Summary

Overview

Parlux is a United States fragrance house that develops and markets perfume and beauty products under celebrity and designer licensing agreements. It was founded in 1984 by Frederick (Fred) E. Purches, who had previously served as president and chief executive of Helena Rubinstein and Giorgio Armani Fragrances [7]. The company built its business on translating famous names into scents, and it remains an active going concern: WWD estimated its 2025 net sales at roughly $345 million, and it reports an omnichannel presence in more than 80 countries.

Since 2012 Parlux has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Perfumania Holdings, whose principal shareholders are the Nussdorf family [6]. Its current corporate structure operates as Parlux Ltd. and Parlux Holdings Inc., with Stephen Nussdorf listed as executive chairman.

Origin and founders

Fred Purches launched Parlux Fragrances in 1984, drawing on senior experience at Helena Rubinstein and Armani Fragrances [7]. He took the company public in 1986 and stayed on as chairman until his retirement in 2013. In its early decades the company built a portfolio of licensed designer scents, including deals for Perry Ellis, Fred Hayman and GUESS during the 1990s.

History and milestones

The move that reshaped Parlux came in 2004, when then-chairman and chief executive Ilia Lekach proposed licensing Paris Hilton's name for perfume. "Paris Hilton for Women" became a major seller: the line generated more than $70 million in gross sales in fiscal 2006 and, by 2010, had produced some $450 million in gross sales for Parlux — about 42 percent of the company's $148 million revenue that year [7]. The success helped establish the modern celebrity-fragrance model that Parlux has continued to work in.

The company expanded its roster of celebrity licenses through the late 2000s, signing scents tied to Jessica Simpson, Queen Latifah, and, in 2009, Rihanna and Kanye West [7]. In 2021 Parlux launched two of its current flagship lines: Eilish Fragrances with Billie Eilish, and Better World Fragrance House with Drake [9].

Ownership

Parlux was acquired by Perfumania Holdings, Inc. in a deal completed on 18 April 2012 for approximately $118 million, structured as roughly 6.014 million Perfumania shares plus about $62.1 million in cash [6]. Following the merger, Parlux became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Perfumania. The Nussdorf family, described as Perfumania's principal shareholders, financed part of the transaction with $30 million from family trusts [6]. The brand continues to operate under Nussdorf control, with Stephen Nussdorf as executive chairman.

Philosophy and positioning

Parlux describes itself as a house that partners with pop-culture icons, fashion houses and designers to turn a public identity into fragrance and beauty products, handling the full path from concept to global distribution. According to the company, it manages brand strategy, product development, consumer engagement and retail distribution in-house rather than licensing those functions out. On its selection of partners, Parlux says it turns down more collaborations than it accepts, pointing to "authenticity," "passion," and "collaboration" as its filters [9]. The company positions its portfolio at the prestige tier and distributes through both major beauty and luxury retailers and custom direct-to-consumer platforms.

Products and innovation

Parlux's catalogue is organised around licensed lines rather than a single house scent. Its current portfolio includes Eilish Fragrances, Paris Hilton Fragrances, Better World Fragrance House by Drake, The Shop Men's Grooming, and designer licenses such as Vince Camuto, Kenneth Cole, Sam Edelman, Steve Madden and Jessica Simpson.

Its recent commercial performance has centred on two names. WWD reported that Eilish was the number-one fragrance SKU at Ulta in 2025, with the line growing 30 percent, and that Drake's Summer Mink was the largest Ulta fragrance launch that year [9]. A further Eilish release, "Your Turn II," was announced for November 2025.

Sustainability

Parlux operates from a roughly 600,000-square-foot headquarters in Bellport, on Long Island, New York, which handles logistics, packaging, fulfilment and administration. The company says the site runs on one of the largest solar power installations in New York State and describes its operations as built on "sustainability and innovation." No dedicated sustainability programme beyond this is documented on its site.

Controversies

Parlux's corporate history has included leadership disputes. Ilia Lekach, who served as chairman and chief executive, resigned in 2006 following a lawsuit settlement, receiving $2.4 million [7]. The Florida Trend profile notes the company's history also included shareholder disputes, though the sources here do not detail them beyond the Lekach settlement.

Current status

Parlux is active. It reported estimated 2025 net sales of about $345 million, holds current best-selling lines at major US retailers, and announced new launches into late 2025 [9]. Sources differ on the company's headquarters depending on the era: the historical Parlux Fragrances, Inc. was based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida [7], while the modern Parlux Ltd. gives its operational headquarters as Bellport, New York, with additional offices in New York City and Florida.
