Overview
Charles Worthington is a British haircare brand that grew out of a London salon founded by the hairdresser of the same name. The product line has been owned by the consumer-goods company PZ Cussons since 2004 [4], and is sold internationally. Its products centre on the idea of hair health and strength, drawing on the brand's salon background.
The name covers two distinct things. One is the haircare product brand, owned and operated by PZ Cussons. The other is the Charles Worthington salon business, which remains founder-owned and separate. This article concerns the product brand; the salons appear only where the two stories overlap.
Origin and founders
Charles Worthington trained originally as an architect before moving into hairdressing. According to his own account, he opened his first salon in 1986 in Charlotte Place, London, with his business partner Allan Peters, his sister Jane on reception, and one other stylist [4]. The salon site gives the founding as "over 30 years ago" without naming a year; a search snippet for the salon's heritage page instead dates the first salon to 1987 [8]. The brand uses 1986, the year stated in Charles Worthington's direct quote, while noting the one-year discrepancy in the secondary source.
The salon grew into a London group, and an award-winning haircare line followed. That product business is the part later acquired by PZ Cussons.
History and milestones
PZ Cussons acquired the Charles Worthington hair product business and brand in 2004 [4]. In 2006, the founder was appointed MBE for Services to Hairdressing [6].
In June 2015, Charles Worthington announced the end of his contract and collaboration with PZ Cussons, saying he would give "particular focus" to his role as Creative Director at Charles Worthington Salons [4]. PZ Cussons retained ownership of the product brand and continued to run it after his departure [4]. By that point the brand had expanded into markets including Australia, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.
Ownership
The brand is owned by PZ Cussons plc, headquartered in Manchester. It sits within the company's haircare portfolio alongside brands such as Fudge Professional and Sanctuary Spa [7]; other PZ Cussons beauty and personal-care names include Original Source and St. Tropez. The 2004 acquisition transferred the product business and brand to PZ Cussons, and the founder's 2015 exit did not change that ownership [4].
Philosophy and positioning
The brand positions itself around hair health, summed up in its statement that "when your hair is at its healthiest, it's at its best." Strong hair, the company says, is healthy hair, which it places "at the heart of everything we do." It frames its approach as combining "the best haircare ingredients that nature & science have to offer" to give immediate results, and points to several decades of salon expertise as the basis for its product development. The brand's tagline is "Love Your Healthy Hair."
In recent years the brand has been positioned toward Gen X women, including through a menopause-focused range [7].
Products and innovation
Charles Worthington's range spans shampoos, conditioners, treatments, colour management and styling, organised into lines such as ColourPlex, MenoPlex, Volume & Bounce, ShinePlex, Moisture Seal and Grow Strong. Across these the brand uses what it calls Plex Technology, described as enriching its products to "strengthen hair from within." Its named proprietary ingredient is Keravis Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein, which the brand says repairs hair externally while penetrating the cortex to strengthen it from within [3]. Products carry the brand's "backed by science" messaging, though the technology page cites no specific clinical studies.
The MenoPlex line is part of a wider repositioning. Trade press reported the brand launching a menopause-focused range and refreshed campaign imagery "in a bid to win over Gen X" [7].
Recognition
The brand's recognition is closely tied to its founder. Charles Worthington has been named British Hairdresser of the Year twice, as well as Men's Hairdresser of the Year and Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year, and was appointed MBE in 2006 [6]. As a stylist he counted figures including Sarah Jessica Parker, Sharon Stone, Claire Danes and Jerry Hall among his clients, and served as Official Hair Stylist for the BAFTAs for seven years [6].
Current status
The product brand is owned by PZ Cussons and remains actively marketed. Its most recent visible activity is the 2024–2025 repositioning around the menopause-focused MenoPlex range and updated campaigns aimed at Gen X [7]. The brand is therefore best described as acquired but active: its founder ended his involvement in 2015, while PZ Cussons continues to operate the line as part of its portfolio. The separately owned Charles Worthington salon business is not part of this.
