Summary

Overview

Engel Apotheken is a group of community pharmacies in Fulda and the neighbouring municipality of Petersberg, in the German state of Hesse. Besides medicines and health advice, the group sells its own cosmetics line, ENGEL-Kosmetik, which it presents as an in-house label for skin and body care made in Italy. Its website lists five branches and around 60 employees [1], with the main office at the Justus-Liebig-Center shopping centre in Petersberg. All branches come under the Hessian pharmacy supervisory authority and the state chamber of pharmacists for Hesse [5].

The Engel-Apotheke on Karlstraße in Fulda's city centre occupies a listed building whose architecture dates from 1753; regional press has called it one of the oldest pharmacies in the city [7]. That date belongs to the building, not to the business, and no founding year is documented for either the pharmacy group or its cosmetics line. The group is active and changed hands in June 2025, when pharmacist Daniel Reuschel took over from Dr. Ansgar Wieschollek [8].

History & milestones

The group's documented history begins with Wieschollek, a pharmacist who started operating the Engel-Apotheke on Karlstraße in April 2011. In the autumn of 2013 he closed the city-centre shop for about four weeks of renovation, an investment that the local news site Osthessen|News put in the six-figure euro range. Tradesmen reportedly worked from six in the morning until ten at night through October to finish the job.

The main addition was an automated dispensing system, a robot holding around 11,000 products. Wieschollek told reporters that it gave staff more time to deal with customers' needs and questions. The reopening also brought a new cosmetics area, the first documented step towards the beauty offer the group runs today. By then Wieschollek was operating four pharmacies with 40 employees in total [7]. In the same interview he criticised internet pharmacies, arguing that supplying medicines should not be reduced to the mere distribution of products, and stressed the value of a personal relationship between pharmacist and customer.

The next documented step came in March 2019. The Orchideen-Apotheke on Schlitzer Straße in Horas, a district of Fulda, passed to Wieschollek, whom the local newspaper described as the operator of the Engel-Apotheken [9]. Pharmacist Martin Schütz had founded the Orchideen-Apotheke in 1994 and ran it for 25 years. After the handover it became an Engel-Apotheke. All six employees of the 195-square-metre shop kept their jobs, and Schütz stayed on behind the counter as deputy manager.

Schütz presented the change as a way to keep a pharmacy in the centre of Horas. He described growing pressure on independent pharmacists from online mail-order and said that almost 600 pharmacies had closed across Germany in the previous year. The Engel-Apotheken expansion in Horas thus took place against a wider background of consolidation in German community pharmacy.

By mid-2025 the group consisted of four branches: Am Buttermarkt in Fulda's city centre, Am Frauenberg near the Herz-Jesu hospital, Horas, and the Justus-Liebig-Center in Petersberg [8].

Ownership

Daniel Reuschel has owned the Engel-Apotheken since 1 June 2025. His predecessor Wieschollek stepped down as owner for health reasons, according to the local paper Petersberg Aktuell, but remains active in the business "in the second row" [10].

Reuschel's route to Fulda was shaped by a disaster elsewhere. He had worked as a pharmacist since 2009 after studying pharmacy in Marburg, and became self-employed in 2012. At one point he ran three pharmacies in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, including one in the Ahr valley. The 2021 floods destroyed his pharmacy in Bad Neuenahr, and he later told regional reporters that the family had lost its entire livelihood there. He met Wieschollek through a shared tax adviser. Reuschel joined the Fulda business on 1 April 2025 and worked for two months as an employee to prepare the handover and get to know a team then numbering 54 people. He said he intended to sharpen the pharmacies' profile and broaden their offer.

The legal structure is set out in the group's imprint. Four branches are registered with Daniel Reuschel as sole trader and owner, while the fifth, Engel Apotheke am Bahnhof in Fulda, lists a different owner, Mohamad Ali, and a separate VAT number. The imprint also names IDR Holding UG (haftungsbeschränkt), a limited company based in Bad Arolsen with Reuschel as managing director; its role within the group is not spelled out [5].

The size of the group depends on the date of the account. Osthessen|News reported four pharmacies and 40 staff in November 2013, and four branches with 54 staff in June 2025 [8]. The group's own website gives five branches and 60 employees [1]. The figures do not contradict each other: the Am Bahnhof branch appears on the website and in the imprint but not in the June 2025 coverage of the ownership change.

Philosophy & positioning

Engel Apotheken describes itself as a "health pharmacy" with a holistic approach. The company defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and says it views the body as an integrated system [4]. Its advisory work covers natural medicines, homeopathy, travel medicine, diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure, minerals and food supplements, alongside free services such as blood-pressure checks, inhaler instruction and medication reviews.

Cosmetics are framed as part of that health offer rather than as a separate beauty business. The group's stated philosophy for its cosmetics department is "healthy, well-cared-for and radiant skin for a lifetime", and the section carries the tagline "Ihr gutes Aussehen in besten Händen" ("your good looks in the best hands"). The own label is positioned as a pharmacy house brand: according to the company, it is "our own house brand in cosmetics and care", sold through the group's pharmacies and its online shop [2].

Customer loyalty is tied into the same system. A customer card stores a personal medication profile that the pharmacy says is checked automatically for interactions and allergies, and a local rewards scheme, the Fulda-Taler, applies to purchases of cosmetics and food supplements.

Products & innovation

ENGEL-Kosmetik is a small line. The company calls it "heavenly cosmetics for your skin health" and names two products on its brand page: a nourishing hand cream with honey (Nährende Handcreme mit Honig) and a shower and bath oil with allantoin for sensitive and dry skin (Duschbadeöl mit Allantoin). Honey and allantoin are the only ingredients the group highlights.

Manufacturing takes place in Italy. Engel Apotheken says the range is produced in "one of the most modern laboratories in Europe" according to the latest scientific findings. The company further states that all products have been dermatologically tested and checked for allergens at university hospitals in Berlin, Munich and Freiburg, and that this gives them high effectiveness and safety [3]. The specific clinics are not named, and no independent confirmation of the testing is documented. No third-party certifications are documented either.

The cosmetics offer extends beyond the bottled products. Above the Am Buttermarkt branch, the group runs a cosmetics studio on a separate beauty and wellness floor. Two beauticians there offer classic facials, device-based treatments, skin diagnosis, treatment of blemishes, hair removal, aqua facials and fruit-acid peels, as well as medical foot care and foot reflexology massage. The studio also offers Dr. Hauschka treatments, including a classic facial following the method of Elisabeth Sigmund, using products from that separate natural-cosmetics brand.

Skin analysis links the studio to the shelf. The group says it uses a skin-measuring device to assess loss of moisture, oil or elasticity, then matches the treatment to the customer's skin type. For the studio work it says it uses products from established cosmetics manufacturers, while ENGEL-Kosmetik is presented as "the good stuff from our own house".

Current status

Engel Apotheken is active. Its website lists five operating branches in Fulda and Petersberg with opening hours, an online shop, a delivery service with same-day delivery for orders placed early in the day, support for electronic prescriptions, and a current list of studio treatments. The most recent dated news coverage concerns the June 2025 change of ownership, and the appearance of the Am Bahnhof branch on the website points to further change since then. The group maintains accounts on Instagram and Facebook.

ENGEL-Kosmetik is sold through the group's own pharmacies and online shop. No wider retail distribution of the line has been documented.
