Summary

Overview

Bu Feng is a niche fragrance house whose perfumes retell stories from Chinese history and folklore. The name, the brand says, means "Catching the Wind", and wind serves as the organising image for everything it makes, from the scents themselves to the shape of its bottles and boxes. Its founder and perfumer is Xiao Lan, and the house sells two collections: Stance, a set of extraits de parfum built around historical figures, and View, a set of eaux de parfum built around places known only from legend.

The house is young. Its first fragrances appeared in 2024, according to the fragrance databases Parfumo and Scentverdict [12][13], and the brand itself gives no founding date. Outside sources disagree slightly on where it comes from: the retailer Parfinity presents it as a fragrance house from Hong Kong, while Scentverdict places it within the Chinese perfume market [11][12]. Bu Feng's own website names no country.

Origin & founders

Bu Feng describes itself as "an artistic perfumery house born from a desire to capture the inner strength of wind" and to turn that energy into a way of living. The idea draws on East Asian philosophy, in which movement is seen as a natural state rather than a disturbance. In the company's telling, wind stands for an inner vitality that is free and always changing yet keeps its essence.

The central figure is Xiao Lan, whom the brand introduces as its founder, perfumer and storyteller. According to the founder page on the brand's website, she was educated in France and the United States and also practises traditional Chinese incense making. The same page calls her an award-winning perfumer and states that she was named Perfumer of the Year by CFA Grasse in 2023 [4]. That award is a personal one, stated by the brand, and it has not been independently confirmed. To Lan, the founder page says, a fragrance is "not a decoration, but an art with its own story, spirit, and soul."

Outside the brand's own pages, Parfumo credits Xiao Lan as the perfumer of Holding the Sword, and Parfinity lists her as founder and perfumer, drawing on her official biography to explain why the house treats scent as storytelling rather than ornament.

History & milestones

The brand's documented history is short. Holding the Sword, the first scent in the Stance collection, is listed by Parfumo with a release year of 2024. By 2026 the house had eight fragrances on sale, split evenly between its two collections.

On 31 May 2026 Bu Feng opened a blog on its website with three articles, one introducing its founder, one setting out its mission and one describing its approach to raw materials. All three were last revised on 10 June 2026, according to the site's own feed.

Ownership

Bu Feng is linked to a company called Wonder Senses Limited. Parfinity names Wonder Senses Limited as the brand's legal name in its structured shop data, and Parfumo states that Holding the Sword is marketed by Wonder Senses [11][13]. The brand's own website does not mention the company.

A company profile published on the career-service site of the Politecnico di Milano describes Wonder Senses as a cosmetics business established by a team of olfactory artists. According to that profile, the group dates back to 2020 and is based in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China, with the aim of creating artisan scents for audiences from different cultures [14]. Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, so the two country attributions found elsewhere may describe the same fact at different levels of detail. No acquisitions or changes of ownership have been reported.

Philosophy & positioning

Bu Feng states its mission as capturing "the flow of life through scent, transforming stories, landscapes, and emotions into lasting olfactory experiences". On its "Our Story" page the company sums up its creative approach in three lines: a devotion to what it calls "timeless Asian quiet luxury", an unbound and niche approach to making fragrance, and a refined pursuit of craftsmanship and materials. Its tagline is "Capturing Winds from the Wild World", and the website footer carries a shorter motto, "Freedom is the ultimate rule."

Packaging is part of the story. The outer box is octagonal, a shape common in Chinese design, which the brand says represents wind and good fortune arriving from every direction of the compass. The bottle is presented as a modern take on the gourd, a traditional vessel, which the company describes as holding "stories, spirits, and the ever flowing wind." Parfinity singles out the gourd-like bottles and octagonal boxes as a defining feature of the house's visual language.

Scentverdict describes the brand as part of the ultra-niche segment of the Chinese perfume market. Bu Feng sells directly through its own online shop, which ships worldwide, and through independent perfumeries and concept stores. Its stockist page lists partner shops in several European countries and in the United States.

Products & innovation

The Stance collection consists of four extraits de parfum, each inspired by a remarkable figure from Chinese history or folklore. Holding the Sword portrays Cao Cao (155–220), whom the brand calls one of the great heroes, or villains, of Chinese history. Drunken Jade depicts the musician Ji Kang (223–263), whom the company describes, with a modern comparison, as the rock star of his era for his charm and untamed spirit. Elegant Jade is built around Wang Yan (256–311), an aristocrat whose calm, in the brand's account, held firm amid the chaos around him. Flare in Amber tells the story of Wang Rong (234–305), described as a steady general, a quick wit and a tender husband.

The View collection moves from people to places. Each of its four eaux de parfum is inspired by a location known only through folklore, places whose geography is undefined but which are remembered for the open, easy way life unfolded there. Peach Blossom Spring evokes a hidden valley of peach trees cut off from the outside world. White Deer in Snowlight imagines a white deer appearing through frost in the snow-covered Kunlun Mountains, using eucalyptus and airy notes to suggest snow and silence. Mountains beyond Clouds pictures a peak floating above a sea of mist, while Desert's Verge draws on a myth of running sands and sets dry myrrh and cypriol against bergamot and patchouli.

Holding the Sword is the best documented of the scents outside the brand's own pages. Parfumo lists it as a woody-spicy fragrance for women and men, with saffron at the top, a metallic accord and red rose at the heart, and cedarwood at the base [13]. Reviewers there and on Parfinity tend to single out its cool, metallic rose, though opinions on it are mixed.

On raw materials, the company says China's varied climates, from mountains to fields, produce plants with distinct character, and that it uses these natural materials in high concentrations. It currently highlights three: Crimson Glory rose from Yunnan, described as dark and velvety with jammy, wine-like notes; Jasmine Sambac from Guangxi, with fresh green and tea-like facets; and thyme from Gansu, which the brand presents as a dry, windswept accord that recalls high-plateau air.

No third-party certifications, patents or sustainability commitments are documented for the brand.

Current status

Bu Feng is active. Its online shop is trading, its stockist list is current, and its website was updated in June 2026, when the three blog articles were last revised [3]. The house remains small, and independent coverage has so far been limited to retailer pages and fragrance databases rather than editorial press.
