Overview
F. Hammann is a German family-owned maker of leather goods and travel accessories based in Offenbach am Main, Hesse. Founded in 1864 by Carl-Heinrich Hammann, the company is now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the family and still makes its products in its own workshop in Offenbach [2]. Its range covers wallets, bags, toiletry bags and writing and home accessories, but within beauty and grooming it is known chiefly for leather manicure cases, shaving sets and cosmetic cases fitted with steel instruments from the Solingen tool maker Eschenburg.
The company describes itself as Germany's oldest manufacturer of leather goods and travel accessories [2]. The German retailer Manufactum, which stocks the brand, puts it slightly more cautiously, calling the business one of the oldest leather manufacturers in Germany [14]. More than 160 years after its founding, F. Hammann remains active, selling through its own online shop and retail partners and exhibiting at international trade fairs.
Origin & founders
Carl-Heinrich Hammann opened the workshop in Geleitstrasse, Offenbach, in 1864. The choice of town placed the business in one of Germany's traditional centres of leather work. Manufactum describes Offenbach as one of the German centres of leather goods manufacturing and notes that around 200 leather-processing companies operated in the region in the middle of the 20th century, almost none of which survive [14].
On its German-language pages the company styles itself "F. HAMMANN – Fabrik feiner Lederwaren", which translates as "factory of fine leather goods". Manufactum, for its part, refers to the business as the "Fabrik feiner Lederwaren" Franz Hammann. Franz Hammann was the third-generation owner; the company's own history names Carl-Heinrich Hammann as the founder.
History & milestones
The firm has passed from parent to child through five generations, and its own timeline is built around those handovers. Willy Hammann took over from his father Carl-Heinrich in 1901. The next transition came suddenly: after Willy's unexpected death in 1933, his son Franz had to take charge of the company at the age of 17. Erich Hammann joined the business in 1968, and Hans-Christian Hammann followed in 1994.
Over those decades the workshop kept much of its original equipment. The company says the expertise and the large number of special machines it has built up since its founding have remained in the manufactory, and Manufactum notes that some pieces are still made on old special machines. One example the company highlights is a historic polishing machine used to give its bison-leather models an antiqued surface.
The company reached its 150th year in 2014. A year later, in July 2015, Hans-Christian Hammann presented the range at the Pitti Uomo fair in Florence, where he was interviewed by BACO, an online magazine covering fashion's artisans [12]. Asked why the company had come to Italy, he said it wanted an international window to reach people who do not visit German trade fairs. The magazine described the Hammann family as having worked in men's accessories since 1864 and noted that the company still employed skilled artisans making manicure sets, leather cases and brushes much as they had been made in the 19th century.
Ownership
F. Hammann is privately held by the Hammann family. Its German about page is signed by Erich and Hans-Christian Hammann, described as owners in the fourth and fifth generation [3]. The business is registered as a sole proprietorship (eingetragener Kaufmann) in the name of Hans-Christian Hammann at the Offenbach local court, and trade-fair listings identify the exhibitor as "F. Hammann, Inh. Hans-Christian Hammann". No parent company, outside investor or acquisition is documented.
Philosophy & positioning
The company's central message is that it has stayed in Offenbach. In its own words, it has "rejected all thoughts of relocating our production" in recent decades and invested the energy saved in the know-how of its employees [2]. According to F. Hammann, every stage of production, from cutting the leather to packing the finished product, takes place in-house, and it argues that short distances within the factory let it develop samples quickly. Its tagline, "Since 1864 – 100% Made in Germany", sums up this stance.
Hand work is the second pillar of its self-presentation. The company says its products are made by hand with skills passed down through generations, at a time of industrial mass production, and that its pieces are designed to be passed on in turn. It also refers to "patented and worldwide unique details" in its designs, though it does not name any specific patent.
Much of the range is made to order. F. Hammann explains on its website that its products are produced after an order is placed, so delivery times vary by item; pieces with a delivery time of five to twelve days are, it says, made in weekly runs. Customisation is part of the offer: in the 2015 interview, Hans-Christian Hammann said the company could make bespoke versions of everything, in many colours and combinations.
Products & innovation
Leather goods make up most of the catalogue, but grooming cases are among its most visible lines. For women the company offers manicure cases in several formats, including the Manicure Frame series in sizes from small to extra large, the zip-around Manicure Zip in three sizes and the compact Manicure Compact XS, alongside cosmetic cases. The men's range adds framed and zipped manicure cases, smaller flap-style cases, the Shaving Zipp and Shaving Box sets and a larger grooming case. Retail partners also carry the brand's toiletry bags and makeup bags; Manufactum sells several F. Hammann pieces marked as exclusive to it.
The steel instruments inside these cases are not made by F. Hammann. The company states that all its manicure and grooming sets are equipped with tools from Eschenburg of Solingen [5], a separate German tool maker whose instruments it describes as hand-crafted, with scissor and nipper blades finished by hand sharpening. F. Hammann offers a five-year warranty against manufacturing defects in these tools. Under the heading "Beauty Line – Eschenburg", its website also sells individual Eschenburg instruments, from tweezers and nail clippers to cuticle nippers and shaving accessories.
The leathers are a large part of how the company describes its products. It currently lists an aniline-dyed calfskin tanned for it in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France, a vegetable-tanned box calf and a bison leather tanned in Florence, an embossed calf with crocodile or reptile prints, and a deerskin tanned in Piraeus, Greece [5]. Aniline dyeing colours the hide right through rather than coating its surface, and the company says this lets the leather develop a patina without losing colour. Linings use the same leathers as the outsides. Locks and frames on its bags are milled from solid brass and polished by hand.
The sourcing picture has shifted over time, or at least the way it is described. In the 2015 BACO interview, Hans-Christian Hammann said the company used top-quality leathers of which "most come from Italy" [12]. The current materials page names tanneries in France, Italy and Greece, and the homepage states that the company processes only natural full-grain leather of European origin. Beyond the bags and grooming cases, the 2015 interview named work bags "with a vintage twist" and travel sets as the company's best sellers.
Sustainability
F. Hammann presents durability and repair as its main environmental argument. It offers a lifelong repair service and keeps replacement parts in stock for all its products, so that damaged items can be repaired even after many years [2]. The company describes this in-house repair service as a rarity today and summarises its approach as repairing "what others discard". It also says its leathers and fittings are produced in the European Union under strict legal and environmental standards, and that its leathers are tanned under EU environmental rules.
No third-party environmental or ethical certifications are documented for the brand.
Recognition
Coverage of F. Hammann comes mainly from specialist and trade outlets rather than mainstream beauty media. The 2015 BACO interview, published in an issue on the revival of the barber shop, profiled the company alongside other artisan makers of men's accessories and grooming products. In December 2022 the North American shaving and grooming retailer Fendrihan published a brand profile on its blog, describing F. Hammann as a fifth-generation family business that continues to follow the founders' traditional crafting techniques [13]. Manufactum's manufacturer portrait highlights the company's work on framed bags and cases and its hand-polished fittings.
No awards are documented.
Current status
F. Hammann is active. It operates its own online shop from Offenbach, ships to customers outside Germany and, according to the company, regularly produces special editions for sales partners and foreign markets that are available only there. In October 2026 it was listed as an exhibitor at Ambiente 2027, the consumer-goods fair in Frankfurt am Main scheduled for 29 January to 2 February 2027 [15].
