Overview
CurrentBody is a British beauty-technology company based in Manchester, founded in 2009 by Laurence Newman and Andrew Showman [6]. It began as an online retailer dedicated to at-home beauty devices and later added its own product line, CurrentBody Skin, best known for LED light-therapy masks. The company sells both third-party devices and its own-brand range across more than 80 countries, and remains actively trading.
Since November 2021 it has been majority-owned by eComplete, an e-commerce group founded in 2020 by former executives of The Hut Group [6].
Origin & founders
The company was started by two founders from different backgrounds. Laurence Newman, a Manchester University graduate, had spent years in the aesthetics industry as a former medical-clinic owner and supplier of professional devices. Andrew Showman had previously built a digital-camera e-commerce business. According to the company, the two combined forces in 2009 on the premise that consumers would eventually want to buy professional-grade beauty devices for use at home, and launched CurrentBody as an online store devoted entirely to that category.
In a later interview, Newman recalled the original idea plainly: "one day people would want to buy beauty devices that they could use at home" — and described the goal as becoming "the online destination for home-use beauty devices" [7]. Before the eComplete deal, the business had been backed by the venture funds Mercia and BGF.
History & milestones
For its first decade CurrentBody operated primarily as a specialist retailer of devices made by other manufacturers. The pivotal shift came in 2019, when it launched its own-brand line, CurrentBody Skin, beginning with a flexible LED light-therapy face mask [7]. The company says it was the first to create a flexible LED mask of this kind [1].
In November 2021, eComplete acquired a £50 million majority stake in the business [6]. At the time, CurrentBody operated 17 international websites and a joint venture in China, and trade press reported that the home-use LED category had grown sharply in the preceding year. The brand has continued to expand its CurrentBody Skin range — adding LED neck and décolletage masks, an LED hair-growth helmet, radio-frequency devices and an infrared sauna blanket — and publishes ongoing clinical testing, with a Eurofins efficacy study dated 2025 [3].
Ownership
CurrentBody has been majority-owned by eComplete since the November 2021 transaction [6]. eComplete was founded in 2020 by Paul Gedman, formerly chief executive of The Hut Group's luxury-beauty division, and Andy Duckworth, formerly chief executive of the THG subsidiary Myprotein. Despite the change of ownership, the business continues to operate under the CurrentBody name and brand.
Philosophy & positioning
CurrentBody positions itself around verification rather than promotional claims, summarised on its site as "we don't just promise quality, we prove it." The company says it brings technologies used in aesthetic clinics into at-home devices and validates them through independent clinical testing, working with doctors, dermatologists and university researchers. Its devices sit at the prestige end of the market: the LED Red Light Therapy Face Mask (Series 2) is listed at £399.99 and the LED Hair Growth Helmet at £649.99.
Products & innovation
The signature product is the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Face Mask, now in its Series 2 form; Vogue Scandinavia describes the device as carrying 236 LED bulbs combining red and near-infrared light in a single ten-minute session [5]. The wider own-brand range includes an LED hair-growth helmet, an LED neck and décolletage mask, a radio-frequency skin-tightening device, a blue-light face mask and an infrared sauna blanket. Alongside these, the retailer also stocks partner devices such as the Dermalux Flex MD.
Underpinning the own-brand line is a proprietary testing system the company calls Veritace, described as "a unique end-to-end production & testing system" that measures and selects only LEDs meeting set precision standards, with the tagline "every device. Individually tested. Proven to perform." [4]
The company supports its devices with a series of independent studies. An SGS 56-day study of 35 participants reported a 36 percent increase in skin hydration and improvements in elasticity and firmness, while an Intertek 84-day hair-growth study of 31 participants reported reduced hair loss and increased hair-growth rate [3]. The brand states that its LED devices are FDA-cleared and CE-certified for at-home use [6]. Further studies are run with the University of Manchester's Centre for Dermatology Research and with Eurofins.
Recognition
CurrentBody's LED mask gained wide attention after appearing in the opening scene of the Netflix series Emily in Paris, which trade coverage credits with driving viral interest in the brand [6]. Editorial coverage has named figures such as Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham among its users. Vogue Scandinavia ranked the CurrentBody Skin LED Mask Series 2 as its number-one "Best LED mask overall," calling it "a fuss-free option for anyone who wants pro-level results at home" [5]. Marie Claire has described the company as an industry leader in at-home light-therapy devices.
Current status
CurrentBody is active. It trades as both a retailer and an own-brand developer, operating multiple international websites and selling across more than 80 countries, with clinical studies published as recently as 2025 [3]. Its devices continue to be sold under the CurrentBody Skin name, and the company remains majority-owned by eComplete.
