Overview
Topicrem is a French dermocosmetic skincare brand based in Paris and manufactured in France. It describes itself as a Paris dermatological laboratory operating since 1993 [1], created to care for sensitive, dry and reactive skin across the whole family. The brand belongs to Mayoly, a family-run French pharmaceutical group formerly known as Mayoly Spindler.
The company traces its origin to a personal story: in 1993, Jean-Gilles Vernin, who led the Mayoly Spindler pharmaceutical laboratory, asked his research team to develop a non-sticky formula to soothe his young son's eczema-related itching and redness [2]. That work produced the Ultra-Moisturizing Body Milk, the product that launched the brand and remains its signature item.
Origin and founders
Vernin, a pharmacist, is credited as the driving figure behind Topicrem. According to a trade-press history in Le Quotidien du Pharmacien, he took over Laboratoire Mayoly Spindler in 1982, and the youngest of his two sons, named Olivier, had struggled with eczema that had gone unrelieved — the motivation for developing the first formula.
Sources differ slightly on the founding date. The brand's own site consistently states "Paris dermatological laboratory since 1993" and dates its founding story to that year [1]. Its parent company, Mayoly, records the brand as "created by Jean-Gilles Vernin in 1994" [8]. The most likely reconciliation is that 1993 marks the development of the first formula and 1994 the commercial launch; the brand-site date is used here, with 1994 noted as the parent company's figure.
Ownership
Topicrem belongs to Mayoly, described as a family-run group handed down across generations for over a century. Mayoly was founded in 1909 as a French pharmaceutical laboratory specializing in plant-extract medicines [2]. The parent company has since rebranded from "Mayoly Spindler" to "Mayoly." Topicrem operates as its dermocosmetics brand and remains developed and manufactured in France.
Philosophy and positioning
Topicrem positions itself as a dermocosmetic brand "for the whole family," dedicated to sensitive skin of all ages. The company states its mission as bringing "a smile back to all skin types, even the most sensitive," combining dermatological efficacy with a focus on well-being and comfortable, non-sticky application. It publicly frames itself around five core values: a family brand; an effective and high-tolerance brand; a generous and inclusive brand; an authentic brand; and a simple and positive brand.
The brand follows what it calls a "reasoned formulation charter" that prioritizes ingredients of natural origin where possible; according to the company, its formulas contain on average 88% ingredients of natural origin, excluding sun-filter products as of January 2024. Its products are sold chiefly through pharmacies, and the company describes the Ultra-Moisturizing Body Milk as the top-selling moisturizing body lotion in French pharmacies [1]. Topicrem states it is present in nearly 80 countries across more than 30,000 distribution points [2]; the Mayoly parent page cites an older figure of over 40 countries [8], a difference the packet attributes to growth over time rather than a genuine contradiction.
Unusually for a beauty brand, Topicrem's ambassador program, called TopiFamily, foregrounds ordinary consumers and its own laboratory staff rather than celebrities or influencers, with the company stating its campaigns "put forward our laboratory staff and consumers."
Products and innovation
The range spans body care, face care, hair care, baby care and sun protection, organized into lines addressing specific skin concerns — among them Ultra-Moisturizing, Hydra+, MELA for hyperpigmentation, AC Control for acne, CICA+ for irritation, DA Protect for atopic skin, and Calm+ for reactive skin. Recurring hero ingredients include glycerin, urea, shea butter, zinc gluconate, linseed oil, and a bioactive water combining betaine, inositol and taurine.
Topicrem's principal proprietary technology is its MELA Complex, combining niacinamide and an algae extract, which the company holds under patent number 2206538 [7]. Used in the MELA range for hyperpigmentation, the complex is described as limiting melanin production and slowing the transfer of melanosomes to keratinocytes across both face and body products.
The company emphasizes clinical validation of its formulas, stating that products are tested under medical supervision on sensitive skin, that formulas were tested on more than 3,000 sensitive skins, and that all formulas guarantee at least 24 hours of hydration. In December 2025, the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology published clinical evidence on the effectiveness of the brand's DA Protect line for patients with atopic dermatitis [5].
Sustainability
Topicrem donates 1% of its product sales to the marine-cleanup organization Project Rescue Ocean through the 1% for the Planet initiative [4]. Its SUN PROTECT range uses organic sunscreens that exclude mineral and nano filters and undergoes ecotoxicity testing on marine organisms. The brand has also worked to reduce packaging, reporting tubes made with at least 28% recycled plastic and spray bottles with at least 29%. On the social side, the company says it has partnered with the French association Vivre Comme Avant, which supports women affected by breast cancer, since 2018.
Recognition and press
Topicrem products have been featured across French consumer and trade media, including Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Version Femina, Femme Actuelle and pharmacy-trade titles such as Le Quotidien du Pharmacien, with coverage spanning 2023 through early 2026. Reviews in Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan noted high scores on the ingredient-rating app Yuka for some products. The brand's press page lists media features rather than named competitive beauty awards.
Current status
Topicrem is active. It is owned by the operating pharmaceutical group Mayoly, sold internationally through pharmacy channels, and has drawn continuous press coverage through early 2026, alongside the December 2025 clinical publication on its DA Protect line [5]. Its distribution remains centered on European, and especially French, pharmacies.
