Summary

Overview

Baktolan is a German range of skin-protection and skin-care products for hands that work hard: hands that are washed many times a day, handle water-based solutions or spend long hours inside gloves. The name goes back to the 1930s at Bacillolfabrik Dr. BODE & Co., a Hamburg disinfectant maker later known as BODE Chemie, where Baktol and Baktolan sold well to hospitals [9]. Today the line belongs to PAUL HARTMANN AG, the German medical and care-products group that took over BODE Chemie in 2009 [9].

Baktolan is not a cosmetics brand in the usual retail sense. HARTMANN presents it as one part of a hand-hygiene system, alongside hand washing, hand disinfection and medical gloves, aimed at hospitals, emergency services, industry and food processing. The range is active, and its balms, lotions and a skin gel remain part of HARTMANN's current product catalogue.

Origin & founders

The company behind the Baktolan name was founded in 1924, when the pharmacist Dr. Kurt Bode set up Bacillolfabrik Dr. BODE & Co. [9]. In 1929 it moved to Hamburg-Stellingen, the district where it is still based. Its first product was Bacillol, a carbolic soap preparation, and the business grew around disinfection and hygiene.

During the 1930s the product range widened, and the company's own history records that Baktol and Baktolan "achieved successful sales in the hospital sector" [9]. That account does not say what the original Baktolan product was, nor does it describe today's skin-care line as a direct continuation of it. Because of this, no launch year for the Baktolan range as it exists now is documented, and Dr. Bode is known as the founder of the company rather than as the creator of the brand.

History & milestones

The early Baktolan name sat within a company whose identity was built on disinfection. After the Second World War, production resumed in 1947 in rebuilt facilities. In 1965 BODE introduced Sterillium, an alcohol-based hand disinfectant that the company says became "the synonym for hand disinfection." It is the disinfectant with which Baktolan is now paired in HARTMANN's hand-care routine.

In 1980 Beiersdorf AG bought 75 percent of the company's shares, and the business was renamed BODE Chemie [9]. Over the following decades BODE continued to develop disinfectants. It launched an alcohol-based hand rub with virus-killing action, Sterillium Virugard, in 1995, and in 2003 introduced Sterillium classic pure, one of the first hand disinfectants made without colourants or fragrance. According to the company, BODE was by then the market leader for disinfectants in Germany.

The next change of ownership came at the end of the decade, when BODE Chemie passed to PAUL HARTMANN AG (see Ownership). Under HARTMANN, a research unit called the BODE SCIENCE CENTER was set up in 2012; it was renamed the HARTMANN SCIENCE CENTRE in 2021. BODE Chemie marked its 100th anniversary in 2024. No separate anniversary has been documented for the Baktolan name itself.

Ownership

Baktolan is owned by PAUL HARTMANN AG through its subsidiary BODE Chemie. BODE's own company history states that it became a wholly-owned HARTMANN subsidiary in 2009 [9]. English Wikipedia lists the deal a year earlier, describing Bode Chemie as "acquired 2008" and as a Hamburg-based provider of disinfection, hygiene and skin-protection products [10]. The two accounts have not been reconciled; a one-year gap of this kind can reflect the difference between when a deal is agreed and when it closes. This article follows the company's own date of 2009.

HARTMANN is headquartered in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Germany, and traces its roots to 1818. Its business is organised around wound care, incontinence management and infection management, the last of which covers disinfection and hygiene. Wikipedia reports 2025 revenue of €2.45 billion and about 10,066 employees, with operations in 37 countries and sales in more than 130 [10].

Within the group, Baktolan sits beside BODE's disinfectant brands Sterillium and Bacillol and the wash lotion Baktolin, which is a separate product line. The wider HARTMANN group also owns the body-care and herbal-remedy company Kneipp, which became a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2008.

While BODE Chemie remains based in Hamburg, current Baktolan product pages name PAUL HARTMANN AG, in Heidenheim, as the company behind the range.

Philosophy & positioning

HARTMANN describes Baktolan as a series of skin-protection and care lotions that "protect and care for the skin reliably and over a long period." The idea behind the range is practical rather than cosmetic. In its material on healthy hands in the operating room, the company argues that only intact skin can be safely disinfected, and that hands should be protected and cared for systematically to keep skin healthy and lower the risk of infection [7].

That reasoning places Baktolan inside a four-step routine: washing with a mild cleanser such as Baktolin, disinfecting with Sterillium, wearing surgical gloves, and then protecting or caring for the skin with Baktolan. HARTMANN says the products in this system were tested for tolerance both one by one and in combination. It also states that, for example, applying cream does not weaken the effect of hand disinfection, citing an expert test report on Sterillium used together with Baktolan protect + pure [7].

The intended users are mainly professionals. HARTMANN recommends the protective lotion for preventive skin protection in healthcare, industry and food processing, and the range appears on its pages for operating theatres, emergency medical services and workplaces.

Products & innovation

The current range is small and built around a few textures, each matched to a particular skin condition.

Baktolan balm is a rich water-in-oil balm for dry and sensitive skin, meant for daily use and for skin under strain from frequent hand washing, contact with water-based solutions or long periods in gloves. Its care ingredients are allantoin, vitamin E and panthenol. According to HARTMANN, the balm soothes skin irritation and redness and helps stabilise the skin's natural acid layer [4]. Baktolan balm pure is the same balm made without fragrance.

Baktolan protect + pure is the protective product in the line. HARTMANN describes it as a modern water-in-oil-in-water lotion, a layered emulsion meant to absorb quickly while shielding skin from water-soluble irritants for a long time. The company says it supports skin repair, strengthens the skin barrier, and can be used under gloves to counter the irritation that builds up when skin is sealed in. It contains vitamin E and jojoba oil. HARTMANN also states that it has been assessed under HACCP, the food-safety system used in food production, as not affecting whether food remains fit to eat [5].

Baktolan lotion pure is a lighter, fast-absorbing oil-in-water lotion without fragrance, intended for normal skin.

Baktolan vital stands slightly apart from the hand-care products. It is a cooling, refreshing hydro-gel containing rosemary, arnica, eucalyptus and menthol. HARTMANN says it stimulates blood flow to the skin and helps keep skin elastic, and links this to helping prevent pressure sores in people who lie or sit for long periods [6].

The balm is described as paraben-free, and protect + pure as free from fragrance, colourants, silicones and parabens. Only the "pure" versions are fragrance-free; the standard balm is the scented version. No third-party certifications for the range are documented.

Current status

Baktolan is active. Baktolan balm, balm pure, protect + pure and vital were all listed with article numbers in HARTMANN's German product catalogue as of October 2026 [3]. No recent dated launches or announcements about the range are documented, and it continues as a product line within a larger medical group rather than as an independent company. Baktolan has no Wikipedia article of its own, and no coverage of the range in beauty-editorial media is documented.
