Summary

Overview

Elie Saab is a Lebanese couture house founded in Beirut, with a beauty presence built almost entirely on a licensed fragrance line. The company dates its founding to 1982, when the designer Elie Saab — born in Beirut in 1964 — opened his fashion house at the age of 18 [1]. A Wikipedia infobox instead lists 1998, but that figure is contradicted by the same article's own timeline, which records that Saab "started business at age 18," and by the brand's account; the 1982 date is the better-supported one [4][1]. The house remains active, with current seasonal collections and a fragrance range still in distribution.

For Glowpedia's purposes the relevant facet is scent rather than couture. Elie Saab's perfumes are not produced in-house but made under a global licence, and that licence has changed hands once — a detail that shapes who actually creates and sells the fragrances today.

Origin and founders

Elie Saab began in a small Beirut atelier and grew into an international label known for embroidered evening and bridal wear. According to the company, the founder's "vision for elegance and craftsmanship has redefined modern luxury," a narrative it frames around blending "Middle Eastern heritage with European refinement." The Perfume Society notes that Saab expanded his workshop from roughly a dozen seamstresses to more than a hundred, producing between 800 and 1,000 made-to-measure gowns a year and dressing several Middle Eastern royals [5].

The house gained wider recognition in 2002, when Halle Berry wore an Elie Saab gown to accept the Best Actress award at the Academy Awards — by Wikipedia's account, the first time a Lebanese designer dressed an Oscar winner [4].

The fragrance line

Elie Saab entered beauty through fragrance. The first scent, Le Parfum, launched in 2011 and was composed by the perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who conceived it as an "ode to light" [5]. The Perfume Society describes a composition built on orange blossom and jasmine — both grandiflorum and sambac — over a cedar-woody base sweetened with rose honey. In its debut year Le Parfum won the Fragrance Foundation (FiFi) Award for Best New Fragrance in the United Kingdom, the United States and France [5], and Wikipedia describes it as a bestseller across fifteen countries [4].

The range later broadened to include Girl of Now, the men's fragrances L'Homme and L'Homme Intense, Le Parfum Absolu and Elixir. The brand presents L'Homme as "a sophisticated woody vetiver fragrance for men." Many of the line's scents, including a series of single-ingredient Essences, were also created by Kurkdjian.

Ownership and licensing

The Elie Saab fashion house itself remains independent and founder-owned; its fragrances and cosmetics, however, operate under an external licence. In 2009 the house signed a ten-year fragrance and cosmetics agreement with Beauté Prestige International, a division of Shiseido [6][8]. At the signing, Saab said creating a fragrance had "become an essential step of the development of our couture house" [6].

That arrangement was later superseded. Multiple 2021 trade reports state that the global perfume and cosmetics licence moved to the Switzerland-based company Brands Beyond Beauty, effective 1 January 2021 [7]. Under the new deal, Brands Beyond Beauty manages "the entire strategic and operational creation, distribution, online and offline sales and marketing" of the perfumes and cosmetics. The current licensee is therefore Brands Beyond Beauty, with the earlier Beauté Prestige International agreement now historical.

Philosophy and positioning

Positioned at the luxury end of the market, the brand ties its fragrances to its couture identity. Le Parfum was conceived to translate that aesthetic into scent, and the company describes its wider legacy in terms of "timeless sophistication and originality" [1]. The fragrances are sold through Elie Saab boutiques and selected retailers.

Recognition

Beyond the 2011 FiFi Award, the couture house carries several notable firsts cited by Wikipedia: Saab was the first non-Italian designer admitted to Italy's national fashion chamber, and the first Lebanese designer to join the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris [4]. The Halle Berry moment at the 2002 Oscars remains the house's best-known entry into the wider cultural spotlight.

Sustainability

The brand has tied its fragrance to relief efforts in its home city. Around the 2021 relaunch of Le Parfum, coinciding with the scent's tenth anniversary, a portion of sales was pledged to support reconstruction in Beirut [7].

Current status

Elie Saab is an active global house, with boutiques in Beirut, Paris, New York, London, Milan and the Gulf and current 2026 collections live on its site. The fragrance line continues to be licensed and distributed by Brands Beyond Beauty.
