Summary

Overview

Rabanne is a French fashion and fragrance house, headquartered in Paris and founded in 1966 by the Spanish-born designer Paco Rabanne [7]. It began as an avant-garde couture label known for garments made from unconventional materials, and today is best known in beauty for men's and women's fragrances such as 1 Million and Lady Million, alongside a makeup line introduced in 2023. The house has been part of the Spanish family-controlled group Puig since a perfume partnership that began in 1968, with Puig acquiring the founder's fashion house outright in 1987 [8].

The brand carried the name Paco Rabanne for most of its history. In 2023 it dropped the first name and became simply Rabanne, a change tied to its approaching 60th anniversary and to the death of its founder earlier that year.

Origin and founders

The house was founded by Paco Rabanne, born Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo in Pasaia, Spain, on 18 February 1934. According to the company, he fled the Spanish Civil War for France with his mother — a head seamstress at Balenciaga — and took the name Paco Rabanne there. After training as an architect, he moved into accessory design for Paris couture houses in the early 1960s before starting his own label.

Rabanne's debut show took place on 1 February 1966 at the Hotel George V in Paris. The collection, which the brand frames as a founding manifesto titled "12 unwearable dresses in contemporary materials," presented pieces made of rhodoid plastic lamella and discs linked by metal rings — a technique the company calls Rabanne's signature assemblage. The material-forward approach earned him the nickname "metallurgist of fashion." The brand also states that the show featured Black models on the runway and used a live score by composer Pierre Boulez, which it describes as early social and cultural commitments. Rabanne became known as an "enfant terrible" of 1960s fashion through his use of metal, plastic and paper [6], and designed costumes for Jane Fonda in the 1968 film Barbarella.

History and milestones

A 1968 licensing agreement with the Puig family established the perfume business, and the first fragrance, Calandre, launched in 1969 [7]. The couture label continued in parallel; ready-to-wear was added in 1990 and the couture division was discontinued in 1999.

The founder withdrew from fashion design in 2000, presenting a final haute couture autumn-winter collection. Julien Dossena was appointed artistic director of womenswear in 2013. On the fragrance side, 1 Million launched in 2008 and Lady Million followed in 2010, becoming the house's flagship scents.

Paco Rabanne died on 3 February 2023 at the age of 88 [6]. Roughly five months later, on 28 June 2023, the house rebranded from Paco Rabanne to Rabanne [6] and launched a makeup line. The rebrand date is given precisely as 28 June 2023 by one Wikipedia account, while the brand-house record cites only the year 2023 [7]; both agree on the year. The new logo drew on typography from the bottle of Calandre, the label's first fragrance [9].

Ownership

Rabanne is owned by Puig, a family-controlled Spanish group founded in Barcelona in 1914. Puig's involvement began with the 1968 perfume license, when it incorporated the designer's brand, and deepened in 1987 when it acquired Paco Rabanne's fashion house [8]. Puig's beauty and fashion portfolio also includes Nina Ricci, Carolina Herrera, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dries Van Noten, L'Artisan Parfumeur and Penhaligon's [8]. Puig completed an initial public offering on the Spanish stock exchange in May 2024, joining the country's IBEX 35 index [8].

Philosophy and positioning

The house builds its identity on radical material innovation, tracing it to the founder's early work in rhodoid plastic and metal. The brand positions itself as a pioneer, describing its 1966 debut as a manifesto that challenged conventional ideas of what clothing could be made from. In beauty, its fragrances and makeup are distributed through prestige and department-store channels; the 2023 makeup line was made available through Selfridges, Sephora and Ulta [7].

Products and innovation

Calandre, launched in 1969, was the house's first fragrance and is described as the founder's first and arguably most popular scent [6]. Later releases include XS (1994) and the Million line, anchored by 1 Million for men in 2008 and Lady Million for women in 2010, the latter known for its gold ingot-shaped bottle. 1 Million has been described as one of the most popular men's fragrances worldwide [6]. More recent launches include the Fame line, introduced around 2022 to 2023. The makeup range that accompanied the 2023 rebrand is led by beauty creative director Diane Kendal.

Recognition

Founder Paco Rabanne received the National Fashion Design Award in Spain in 2010 and was named to France's Legion of Honour the same year, recognized for his contributions to arts and fashion [6]. The 2023 rebrand and makeup launch drew coverage in the fashion press, including Fashionista and FashionUnited.
