Summary

Overview

Victorinox is a Swiss manufacturing house founded in 1884 in Ibach, in the canton of Schwyz, and best known outside beauty for the Swiss Army Knife [1]. Its relevance to fragrance comes from the Victorinox Swiss Army perfume line, an in-house Swiss-made business that the company has run alongside its knives, cutlery, watches and travel gear. The company remains active: it operates in more than 120 countries, and the fragrance line released a new scent, Quartz, in 2024.

The house is owned not by a family or an investor but by two foundations — the Victorinox-Stiftung, which holds 90 percent, and the Carl und Elise Elsener-Gut Stiftung, which holds the remaining 10 percent [6]. That structure keeps ownership tied to the founding family's legacy rather than to outside shareholders.

Origin & founders

The company began as a cutler's workshop opened by Karl Elsener I in Ibach-Schwyz, with the support of his mother, Victoria [3]. In 1897 Elsener patented the "Original Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife," the product that would become known worldwide as the Swiss Army Knife [3]. The following decades gave the company its name in stages. In 1909 the brand "Victoria" was adopted in memory of Elsener's mother, and the Cross & Shield emblem was registered as a trademark. In 1921, after stainless steel — "inox," from the French acier inoxydable — came into use, the company combined "Victoria" and "inox" to arrive at Victorinox [6]. The legal name Victorinox AG followed in 1979.

History & milestones

Elsener's early years were closely tied to the Swiss Army. In 1891 he founded an association of Swiss master cutlers and delivered the first major supply of soldier's knives to the army. The Swiss Army Knife patent of 1897 anchored the company's identity for the next century.

In 2005 Victorinox acquired Wenger SA, the long-standing Swiss knife and watch manufacturer based in Delémont, becoming the sole supplier of multi-purpose knives to the Swiss Army while keeping the Wenger brand in its portfolio [6].

The fragrance business is a more recent chapter, and sources differ on when it began. Multiple fragrance databases date the first Victorinox scent, Swiss Army, to 1997 [7], while Wikipedia states that "in 2018, Victorinox marketed a perfume under the name 'Swiss Army'" [6]. The 1997 date reflects the documented first release; the 2018 reference appears to describe a later event rather than the line's origin. The line has since grown to more than two dozen releases, with Quartz arriving in 2024.

Ownership

Victorinox is foundation-owned. The Victorinox-Stiftung holds 90 percent and the Carl und Elise Elsener-Gut Stiftung holds 10 percent [6]. Its 2005 purchase of Wenger SA remains the notable acquisition in its history.

Philosophy & positioning

The company describes itself as "Founded on integrity and family values," citing "a rock solid heritage, exacting commitment to Swiss precision and a consistent focus on quality and innovation" [1]. Sustainability is listed among its core values [1]. For the perfume line specifically, Victorinox says its fragrances "capture the unique essence of Switzerland, from its fresh mountain air and crystal clear waters, to the relentless innovation and sophistication of its cities," and describes them as "thoughtfully composed using in-house Swiss expertise." The house markets the fragrance range under the tagline "From the makers of the original Swiss Army Knife."

Products & innovation

Victorinox's corporate business spans five categories — Swiss Army Knives and tools, cutlery, watches, travel gear, and personalization services — with the 1897 knife patent as its defining innovation.

The Victorinox Swiss Army fragrance line runs separately from the tools business but is produced by the company itself. The brand states that "all Victorinox fragrances are Swiss made, from product development to production." Its first scent was conceived by the perfumer Harry Fremont of Firmenich, and the company describes it with top notes of mint and orange, a heart of cypress and lavender, and a base of amber.

Controversies

In October 2018, Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement (Armasuisse) sued Victorinox over its trademark registrations for "Swiss Army" and "Swiss Military," seeking their removal from the marketplace [6].
