across fragrance sources as the creative force behind the early line. Later fragrances were developed with perfumers including Steve DeMercado, Caroline Sabas, Loc Dong and Michel Gouges.

The brand expanded steadily after its 1987 debut. Animale for Men followed in 1993, and the paired Animale Animale and Animale Animale for Men launched in 1994. A limited edition, Instinct d'Animale, appeared in 1997 but, according to Fragrantica, never achieved commercial success. The Chaleur d'Animale duo followed in 2000, the men's fragrance Azul in 2005, and the Temptation line — Animale Temptation and Animale Temptation for Men — in 2006.

Over the following years the range grew into a series of gender-paired flanker lines, among them Intense, Sport, Seduction, Instinct, Gold and Sexy. The newest entries recorded in major databases are Animale Gold for Men and Animale Sexy, both from 2021.

Ownership of Animale has changed hands several times. After the founder filed for bankruptcy, the Parlux Group acquired the brand in 1990 [1]. Parlux later sold it in 2004 to an entity recorded by Basenotes as "The Animale Group" [2]. The brand is now developed and distributed by Falic Fashion Group, a fragrance company that the perfume database Parfumo states markets Animale, and which lists the brand among those it handles alongside Perry Ellis, Original Penguin, True Religion, U.S. Polo Assn. and Shaquille O'Neal [3][4]. Falic Fashion Group operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Duty Free Americas, Inc., a duty-free retailer the company describes as running more than 120 shops in international airports across the Americas.

Sources differ on parts of the brand's record. Fragrantica documents the 2004 sale to "The Animale Group" but not the later move to Falic, while Basenotes and Parfumo identify Falic as the current parent. There is also disagreement over the brand's country of origin: Fragrantica's brand sidebar lists Indonesia, whereas Basenotes states the United States [1][2]. United States is consistent with the founder's US-based operations and US court records, and the Indonesian listing appears to be a database error.

The name is further complicated by a separate company. A Brazilian fashion label also called Animale, founded in 1991 and owned by Grupo Soma, operates independently of the US fragrance house and has no documented connection to it [5].

From the outset, Animale was positioned around instinct and sensuality, a theme set by the name itself. The original fragrance was marketed to women as a strong, animalic chypre, and the later catalogue carried that identity into a wide set of flanker lines split by gender. Under Falic Fashion Group, the brand is distributed chiefly through duty-free channels and Latin American retail rather than as a standalone house with its own storefront.

The brand's early history was marked by legal trouble surrounding its founder. In 1989, a federal investigation began into Suzanne Frame and a business associate, Manuel Zepeda, over possible violations of US mail-fraud law, including allegations that company bank funds had been redirected for personal use [6]. The following year, Suzanne de Lyon, Inc. filed for bankruptcy; court records in the matter document proceedings spanning a pre-petition period from September 1989 to March 1990 [7]. The bankruptcy led directly to the brand's acquisition by Parlux.

Animale remains an active fragrance brand, though its profile is now lower than at its late-1980s and 1990s peak. It has no resolvable website of its own, and the most recent new launches in fragrance databases date to 2021. Its continued presence rests on ongoing distribution of the existing range through Falic Fashion Group's duty-free network and Latin American retailers, together with a Brazil-focused social media presence.
