Overview
ESPA is a British spa and skincare company founded in 1993 by Susan Harmsworth [7]. Built around natural ingredients and spa rituals, it sells skincare, body and hair products and supplies treatments to hotel and resort spas internationally. Since 2017 it has been owned by THG plc (The Hut Group), which trades the brand through THG Beauty Limited [7][8]. The company remains active, with seasonal campaigns and a United Kingdom retail expansion recorded in 2025.
The brand combines aromatherapy and what it calls a holistic approach to wellbeing with skincare formulated at its own factory in Somerset, England. It positions itself in the luxury tier and operates across both retail and professional spa channels.

Origin and founders
ESPA grew out of Susan Harmsworth's earlier career in beauty and wellness. According to the company, she began in fashion and beauty, writing for Vogue in London and New York while working with Vidal Sassoon, before moving to Toronto, where she encountered Eastern European therapy traditions that shaped her interest in holistic treatment. She went on to open a salon in Toronto and later ran a thalassotherapy resort in France and a health farm.
She founded ESPA because the products she wanted did not exist in a usable form. As she put it, "what I wanted wasn't available or only came in industrial quantities." Her aim, the brand says, was to combine clinical aromatherapy with luxury skincare for everyday use, joining prevention-focused treatments to beauty and sensory experience.
Ownership
The Hut Group acquired ESPA in September 2017 from the private-equity firm KSL Capital Partners; terms were not disclosed [7][8]. The brand now sits within THG Beauty, the beauty division of THG plc, alongside other group brands such as Mio Skincare, Mama Mio, Grow Gorgeous and GLOSSYBOX. ESPA's own about page lists THG Beauty Limited as the trading entity behind its website.
Founder Susan Harmsworth left the company in March 2018, after 25 years leading it, saying she wanted to concentrate on spa, integrative medicine, health and wellbeing [7]. At the time of the sale, Paul Gedman, then chief executive of THG Beauty Brands, described ESPA as "a pioneer in spa, wellness and beauty with a highly promising future."
Philosophy and positioning
ESPA describes its approach through three pillars it labels Naturally Powerful, Holistic and Sensorial, summed up in the tagline "Natural Beauty, Inner Calm." The company frames beauty as going "beyond skin deep" and tied to long-term mental, physical and emotional wellbeing, delivered through what it calls multi-sensory experiences across its spas, treatments and products.
This wellness framing runs alongside a more clinical claim: that its formulas pair natural ingredients with biotechnology. The brand says its products use "high-performance actives that support the skin barrier, stimulate skin surface cell renewal and enhance overall skin tone," and refers to "independently proven formulas."
Products and innovation
ESPA's range spans skincare, body and hair care, with skincare as the core. At the centre of its formulating story are what the brand calls Tri-Active blends — combinations of plant actives, marine actives and essential oils — which appear across lines including Tri-Active Resilience, Tri-Active Regenerating and Tri-Active Lift & Firm [8]. Signature products named by the company include the Optimal Skin Pro-Serum, the 24-Hour Replenishing Moisturiser and the Tri-Active Regenerating Phyto-Collagen Plumping Cream. The Pink Hair and Scalp Mud, a mask using vitamin-C-rich watercress, apricot oil and red clay, is a frequently cited item in the hair range.
The brand publishes a detailed "free-from" position. It says it stopped using parabens entirely, replacing them with natural preservatives where possible, and excludes mineral oil because it is petroleum-derived, along with silicone and synthetic colours and fragrances. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are replaced, according to the company, with milder plant-based surfactants such as coco-glucoside and sodium cocoyl sarcosinate [4]. A portion of the range is marketed as vegan-friendly, and selected products carry COSMOS Natural certification.
Manufacturing and sustainability
ESPA manufactures at its own factory in Somerset, England, rather than outsourcing production, and keeps in-house chemists and a research laboratory alongside the plant. The company states the facility holds an EcoVadis Silver award for sustainability and undergoes independent annual audits for quality and safety. It also describes the site as carbon-neutral and uses FSC-certified board packaging. The carbon-neutral description is a brand claim; the separately named third-party recognition is the EcoVadis rating.
Reach and distribution
Beyond retail, ESPA supplies professional spa treatments, and sources differ on the scale of that network. The brand's own about page states a partnership with "500+ properties across 55 countries" [1], while a 2018 WWD report put the figure at "more than 700 spas in 50 countries" [7]; the difference reflects different sources and dates. The company also names a partnership with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.
Current status
ESPA is an active brand. Owned by THG Beauty, it continued marketing and expansion through 2025: it ran a seasonal campaign titled "Your Summer Sanctuary" drawing on its Active Nutrients range, and Marks & Spencer brought ESPA into 105 stores nationwide and online, extending its reach into a more accessible-luxury retail setting [9].
