Summary

Overview

Bolzano is an Italian maker of double-edge razor blades for safety razors, known in Italy since 1920 [9]. Sold under names including Lama Bolzano and Bolzano Superinox Inossidabile, it built a long-standing reputation among barbers and home wet-shavers, and its packaging is described as a common sight in Italian barbershops. Today the name survives as a heritage sub-brand rather than an independent company: production passed to German ownership in the 1990s, and the brand has no website, social media or marketing presence of its own. On that basis it is best described as dormant — the blades are still distributed, but no active brand-building is visible.

The blades reach buyers chiefly through wet-shaving specialty retailers across Europe and the United States, including Finnish shops, though they are frequently reported as scarce or out of stock.

Origin and history

Bolzano traces its history to Italy in 1920, where it was established to manufacture stainless-steel blades for safety razors [9]. One retailer describes "the amazing Bolzano Blade (or Lama Bolzano in Italian)" as Italy's best-selling double-edge blade "for almost a century" [5]. The brand's reputation rested on pairing reliable quality with an affordable price, which carried its name beyond Italy.

In the early 1990s the Italian manufacturing facility was bought by the German company Feintechnik GmbH, based in Eisfeld, Thuringia, and the production equipment was moved to the former East German plant [4]. Wet-shaving community accounts note that the line was then made in Germany "using a plant specifically built under Italian directives" [4].

Ownership changed again in 2014, when Feintechnik was acquired by the American shaving company Harry's, Inc. [2] The Eisfeld site, which Harry's operates as a razor-blade factory, dates its precision-blade production to 1920 and employs roughly 450 people. According to community sources, Bolzano blades are produced "by the same people who make Elios and Croma," alongside Harry's own cartridges [4].

Ownership

Bolzano is a sub-brand within Feintechnik GmbH of Eisfeld, which has been part of Harry's, Inc. since the 2014 acquisition [2]. It has no separate corporate identity: the Harry's Factory (Feintechnik) website markets only Harry's-branded razors and makes no mention of Bolzano, consistent with the line being a heritage product carried without dedicated promotion.

Products and manufacturing

The signature product is the Bolzano Superinox Inossidabile double-edge blade — "Superinox Inossidabile" meaning, roughly, "super stainless." Community sources describe the current blade as stainless steel finished with an improved titanium plating process, intended to give a smoother, longer-lasting edge [4]. One retailer states each blade keeps its sharpness for seven to ten uses depending on the hair being shaved [9]; another quotes a shorter span of three to six shaves, indicating that real-world blade life varies. The blades are sold in packs of five.

Where the blades are made is disputed in current listings. Several retailers and wet-shaving community accounts report that, since around 2020, production shifted from Germany to a Lord facility in Egypt [4]. Other sellers continue to describe the blades as German-made: the Finnish retailer Nordic Shaving lists them as a product of Feintechnik GmbH in Germany [11]. Both claims appear in present-day retail listings, which may reflect an incomplete supply-chain transition or older German-made stock still being sold; the widespread backorder status reported across retailers is consistent with a production change.

Reception

Within the traditional wet-shaving community, the Bolzano Superinox has a cult following. Community sources describe it as "loved by Master Italian Barbers and experienced wet-shavers" and "considered one of the finest in the world," praised for sharpness and longevity [4]. Its scarcity — said to be limited even in Italy [4] — has added to that reputation. The brand is associated with the broader revival of double-edge razor shaving and with Italian barbering heritage.

Current status

Bolzano is classified as dormant. The product is still manufactured and distributed internationally through wet-shaving retailers, but the brand has no dedicated website, social media accounts, press kit or recent product launches, and exists only as a sub-brand under Feintechnik (Harry's). Availability has been unreliable: retailers in several markets, including m room shop and Vintage Shave in Finland and The Personal Barber in the United Kingdom, have listed the blades as backordered or sold out, a pattern community sources link to the reported 2020 move of production to Egypt [4]. It is not defunct — the blades continue to be made and sold — but the name is no longer actively built as a brand.
