Summary

Overview

Bullfrog is an Italian men's grooming brand and barbershop chain founded in Milan in 2013 by Romano Brida and his wife, Anna Maria Negri. It pairs a network of physical barbershops with a line of grooming products — beard care, hair styling, fragrance and men's skincare — built around the idea of the traditional barber's shop as a place to slow down. Since 2014 the company has been majority-owned by the Italian retail and franchising group Percassi [10]. The brand remains active, with regular editorial output and a presence spanning Italy and several European and Middle Eastern markets.

Origin and founders

Bullfrog grew out of a career change. Before founding the company, Brida spent more than a decade in management consulting at firms including Deloitte and Value Partners, followed by years in information technology. According to the company, the brand "was born from an idea of Romano Brida" during a sabbatical taken after the 2008 financial crisis [2]. Travelling in New York around 2011, he observed the revival of upmarket barbershop culture there and set out to combine it with the Italian tradition of shaving [9]. The first salon opened in 2013 in Milan's Isola neighbourhood, alongside a barber academy.

Brida has explained the name as a play on two ideas: the metaphor of the boiling frog, about gradual adaptation to change, and the fairy-tale frog that transforms — "it's about someone ugly turning into someone hot," as he put it in one interview [9].

History and milestones

The early years combined retail growth with rapid product and geographic expansion. The flagship Agnostico product line launched in 2014, the same year the company joined Percassi and opened a second Milan salon. A third Milan location and an expansion to Zurich followed in 2015, together with a professional line aimed at other barbershops. In 2017 the company obtained ISO 9001:2015 quality certification and passed 150 distribution points [2]. A Milan flagship store opened in 2021, and franchising carried the barbershops into markets including Munich, Nice and Cyprus.

By its tenth anniversary in 2023, the company reported revenue of roughly €6 million and said it had completed around 300,000 haircuts since opening [10]. At that point it operated nine stores in Italy and five abroad — in Zurich, Munich, Nice, Cyprus and Muscat — and supplied about 500 retailers across Europe. External distribution and e-commerce had grown to represent some 70 percent of revenue, up from a business once weighted toward company-owned stores [10].

Ownership

Bullfrog has been controlled since 2014 by Percassi, an Italian group active in retail, franchising and brand development, which acquired a majority stake in the company [10]. Brida has remained chief executive and the public face of the brand.

Philosophy and positioning

The company frames Bullfrog as a meeting point between two grooming cultures. On its brand page it describes the aim as "an authentic, functional, fast and high quality service in an environment which represent the meeting point between the italian art of shaving and the atmosphere of the north-american raw barbershops." It promotes the idea of a "Bullfrog Effect," which it sums up as "making yourself feel at home" in a barbershop setting.

Brida has tied this to a particular view of luxury. In an interview he described modern luxury as "having time for ourselves," pointing to a deliberately unhurried service — including a 45-minute shave — that prioritises the client's experience over speed [9]. The brand's stated clientele is broad, ranging, in his words, from "rockabillies" and hipsters to suited professionals.

Products and innovation

The Agnostico range is the brand's flagship line, spanning aftershave, all-in-one balms and fragrances. Bullfrog markets its Agnostico All-in-One Balm as "Bullfrog's most iconic product" [6]. Other notable lines include the Secret Potion beard oils, described by the company as an "irreplaceable secret formula by Bullfrog barbers," and Oltresiero, a men's face serum the brand positions as "more than just a serum." For Oltresiero, the company lists hyaluronic acid for hydration, marine algae extract for firmer skin, and a mineralising complex intended to stimulate the skin [7].

Across its formulas, the company emphasises three principles it prints on its homepage: "Made in Italy, Rich in Natural Ingredients, and Low Waste Packaging." Products are sold both through Bullfrog's own barbershops and through external retailers and e-commerce.

Sustainability

Through what it calls its "Green Choices" guidelines, Bullfrog states that it prioritises glass and aluminium packaging "as they are infinitely recyclable materials," and uses fully recycled plastic where plastic is necessary. The company says its formulations include "up to 100% naturally derived ingredients" and that it works to reduce manufacturing steps for energy savings and to select suppliers with lower environmental impact. It describes these guidelines as an integral part of how its development team creates new products.

Recognition and press

As a primarily Italian and European brand, Bullfrog's documented press coverage centres on its home market. The Italian national outlet Quotidiano published a ten-year retrospective in 2023 tracing the company's growth from a single Milan barbershop to an international grooming brand [10]. The publication The Italian Rêve ran an interview with Brida in 2024 about the brand and his idea of modern luxury [9].

Current status

Bullfrog is active. Its Gazette blog continues to publish regularly, with the most recent posts observed dating to September 2025 [5]. The company operates barbershops across Italy and in several international markets and continues to launch and promote grooming products under the Percassi group.
