Overview
Dr. Schumacher is a German family-owned manufacturer of disinfection, hygiene, cleaning and personal-care products, headquartered in Malsfeld-Beiseförth in North Hesse. The chemist Henning Schumacher founded the company in 1978 [2], running it at first from the garage and basement of his home in nearby Melsungen [10]. It is known above all for the disinfectants used in hospitals, medical practices and care homes, and for the dry and wet wipes it produces in very large volumes, both under its own name and for other companies.
Its link to personal care runs mainly through the skin: hand and skin disinfectants formulated for frequent use, dermatologically tested cosmetic and body-care wipes, and care products made for retailers and brand owners. The company is still owned by the Schumacher family and remains active, with a 2026 product catalogue, a management change in March 2026 and a steady calendar of appearances at hygiene congresses.
Origin & founders
Henning Schumacher (1938–2005) was born in Kiel and trained as a chemist, earning a doctorate. In the 1970s he worked at B. Braun in Melsungen, in northern Hesse. On 13 February 1978 he went into business for himself, founding Dr. Schumacher GmbH and working out of his own house until the space ran out.
The company today describes the founding as an act of the founder's pioneering spirit. It says the idea behind its products from the start was disinfectants that are highly effective, low in hazardous substances and easy to use, and that his guiding principle still applies: people and their health come first in everything it does.
Once the house became too small, Schumacher moved the business to Malsfeld-Beiseförth, where it has been based since 1983. It has stayed there ever since. The company presents its loyalty to the North Hesse location, alongside what it calls a values-driven culture, as part of what makes it a family business.
History & milestones
From 1984 the company also began producing under its own brand, "Dr. Schumacher". Later in the 1980s it brought to market the first instrument disinfectant free of both aldehydes and phenols [10], two groups of chemical agents. During the 1990s it built the Dr. Schumacher brand up in the medical supply trade, in hospitals and in elderly care, both in Germany and abroad.
At the end of the 1990s Henning Schumacher handed the business to his two sons, Dierk and Jens, one trained as a chemist and the other as a pharmacist. According to the company, they carried their father's philosophy forward, and research and development of new products has shaped its history since. The first decade of the 21st century brought rapid growth: the workforce rose from about 50 to 650 people as the company expanded internationally.
A major setback came in 2012, when a large fire struck the company's plant in Lubań, Poland. After a long period of reconstruction the factory reopened in 2016, and as of 2024 it was being expanded further [10]. Lubań has since become the company's largest production site.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the sharpest swing in its recent history. In 2020 the company doubled its production within a few weeks to meet the sudden demand for disinfectants, and revenue peaked at 253 million euros in that financial year [10]. Sales then settled back to around 200 million euros a year; in 2021 the group recorded revenue of 203.7 million euros with an average of 1,477 employees.
Management has broadened in the 2020s. Dierk Schumacher leads the company; Dirk Hamenstädt joined him as a second managing director in April 2022 and was succeeded by Tim Steffens in March 2026. The company's legal notice now names Dierk Schumacher and Tim Steffens as its managing directors [6].
Ownership
Dr. Schumacher has been owned by the Schumacher family since it was founded, and the company states that it is, and will remain, a 100 percent family business [3]. No parent group, outside investor or acquisition is documented. Ownership passed from the founder to his sons in the late 1990s, and a member of the second generation still runs the business day to day.
The family firm has grown into an international group. By its own account it employs more than 1,600 people in eight countries, around 400 of them at the headquarters and close to 1,000 at the Lubań plant, and works with a network of distribution partners in 70 countries [2]. Besides its two main factories, it runs newly built production lines in Izmir, Turkey, and Pune, India, which it says let it respond quickly to customers in those countries and their neighbours. Further sales offices are located in Austria, Switzerland, Portugal and Jordan.
Philosophy & positioning
The company's tagline is "Wir schützen Deine Gesundheit" ("We protect your health"), and the phrase runs through its website, from the medical range to the household products. Dr. Schumacher describes itself as one of Europe's leading manufacturers of disinfection and hygiene products [2], and elsewhere as a leading European specialist in wet wipes. An independent account supports the second point in part: in 2010 the company was described as the European market leader in wet wipes, with around 100 million packs produced that year [10]. In 2018 it made more than 11,300 tonnes of disinfectants for skin, hands and surfaces, along with roughly 500 million packs of wet wipes of all kinds.
Its core audience is medical staff. The company says effective hygiene should not depend on the user's specialist knowledge, so it aims for products that anyone can apply quickly and correctly without compromising on ingredients or effectiveness. It extends the same promise to households through its Professional@home line, which brings its disinfection products into everyday home use.
The business rests on three strands. Alongside its own brand, it develops and makes private-label and OEM products, meaning goods produced for other companies to sell under their own names. Its customers here include brand manufacturers, drugstore chains, discounters and retail chains. It also offers consulting and services to other companies in healthcare and in disinfection and hygiene. The company notes that it is a certified manufacturer of medical devices, medicinal products, biocides and cosmetics.
In its mission statement, Dr. Schumacher says customers and consumers should always be able to count on a reliable supply of high-quality, innovative and effective cleaning, cosmetic, hygiene and disinfection products. It names loyalty, appreciation and sustainability as its core values. On the environmental side, the company says it operates a validated environmental management system, works daily to reduce the direct and indirect environmental impact of its sites, and has been certified in this area for more than ten years.
Locally, the company supports the football club SG Malsfeld/Beiseförth and social projects in North Hesse such as the "Aktion Advent" campaign, as well as the fire brigade at its Polish site in Lubań. In early 2025 it sent 30 pallets of cleaning products and disinfectants to Ukraine in connection with the war there.
Products & innovation
The medical range covers hand and skin disinfection, surface disinfection, the reprocessing of medical instruments and application aids such as dispensers. ASEPTOMAN MED, an alcohol-based hand disinfectant, is what the company calls its "No. 1" for daily use in hospitals, practices and care facilities. According to the manufacturer, it works within 30 seconds, meets the "limited virucidal PLUS" standard and is effective against noro-, adeno- and rotaviruses. The company attributes its skin tolerance to added refatting agents, which help replace the skin's natural oils, and says the formula has always been free of quaternary ammonium compounds, a class of disinfecting agents often called "quats".
The ULTRASOL OXY family is approved both as a biocide and as a class IIb medical device, and the company describes it as virucidal and sporicidal, for use in routine cleaning as well as during outbreaks [1]. Descosept Sensitive Wipes, another disinfection product, use a nonwoven fabric that the company says is 100 percent biodegradable. For care settings, Dr. Schumacher also promotes a hand-hygiene concept that combines product, container and dispenser into a single system.
Outside healthcare, the EW80 range cleans and maintains breathing-protection equipment for fire brigades, police and rescue services, and is also used by divers to care for their gear. The company calls it one of the most widely known products of its kind internationally.
The consumer-goods side is where the company comes closest to beauty. Its wipes programme spans baby-care wipes and self-foaming washing gloves, household cleaning wipes, dermatologically tested cosmetic care wipes, body-care wipes with formulas adapted to different parts of the body, disinfection wipes and wipes for home care. The largest wipes plant is at Lubań, where more than 60,000 square metres of production space turn out wipes for disinfection, hygiene, personal care, household use, baby care and cosmetics [5]. The headquarters in Malsfeld-Beiseförth, which also houses research and development, concentrates on liquid disinfectants and other liquid hygiene and cleaning products.
Recognition
In 2024 Dr. Schumacher, together with two supplier partners, won first place in the sustainability category of the German Packaging Award (Deutscher Verpackungspreis), given each year by the German Packaging Institute [9]. The winning entry was the packaging for the company's "Clean Up" all-purpose wet wipes, made with film containing 30 percent post-consumer recycled material. The recycled content comes from used beverage packaging, reprocessed into a recycled low-density polyethylene suitable for flexible packs. A 27-member jury chose 41 winners across ten categories from almost 250 entries from 13 countries.
In 2025 the town of Lubań awarded the company its merit medal as one of the largest employers in the region.
Current status
Dr. Schumacher is active. Marking 48 years in 2026, the company publishes a 2026 general catalogue and, as of September 2026, was announcing appearances at the DGSV annual congress in Wolfsburg and at the Freiburg congress on infectious diseases and hygiene in October. The appointment of Tim Steffens as second managing director in March 2026 is the most recent change in its leadership, with Dierk Schumacher continuing to head the family-owned company.
