Overview
Cherigan, presented today as Cherigan Paris 1929, is a French niche perfume house founded in Paris in 1929 and relaunched in 2021 [2]. Its modern incarnation works exclusively in extrait de parfum, the most concentrated fragrance form, and frames its identity around the Art Deco Paris of the 1920s and 1930s. The house was revived by Luc Gabriel, founder of the perfumery The Different Company, together with Sophie Gabriel, after Gabriel came across the dormant name in perfumery archives [12].
The original house opened a boutique at 120 Champs-Élysées and, during the 1930s, added a second location in Havana, Cuba. Sources disagree on who founded it. In an interview with the editorial site ALZD, Luc Gabriel said the brand was "created in 1929, supposedly by a Czech immigrant, but in fact by a wealthy French family," correcting an attribution to a Czech immigrant, Ota Polacek, that appears in fragrance databases such as Fragrantica [11][14]. The 1929 founding date itself is not in dispute.
History
Cherigan emerged during the Art Deco period, which the house describes as an "enchanted parenthesis" between the end of the pre-war world and the industrial modernity that followed. The company says early creations included Chance, Parisienne and Fleurs de Tabac, and that it perfumed figures in the Montparnasse and Montmartre circles. Through the 1930s the portfolio grew with names such as Bleu Impérial, Jupons and Havana Cuba, and the house had its luxury bottles made by the Cristalleries de Nancy. Over the later twentieth century the brand fell into obscurity, which the house attributes to commercial exploitation.
The revival began in 2016, when Luc Gabriel encountered Cherigan while researching 1930s perfumery and began tracking down its history. By his account the reconstruction took five years and involved consulting collectors, perfumers and specialists to recover roughly fifteen distinct Cherigan fragrances, with original bottles sourced from France, the United States and Australia through auctions and private collections [5]. Vintage formulas were studied using chromatograph analysis and then adjusted to meet present-day IFRA fragrance-safety standards. The relaunched range appeared in 2021 with seven fragrances, combining reworked period compositions with new creations [12]. In 2023 the house issued a Bleu Impérial limited edition modelled on an original 1945 bottle acquired at auction from an American collector [6].
Products and innovation
Cherigan sells its perfumes only in extrait de parfum concentration, a choice the company links to the "absolute freedom of creation" it associates with the 1920s. The current line spans roughly ten fragrances across floral, oriental, woody and fruity styles, among them Shanghai le Soir, Bleu Impérial, Lovers in Pink and Fleurs de Tabac. Reworked period scents sit alongside newer compositions; The Purple Bar, for instance, takes its cue from the relationship between writers Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller in 1920s Paris. Hero materials cited by the house include a distinctive sandalwood album and particular facets of ylang-ylang extraction.
The niche editorial site CaFleureBon, reviewing Fleurs de Tabac and The Purple Bar in 2022, described Fleurs de Tabac as opening "both fresh and powdery" on bergamot and irone and as appealing to "lovers of vintage perfumes" while keeping a contemporary feel. The reviewer also noted that Luc Gabriel declined to name the perfumers, saying only that there were five [12].
A recurring theme is the bottle itself. The house works with a master glassmaker who lacquers the base of each flacon for an optical effect, and uses heavy metal caps engraved with a "C" that it says take several hours to finish. Among the archive pieces the company highlights a rare Mascarades flacon, made at the Nancy glassworks, which it calls "likely the last perfect example in the world" [6].
Cherigan has also developed a proprietary applicator system it calls The Touch, sold in a 15-millilitre format. The cap holds a transparent applicator with a few drops of pure extract; according to the company, opening the bottle lets the applicator refill on its own through capillary action, releasing the perfume drop by drop on contact with skin [8]. The house presents it as a portable revival of an older way of applying scent.
Philosophy and positioning
Cherigan positions itself as a French heritage niche house bridging vintage authenticity and a modern outlook, and it describes its aim as reconnecting audiences with the "spirit of liberty and joie de vivre" of the Art Deco years. The company also frames "haute parfumerie" as something it wants to make more accessible, saying it keeps pricing contained by limiting the intermediaries between manufacturing and sale.
On sourcing and sustainability, Cherigan states that its products are composed and manufactured entirely in France, with components drawn mainly from France or Italy, and that formulations contain up to 99% natural ingredients. The company says its packaging is recycled or more than 99% recyclable, and characterises its clean-formulation stance as avoiding "the sirens of green washing" [4].
Recognition
Cherigan's 2021 relaunch drew coverage in niche fragrance media, including a Fragrantica feature on its appearance at the Pitti Fragranze trade show and the CaFleureBon and ALZD pieces noted above [13]. The house also lists ELLE, Vanity Fair, Madame Figaro and Le Monde as press mentions on its own site, though the specific articles are not detailed there.
Current status
Cherigan is active. The house has continued to expand its collection, with launches such as the 2023 Bleu Impérial limited edition and the more recent Shanghai le Soir, and it is distributed through niche perfumery retailers including Jovoy Paris in France and Les Senteurs in the United Kingdom [9].
