Bvlgari Le Gemme

Bvlgari Le Gemme is the high-perfumery fragrance collection of the Italian jewellery house Bvlgari, launched in 2014. It belongs to the wider Bulgari maison, founded in Rome in 1884 by the Greek-born silversmith Sotirio Bulgari [1]. The line translates the house's jewellery heritage into scent: each fragrance is built around a precious gemstone drawn from Bulgari's own history. Bvlgari has been part of the French luxury group LVMH since 2011 and continues to operate as an active maison, with Le Gemme still sold through the official Bvlgari store [5].

The parent house traces its beginnings to a silversmith's workshop in Rome. According to Bvlgari's own history, the company was founded in 1884 by Sotirio Bulgari, whose silver ornaments were prized by visiting English tourists before the business grew into a jewellery house known for vibrant colour, balanced volumes and motifs that nod to its Roman roots [1]. The founder's name is recorded in two forms: the house uses the Italianised "Sotirio Bulgari", while Wikipedia gives the original Greek transliteration "Sotirios Voulgaris" — two renderings of the same person, Σωτήριος Βούλγαρης [1][2]. The familiar BVLGARI spelling, in the classical Latin alphabet, derives from the founder's surname [2].

From its Roman base the house expanded over the following century. In 1905 it opened the Via Condotti shop that became its flagship, and in 1977 it entered watchmaking with the BVLGARI BVLGARI watch [2]. In 2001 it moved into hospitality through a joint venture with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company to launch Bulgari Hotels & Resorts [2].

The Le Gemme fragrance collection arrived later, launching on 10 December 2014 [4]. It was created by the perfumer Daniela Andrier of Givaudan and presented as six scents, each corresponding to a stone from Bulgari's own history — the amethyst, tourmaline, turquoise, peridot, citrine and moonstone [3]. The fragrances are housed in bottles shaped after Greek and Roman amphorae, an olfactory interpretation of each gemstone.

Bvlgari is owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. The two signed a strategic alliance in 2011 in an all-share deal valued at €4.3 billion, an acquisition that concluded on 4 October 2011 [2]. Within LVMH's fragrance and cosmetics portfolio, Bvlgari sits alongside houses such as Guerlain, Acqua di Parma, Dior and Givenchy.

The collection is framed as a meeting point between the house's two crafts. Bvlgari describes Le Gemme as marrying the worlds of jewellery and fragrance, drawing on the tradition of high jewellery and what it calls its values of excellence and uniqueness [4]. Each perfume is positioned as the scent equivalent of a precious stone, extending the maison's jewellery identity rather than standing apart from it.

The six fragrances draw on a broad palette of materials, among them lavender, iris, tuberose, centifolia rose, sandalwood, cardamom and patchouli. Ashlemah, tied to the amethyst, blends lavender, heliotrope, powdery iris and violet; Noorah, the turquoise, layers galbanum, cardamom, benzoin, tobacco, oak, patchouli and vanilla; Amarena, the tourmaline, is a fruity floral of tuberose, violet and centifolia rose; Calaluna, the moonstone, combines sandalwood, cardamom, heliotrope, ambrette and pear; and Maravilla, the citrine, sets citrus notes against patchouli, peach and jasmine.

The Perfume Society describes Le Gemme as a singular and very luxurious collection, attributing the cost partly to some of its components — including a vetiver acetate ingredient whose production had been due to stop because it was so expensive [3]. The same source frames the line as Bvlgari's entry into high perfumery.
