Summary

Overview

BIOBAZA is a Croatian natural-cosmetics brand launched in 2011 as the flagship line of Magdis d.o.o., a pharmaceutical and cosmetics manufacturer based in Sveta Nedelja, near Zagreb [11]. The brand applies pharmaceutical-grade production standards to skincare, body and hair products formulated for sensitive skin, and prints the exact percentage of natural-origin ingredients on each item. It remains active in 2026, distributed across Croatia and the wider Adriatic region and, more recently, in the Nordic market through the web-shop nesesser.com.

The brand sits within the early-2010s wave of Balkan natural-beauty labels that built their markets first at home and then across the Adriatic. It has attracted little international beauty press; most of the documented record comes from Croatian business and trade media covering its parent company, Magdis.

Origin & founders

BIOBAZA was created by Srećko Gross, a Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences and former production director at Pliva, Croatia's largest pharmaceutical company. Gross had earlier founded Magdis d.o.o. in Zagreb around 1993, initially running it as a contract manufacturer of dietary supplements and cosmetics [10]. The BIOBAZA brand-line followed in 2011, conceived as a natural-cosmetics range that carried over pharmaceutical production methods from the parent company's contract-manufacturing work.

Sources differ on the founding date. Croatian business magazine Lider dates the line to 1993, the same year as Magdis itself [10]. Telegram.hr states explicitly that BIOBAZA "was launched in 2011" [11], and the Croatian Exporters Association described the brand in 2017 as being in its sixth year on the market, which points to a 2011 start [13]. The 1993 figure appears to conflate the founding of the parent company with the later launch of the brand; 2011 is treated here as the BIOBAZA launch year and 1993 as the founding of Magdis.

Leadership later passed to the founder's son, Marko Gross, who has served as chief executive of Magdis and is the public voice of the company in trade interviews.

History & milestones

After launching domestically, BIOBAZA began exporting in 2015, first to Hungary and then to Slovenia and Serbia [13]. The range grew from three products at the outset to around one hundred by 2017, and to more than 150 formulations by the mid-2020s. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania were added as the regional footprint widened, and the company has named Western Europe and Scandinavia as further export targets. By the founder's account the brand was built deliberately for the domestic market before expansion, with a stated preference for direct distribution over intermediaries while manufacturing capacity grew.

A pivotal moment came in October 2018, when Magdis acquired Neva d.o.o. from Atlantic Grupa [10]. Neva, founded in 1918, was the oldest Croatian cosmetics manufacturer and had previously been owned by Pliva and then Atlantic Grupa. The deal brought Magdis the Rakitje production plant, 52 employees and a portfolio of long-established Croatian brands including Plidenta, Melem and Rosal, and made Magdis the largest cosmetics manufacturer in Croatia [11]. In a trade interview, Marko Gross described BIOBAZA as accounting for roughly 60 percent of Magdis revenues at the time, and projected group revenue rising past 100 million kuna following the Neva consolidation [12].

Ownership

BIOBAZA is owned by Magdis d.o.o. In a transaction completed around 2024, the law firm WAHL advised Magdis on the sale of company shares to H2 Special Purpose Vehicle d.o.o., placing the group under a new ownership structure [14]. BIOBAZA continued as the group's flagship brand through the change.

One source, the portfolio site mativagroup.com, presents BIOBAZA among its listed brands and could be read as implying Mativa Group ownership [4]. Croatian editorial coverage consistently identifies Magdis as the brand's parent, however, and the WAHL announcement confirms the chain from BIOBAZA to Magdis to H2 Special Purpose Vehicle [14]. Magdis is therefore treated as the corporate parent.

Alongside BIOBAZA, the Magdis group manages the brands acquired with Neva, among them Plidenta, Melem and Rosal, as well as the Neva 1918 heritage name.

Philosophy & positioning

The brand positions itself as pharmaceutical-grade natural cosmetics for sensitive skin. According to the company, BIOBAZA products are formulated without preservatives, irritants, synthetic fragrances or colourants, and place emphasis on a high proportion of ingredients of natural origin, with the exact percentage marked on each product. The company describes the line as developed and produced "by Croatian experts for pharmaceutical production."

This framing is reinforced by the founder's pharmaceutical background and by the parent company's manufacturing standards rather than by generic clean-beauty language. Magdis states that production follows the ISO 9001:2015 quality-management system and the ISO 13485:2012 standard for medical products, together with HACCP principles, and that each batch is laboratory-tested before reaching the market [20]. The use of a medical-device quality system is unusual for a cosmetics brand and reflects the company's pharmaceutical heritage. The brand's stated mission centres on care for nature combined with pharmaceutical-grade quality; the Croatian-market positioning emphasises "love for nature," while the Nordic web-shop uses the tagline "Beauty captured in a bag."

The audience is broadly a family one. Marko Gross has described BIOBAZA as natural cosmetics for families, spanning face, body, hair and baby care.

Products & innovation

BIOBAZA's range covers skincare, body care, hair care, lip care and sun care across more than 150 formulations. The products draw on natural butters, vegetable oils and essential oils — recurring ingredients include argan, almond, shea, jojoba, borage and evening primrose oils, alongside rosemary and lavender essential oils.

The SUN line is among the brand's best-known and a key export range. Its Royal Mist is described by retailers as a supertanning body-and-hair mist that promotes tanning while moisturising the skin and hair, and the Bee Balm Sun & Sea lip balm offers SPF 15 protection with carrot, hazelnut and vitamin E oils. The line also includes a mineral sunscreen lotion at SPF 30, sold in markets such as Poland. An Argan family of shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and soap forms another consistent group within the catalogue.

In the skincare segment, the Lift-it! anti-oxidant fluid and Lift-it-up! oil serum were reviewed as early as 2016 and reported to contain 98–99 percent natural-origin ingredients [18]. In place of conventional preservatives, the company says it uses what it calls natural-identical multifunctional ingredients, and that surfactants and emulsifiers are derived from natural sources.

Ethics & sustainability

According to the brand, BIOBAZA products are not tested on animals and do not contain ingredients tested on animals, nor any genetically modified organisms. The company states that its formulas are free from parabens, paraffins, synthetic preservatives, artificial colours and synthetic fragrances; natural essential oils such as lavender and rosemary are still used for scent.

A distinct sustainability initiative came through a partnership with Adriatic Luxury Hotels, a Croatian luxury hospitality group. The two co-developed a citrus-and-almond amenity line for hotel use, described as built on circular production with fully recyclable, eco-friendly packaging, and available exclusively in selected ALH properties [15]. Manufacturing takes place in Croatia, at the company's Sveta Nedelja base and at the former Neva plant in Rakitje.
