Summary

Overview

Escentric Molecules is a German niche fragrance house founded in 2006 and based in Berlin [1]. It built its reputation on a single idea: putting the synthetic aroma-molecule at the centre of a scent rather than hiding it inside a blend. The house is often described, including on its own pages, as an "anti-fragrance fragrance brand," a label it embraced as it grew from a garage operation into an international name.

The brand remains independent and founder-led, and in 2026 it marked its 20th anniversary with a new release and plans for its first physical store in Berlin [3].

Origin and founders

The brand grew out of perfumer Geza Schoen's fixation with Iso E Super, an aroma-molecule first created in 1973 at the fragrance-and-flavour company IFF [6]. Schoen noticed that many of the fragrances he admired shared one trait: a heavy dose of this single ingredient. "I realised that the common denominator in all the fragrances I liked was that they contained a large dose of it," he has said. He described the raw material in near-addictive terms, calling it "like a drug" and saying that "one sniff and you want the whole bottle."

Accounts of who founded the house vary slightly. The brand's About page foregrounds Schoen alone as the perfumer behind the project [1], while its 20th-anniversary journal article and outside profiles in BeautyMatter and The Perfume Society credit creative director Paul White as co-founder [3][5]. By the anniversary article's telling, Schoen treated the partnership as decisive: "Meeting Paul White was the initial ignition. It felt like the spark that ignited the project." In practice the two are described as perfumer-founder and creative co-founder.

The early operation was deliberately small. Schoen has recalled borrowing a friend's workspace and bottling and crimping the first few thousand bottles by hand [5], a beginning the brand's own history places in a London garage.

Philosophy and positioning

The concept rests on a paired structure. Each release comes in two forms: an "Escentric" composition, in which a featured aroma-molecule is surrounded by complementary notes, and a "Molecule" version, in which that same molecule is presented on its own. The Perfume Society describes the split as the "Escentric" title denoting an aroma chemical combined with other ingredients, and the "Molecule" title signifying the molecule "allowed to stand on its own in the spotlight."

The company frames the house around simplicity, individuality and independence, summarising its outlook as being "about simplicity and sophistication." Schoen has tied the appeal of Iso E Super to the wearer's own skin, saying it "blossoms on the skin, adding a velvety radiance to your own individual scent signature." The brand emerged during the rise of niche perfumery in the 2000s, a wave that BeautyMatter places alongside houses such as Nasomatto, Byredo, By Kilian and Francis Kurkdjian [5].

Independence is presented as a deliberate stance. Schoen has said he would not consider selling the company: "We are our own bosses and it is all fabulous as it is right now" [5].

Products and innovation

The debut in 2006 set the template. Escentric 01 was built around what the brand calls an unprecedented 65% concentration of Iso E Super [1], while Molecule 01 used the molecule alone. The brand says Molecule 01 "made aroma-chemicals sexy," and the single-ingredient idea became the house's signature, later extended through a numbered series of paired Escentric and Molecule scents.

Across these pairs the house has foregrounded different aroma-molecules, including Iso E Super, Ambroxan, Vetiveryl Acetate, Javanol and Cashmeran [5]. Later additions include the Molecule+ line, which combines Molecule 01 with botanical notes, and Cologne One, marketed as "cologne without constraints."

The house leans on the science of its central ingredient. It cites the discovery, credited to Professor Hanns Hatt, that Iso E Super is "the only known aroma-molecule to activate a human pheromone receptor" [3].

Recognition

Molecule 01's launch is the most cited moment in the brand's story. According to the company, it became "the single best-selling item in Liberty's history" and sold out completely at Harvey Nichols with what it calls the longest waiting list in that store's history [3]. The Perfume Society describes the launch as "a phenomenon with perfumistas of both sexes going crazy" for the scent. The brand has also circulated anecdotes of wearers "being chased down the street by strangers" asking what they were wearing. BeautyMatter profiled the house and its founder under the heading "Fragrance Industry Icon: Geza Schoen and Escentric Molecules."

Current status

Escentric Molecules is active and remains independent and founder-led. In 2026 it published a 20th-anniversary article, "20 Years of Breaking Rules," released a new fragrance, Cologne One, and described its first physical Berlin store as in development [3]. It sells internationally through its own website and a network of stockists.
