Overview
Bürstenmann is a German manufacturer of brushes, toothbrushes and household goods based in Stützengrün, a small town in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region of Saxony. The company traces its name to 1906 and dates its founding to 1925, when the wholesale society of the German consumer cooperatives opened a brush factory in the town [3]. It has stayed on the same site ever since and has been wholly owned by the cooperative group Zentralkonsum eG since 1990.
Although the company sells household brooms, cleaning brushes and painting supplies, its link to personal care runs through oral care: toothbrushes for adults and children, interdental products and, more recently, a toothbrush with a beech-wood handle. Much of its output is made as private label for retailers rather than sold under the Bürstenmann name. The company is active and marked its centenary in 2025.
Origin & founders
Brush-making in the area around Stützengrün grew out of hardship. The company's own history describes how local people had to find new work once ore mining stopped paying, and how that shift laid the foundation for the business. A 2023 regional news report puts the start of brush and paintbrush production in the Erzgebirge at around 1820, when former mining families turned to wood from local forests and to bristles collected as waste from butchers [13]. The same report counts roughly 20 brush-making companies still active in the border area between the Erzgebirge and Vogtland, producing everything from brooms to toothbrushes and shaving brushes.
Bürstenmann has no individual founder. The name first appears in 1906, attached to a department of the Schönheider Konsumverein, the consumer cooperative of Schönheide. In 1919 production was taken over by the Großeinkaufsgesellschaft Deutscher Consumvereine m.b.H. (GEG), the purchasing and wholesale company of the German consumer cooperatives. The GEG then founded the Bürstenmann works in Stützengrün in 1925. The company counts that year as its founding date, and its website pairs it with the line "Quality made in Germany."
The distinction matters for dating the brand. 1906 marks the first use of the Bürstenmann name; 1925 marks the factory that became today's company. A business magazine interview from 2021 tells the same sequence, from the cooperative department through the GEG takeover to the 1925 founding.
History & milestones
A 1929 silent film, Auf der Fahrt durchs Erzgebirge ("A journey through the Erzgebirge"), shows broom, brush and paintbrush production inside the Bürstenmann factory. The company presents the footage on its "Werkspiegel" page, which is headed "100 Jahre Bürstenmann" [6].
The factory's twentieth-century path followed the cooperative movement. From 1952 it belonged to the group of what is today Zentralkonsum eG. The company's timeline describes German reunification in 1989 as a successful transition from a planned to a market economy. In 1990 the works was converted into a GmbH, a German limited-liability company, and in 1997 it began trading as Bürstenmann GmbH.
Toothbrushes became a central part of the business in this period. In 1991 the company continued its toothbrush production through a joint venture with Denta Bross GmbH & Co. KG, another Stützengrün firm [3]. In the 2021 interview, the managing director said toothbrushes had been part of the range for about 40 years and by then made up the lion's share of the business.
A run of building projects followed. The company opened a new plastic injection-moulding plant and a logistics centre in 1999, a new production and warehouse hall in 2005, a new toothbrush production facility in 2011 and another hall in 2012 to streamline logistics, assembly and packing. According to the company, the two toothbrush halls of 2005 and 2011 together represented an investment of 4.3 million euros [3], which it credits with helping it win new customers.
The 2021 interview also described the pressures of the period. The managing director said the company's strength in grocery retail had been an advantage during the coronavirus lockdowns, when supermarkets stayed open. At the same time, rising raw-material prices, especially for wood, and sharply higher freight costs for goods from Asia and Eastern Europe were causing problems. He said the market was consolidating and that, although the company considered itself well placed, it was thinking about mergers or acquisitions to defend what he called its leading market position [12].
Ownership
Bürstenmann has been owned by cooperative organisations for almost its entire existence. It began as a department of a local consumer cooperative, passed to the GEG in 1919 and has belonged to the group of today's Zentralkonsum eG since 1952. Since 1990, Zentralkonsum eG has been its sole shareholder, holding 100 per cent of the company [3].
The 1991 toothbrush joint venture with Denta Bross GmbH & Co. KG is the only other corporate partnership the company names in its history. No sister brands within the Zentralkonsum group are described.
Leadership has changed in recent years. Ralf Bade was managing director at the time of the 2021 interview. The company's current imprint names Christian-Carl Fester as managing director and gives its address as Schönheider Straße 61 in Stützengrün [11].
Philosophy & positioning
Bürstenmann names four core values: customer orientation, quality awareness, innovation and sustainability [2]. Its philosophy page frames the mission in trade terms rather than consumer terms. "We are successful when you are," it tells retail partners, promising individual support, service and competitive products.
The company says it no longer sees itself as a simple brush and paintbrush maker. Instead, it describes a complete range of household goods and DIY supplies of around 1,600 articles, and says that smart products and strong in-store presentation have made it an established name in Europe. It also stresses renewal: according to its business-areas page, developing new products, introducing new ranges, updating packaging design and regularly refreshing the Bürstenmann brand are important to its future as a long-established firm.
In practice, much of this work happens behind retailers' own labels. Ralf Bade summed up the range in 2021 as "everything that has to do with wood and bristles," and said the products are private-label lines that have been known for a long time. The interview named grocery retail, drugstores, furniture stores and DIY chains among its customers, including Rewe, Real, Lidl, Penny and Kaufland [12]. That customer base places its products firmly in the mass market.
The company's reach extends beyond Germany. According to the same interview, toothbrushes are increasingly sold abroad. Bade described Qatar and Oman as long-standing export markets for historical reasons, alongside the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and "basically all of Europe," and said the company aimed to become more international.
Products & innovation
Bürstenmann organises its business into three fields: household goods, oral care and DIY supplies. The household range covers house and garden, fine cleaning, kitchen, bath and toilet, and household aids. Classic street brooms, hand brushes and toilet brushes dominate there, according to the 2021 interview, while the painting and decorating products in the DIY range are bought in from outside partners. The company also offers an HACCP range of brooms, floor wipers, squeegees and cleaning brushes designed for food-hygiene settings, and an interchangeable-head system for multi-purpose cleaning tools.
Oral care is the part of the business closest to personal care. The range includes toothbrushes for adults and children, interdental products and retail packaging. Under the Purodent name, the company sells a colourful toothbrush series for children and juniors and a range of interdental products.
Its most visible recent product is a beech-wood toothbrush, developed as an alternative to plastic toothbrushes. According to Bürstenmann, the handle is made from beech wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and sourced directly from forests in the Erzgebirge, close to its Stützengrün plant [9]. The bristles are based on castor oil, which is obtained from the seeds of the tropical castor-oil plant. The company describes all the materials as vegan and petroleum-free, and the toothbrush comes in a folding box of recyclable, plastic-free cardboard. Its homepage presents the brush as sustainable, vegan and biodegradable.
In the 2021 interview, Bade linked the wooden toothbrush to a wider shift among customers. Sustainability had become a major topic, he said; wooden brushes were playing a growing role, and the company had switched many of its packages. When one retailer's own brand moves to plastic-free packaging, he explained, others follow, which made investment in toothbrush packaging machines a logical step. The interview also noted a trend toward electric devices, both in toothbrushes and in household cleaning, where cleaning and vacuum robots were gaining ground.
On quality and energy management, the company lists certification to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 50001, along with the IFS HPC and BRC CP standards [7]. The FSC certification applies to the beech wood used in its toothbrushes. In its philosophy, the company says it uses resources responsibly and in an environmentally and socially compatible way across product development, purchasing, production and sales.
Recognition
No industry awards are documented for Bürstenmann. The company was the subject of a 2021 interview in the German business magazine Wirtschaftsforum, which described it as an example of the "Rund um den Kuhberg" area, known as a community of brush and paintbrush makers [12]. The interview gave the company's size at the time as about 120 employees and annual revenue of around 30 million euros.
The wider Stützengrün brush industry has also drawn attention. In a 2023 report on the dental news portal ZWP online, Saxony's regional development minister called the area's brush manufacturers "hidden champions," and Stützengrün's mayor said that almost every second toothbrush in Germany comes from the town [13]. The report does not name Bürstenmann individually.
Current status
Bürstenmann is active. Its website carries centenary material marking 100 years since the 1925 founding and describes a project, funded through the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE) and the state of Saxony, to replace the lighting at its Stützengrün site with energy-efficient LED lighting. The project's implementation period runs from 26 August 2025 to 31 March 2026 [10]. The company remains based at its original location in Stützengrün and is still wholly owned by Zentralkonsum eG.
