Overview
BeauTerra is a French dermo-cosmetic brand specialising in everyday personal-hygiene products — soaps, shower gels, shampoos and baby care — designed for sale through pharmacies. It was founded in 2016 in Charbonnières-les-Bains, near Lyon, by a father-and-son team [2], and since June 2021 has been owned by the French pharmaceutical group Mayoly (Laboratoires Mayoly Spindler). The brand presents itself as a maker of simple, naturally derived family products, made in France and sold at accessible prices.
The company is now operationally part of Mayoly's dermo-cosmetics division. It remains commercially active — its website carried 2025 copyright and continued to feature new launches such as shower oils and a lip balm — but its documented presence is essentially confined to France, where its products are distributed through pharmacies.
Origin and founders
According to BeauTerra's own account, the laboratory was created in 2016 in Charbonnières-les-Bains by a father-son duo: the father brought a background in dermo-cosmetics, while the son supplied the entrepreneurial drive [2]. The founding premise, as the company describes it, was that pharmacies lacked an offer of "pleasure" hygiene products that were simple, of natural origin and affordable. Mayoly's later acquisition announcement names Hugo Le Morvan as the founding director [9].
The pair began by reviving what the brand calls an "authentic and emblematic French product": Marseille soap. From that starting point they built a range organised around what BeauTerra summarises as simplicity, naturalness and effectiveness for the daily needs of whole families.
The brand's stated founding year is not entirely settled across sources. BeauTerra's "Notre Histoire" page gives 2016 [2], while Mayoly's 2021 acquisition release describes the company as established roughly four years before June 2021, implying around 2017 [9]. The brand's own first-party statement is the more specific of the two.
Products and positioning
BeauTerra's catalogue centres on body and hair hygiene. Its signature item is the Savon de Marseille, offered in solid and liquid forms and, per the company, produced under a master soapmaker using traditional saponification, on a base of 72% vegetable oils enriched with shea butter. The range also includes a Savon d'Alep (Aleppo soap), superfatted shower gels, shower oils, liquid and solid shampoos, an intimate-care line and a baby range. The Aleppo soap is the brand's one stated exception to its made-in-France rule: it is produced in Syria, in its region of origin, to preserve the traditional method.
Recurring ingredients across the range include vegetable oils, shea butter, olive oil, and hemp and aloe vera extracts in the certified-organic body line. The brand positions itself at an accessible, drugstore price point; Mayoly states the line is distributed to 3,800 French pharmacies.
How that distribution is framed differs between two Mayoly sources. The acquisition release describes BeauTerra as sold through pharmacies [9], whereas Mayoly's corporate "who we are" page characterises it as a brand "with an essentially online sales model" [10]. The pharmacy framing aligns with the brand's own focus on physical points of sale and with third-party pharmacy-retailer listings; the "online" description likely reflects its direct e-commerce share.
Philosophy
BeauTerra frames its approach around the idea that, in its words, "consuming less but better can be a source of happiness." Its stated mission is to provide everyday essentials for the skin of the whole family, and it summarises its values as made in France, naturalness and eco-responsibility, accessible pricing, and sensoriality — the last referring to the fragrances and textures of its products. The brand's tagline is "le bonheur des gestes simples" (the happiness of simple gestures).
Sustainability
A central plank of the brand's environmental positioning is refilling. BeauTerra says it was among the first brands to offer in-pharmacy refillable hygiene products, launching bulk refill stations in January 2021 through partner pharmacies [3]. According to the company, the eco-refill format uses 61 to 80% less plastic than the original bottle, the refill-station furniture is made from French PEFC-certified wood, and packaging for the wider range uses recyclable, FSC-certified cardboard.
The company states that all BeauTerra products and their ingredients are certified vegan [1]. The brand's cruelty-free status is recorded by PETA, whose database lists Laboratoire Beauterra as cruelty-free, noting that neither ingredients nor finished products are tested on animals [11]. Part of the range — including the baby line — is certified organic by Cosmécert under the COSMOS standard.
Ownership
BeauTerra was acquired by the Mayoly group in June 2021 [9]. Mayoly is a family-owned, independent French pharmaceutical and dermatological laboratory tracing its origins to 1909, with a portfolio of consumer-health and dermo-cosmetic brands that includes Topicrem and Smecta [10]. In announcing the deal, Mayoly said it would strengthen BeauTerra's position in France, accelerate new product development, and identify international markets for expansion.
In its acquisition release, Mayoly reported that BeauTerra had seen a 250% increase in consumer sales and sold 2.2 million products in 2020, making it the third-largest contributor to growth in the French dermo-cosmetics market that year [9].
Recognition
In 2025 the French consumer association UFC-Que Choisir assessed BeauTerra's Savon de Marseille Corps & Mains in its comparator of undesirable ingredients, rating the product "risque limité" (limited risk) across all population groups, including infants, pregnant women, children and adults [12]. The assessment noted that the allergens it identified came chiefly from the product's fragrance.
Current status
BeauTerra is an active brand operating as part of the Mayoly group following its 2021 acquisition. Its documented commercial footprint is single-country: distribution is concentrated in French pharmacies, and while Mayoly stated an intent to pursue selected international markets, no presence outside France is documented in the available sources. The brand continued to introduce new products through 2025.
