Overview
Cussons is a British personal-care brand whose name belongs to PZ Cussons plc, a consumer-goods company listed on the London Stock Exchange and headquartered in Manchester. The brand sits within a portfolio built up over more than a century, alongside household names such as Imperial Leather, Carex, Original Source, Sanctuary Spa and St.Tropez. The wider group reports revenue of around £514 million and employs close to 2,500 people, with core markets in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, Nigeria and Indonesia.
Two founding dates attach to the name, reflecting two separate origins. The parent company traces its beginnings to 1884 [1][5], when a trading post was set up in Sierra Leone; the Cussons consumer business itself was established in 1909 [2], in Manchester. The company remains active, with continuing trading updates and portfolio changes into 2025.
Origin and founders
The story runs along two threads that later merged. In 1884, George Paterson and George Zochonis established a trading post in Sierra Leone, West Africa, exchanging commodities between the region and the United Kingdom [5]. Trading as Paterson Zochonis, often shortened to PZ, the firm expanded into Nigeria before the end of the century and grew across Africa, Europe and Asia. The Zochonis family remained closely tied to the business, and the company states that the Zochonis Charitable Trust still supports causes in Sierra Leone, Ghana and northwest England.
The Cussons name has a separate root. In 1909, Alexander Tom Cussons set up the Cussons business above his father's chemist shop in Swinton, Manchester [2]. That enterprise became known above all for soap.
History and milestones
Soap moved to the centre of the trading business in 1948, when the first soap factory opened in Nigeria. By then the Cussons side had already produced its most recognisable product. Imperial Leather bar soap was first made in 1938 at a former bleach mill at Kersal Vale, Salford [6]. The name reaches back further still: according to Wikipedia, it derives from a 1768 perfume commissioned by the Russian count Grigory Orlov and called "Eau de Cologne Imperiale Russe", later adapted into the soap [6]. In the 1950s, Imperial Leather was among the first brands in Britain to advertise on television.
The two threads came together in 1975, when Paterson Zochonis acquired the Cussons Group from the Cussons family [5]. Paterson Zochonis had listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1953, and in 2002 the combined business adopted the name PZ Cussons plc [5]. A run of acquisitions followed, broadening the group well beyond soap.
Ownership
The brand is owned by PZ Cussons plc, the name carried since the 2002 renaming of Paterson Zochonis [5]. Earlier names included Paterson Zochonis and PZ. The group trades on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker PZC and runs significant operations in Nigeria through PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc.
Much of the modern portfolio was assembled by purchase. The company acquired Original Source in 2002, Charles Worthington haircare in 2004, and the bath-and-body brand Sanctuary Spa in 2008 for £75 million [5]. It added the self-tanning brand St.Tropez in 2010, Fudge Professional haircare in 2012, and the baby-and-child brand Childs Farm in 2022. Among these, the company identifies Imperial Leather, Cussons Baby and St.Tropez as signature products of the personal-care range.
Philosophy and positioning
PZ Cussons presents itself as a long-standing consumer-goods group making personal, home and baby care products. The company describes its purpose as "For Everyone. For Life. For Good.", which it frames as a commitment to creating products that "care for, and nourish consumers". Its personal-care brands span everyday body care and hair care and sit largely in the mainstream, drugstore price range rather than at the luxury end.
Sustainability
The group ties its sustainability work to the same stated purpose and a "Better by Design" approach, which it says builds environmental and social considerations into product design, sourcing, manufacturing and delivery. The strategy is organised under three headings: environmental impact, social impact, and managing its own impact, covering areas from packaging and water use to labour practices and governance. PZ Cussons is a signatory of the UN Global Compact, aligning with its principles on human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption, and it joined the UK Packaging Pact as a founding signatory.
Controversies
As a large maker of personal-care goods, the group has faced scrutiny over palm oil. The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre logged an inquiry regarding alleged palm oil supply-chain violations, to which PZ Cussons issued a response [9]. Such sourcing scrutiny is common across large consumer-goods companies.
Current status
PZ Cussons remains an active, listed company. Recent years have brought financial strain and portfolio change. Economic conditions in Nigeria, including high inflation and currency devaluation, contributed to a reported loss of £95.9 million in the year to 31 May 2024. In 2025 the company agreed to sell its 50% stake in the Nigerian edible-oils joint venture PZ Wilmar to its partner Wilmar International for about £51 million, a move described as simplifying the group [7]. Trade press reported that the company subsequently returned toward profit [8], while a profit warning for the year ending May 2025 cited extra UK packaging-recycling costs and falling United States sales of St.Tropez. After a strategic review, the company decided to keep St.Tropez rather than sell it, and announced a North American distribution partnership for the brand with the Emerson Group.
