Summary

Overview

Byredo is a Swedish fragrance and lifestyle brand founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham [3]. Built around perfume but extending into makeup, home fragrance, accessories and, more recently, fine jewelry, the company is known for a pared-back Scandinavian aesthetic paired with conceptual, memory-driven scents. Since May 2022 it has been majority-owned by the Spanish group Puig, which is reported to have since taken full ownership [4][5].

The brand sits in the luxury tier and operates internationally, selling through its own flagship spaces and high-end retailers. Trade press has described it as a "cult independent fragrance brand," citing scents such as Mojave Ghost and Gypsy Water [5].

Origin & founders

Byredo was established in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, a former art student with a Canadian-Indian background who entered perfumery without formal industry training [3]. The name is a portmanteau of "by redolence" — redolence meaning a strong, evocative scent — and the first fragrance the house released was Green, composed of sage, orange and musk.

From the outset the company framed perfume as a way to capture memory. According to Byredo, the brand was "born from a desire to translate memories and emotions into objects and experiences," and it takes what it calls a sensorial-led approach to creativity. The company describes its work as balancing "the tension between Scandinavian minimalism and bold artistic expression," with attention to raw materials, form and storytelling.

History & milestones

Byredo expanded steadily from a Stockholm fragrance label into a multi-category house. A second store opened in New York's SoHo in 2015, and in 2017 the brand showed its first handbags and accessories collection at Paris Fashion Week [3]. In 2020 it moved into colour cosmetics, launching a makeup line developed in collaboration with the makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench [4]. Fine jewelry followed as a permanent category in November 2023.

The house has also drawn attention through collaborations across fashion and music, working with designer Virgil Abloh in 2018, the furniture retailer IKEA in 2020, and the rapper Travis Scott in 2021.

Ownership

Ownership of Byredo has passed through two stages. In 2013 Gorham sold a majority stake to Manzanita Capital, a London-based investment firm [3]. In May 2022 the Spanish fragrance and fashion group Puig acquired a majority stake from Manzanita, with Gorham and Manzanita retaining holdings; reports at the time put the valuation at around €1 billion, though the parties did not disclose deal terms [4]. By 2025, trade coverage reported that Puig had come to own the company outright [5].

As a Puig brand, Byredo sits alongside sister houses including Penhaligon's, L'Artisan Parfumeur, Rabanne, Nina Ricci, Carolina Herrera and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Philosophy & positioning

Byredo positions itself as a multidisciplinary house rather than a conventional perfumer, describing a vision that spans fragrance, makeup, home and crafted objects and that aims to build what it calls "a living library of collective memories and cultural references." The company states that it remains "committed to creativity as a force for meaning: making timeless objects that resonate deeply in people's lives." In practice this has meant minimalist packaging and a relatively wide product range for a brand rooted in niche perfume.

Products & innovation

Perfume remains the core of the brand, and several of its scents have become its best-known products. Green was the debut fragrance, while Mojave Ghost and Gypsy Water are the names most often cited in press coverage of the house. Beyond perfume, the range covers home fragrance, hand and body care, makeup and a broader line of lifestyle objects.

The brand's own site does not publish detail on signature ingredients, certifications or sustainability commitments, which is common for minimalist luxury houses that keep formulation and sourcing largely undisclosed.

Current status

Byredo is active and trading as part of Puig, which acquired a majority stake in May 2022 and is reported to have since taken full ownership. Its commercial reach is described differently across sources: the brand's own site states it operates across more than 40 countries [1], while trade reporting around the 2022 acquisition put availability at 55 countries and cited 2021 sales of €119 million, up 63 percent year on year [4].

Founder Ben Gorham continued as chief creative officer after the acquisition under an agreement that ran to mid-2025, and he stepped down at the end of June 2025; Puig took over creative direction of the brand, with no single named successor reported [5].
