Summary

Overview

Flora Danica is a Danish fragrance house that launched in spring 2024 with a debut collection of genderless eaux de parfum [7]. The brand was created in-house by Graenn A/S, a Scandinavian beauty incubator within the Matas Group, and it takes its name from the 18th-century Flora Danica botanical atlas commissioned by King Frederik V of Denmark in 1752 [8]. Its perfumes are conceived in Denmark and produced in France, a split the company sums up on its homepage as "Created in Denmark. Made in France."

The house frames each scent as an interpretation of Danish nature, deliberately built to read as neither feminine nor masculine. According to brand director Michael Shin, the vision draws on a Nordic relationship with the outdoors that is "less romantic, more graphic" [6].

Origin and founders

Flora Danica was not spun out of an independent atelier but developed inside Graenn, which describes itself as a curator of Nordic beauty brands. According to trade reporting, the Danish health-and-beauty retailer Matas folded the existing brands Nilens Jord and Miild Beauty into Graenn and created Flora Danica as a new in-house label [8]. The company's registered legal entity, Graenn A/S, is based at Farum, north of Copenhagen.

No individual founder is named. The public face of the project is Michael Shin, credited as brand director, while the fragrances themselves were composed by external perfumers. The brand's name and concept reach back to the Flora Danica encyclopaedia, a state-commissioned survey of the flora of the Danish kingdom. Its first volume appeared in 1761 — a year the house uses as both a product name and a recurring motif — and the work was completed only in 1883, across more than 50 illustrated volumes.

Ownership

Flora Danica is owned by Graenn A/S, which sits within the Matas Group, the Danish retail group behind the Matas chain [8]. Graenn positions itself as an incubator and operator of Scandinavian beauty brands; its portfolio includes Nilens Jord, described on the parent site as a long-established Danish makeup brand, alongside Miild Beauty and BeautyAct. The fragrance line is the incubator's entry into prestige perfumery.

Philosophy and positioning

The company says Flora Danica "celebrates the beauty of nature," with each fragrance presented as a creative interpretation of Danish life and landscape. Its compositions are positioned as genderless: the brand states that the notes and accords are "purposefully blended to offer a fluid interpretation of femininity and masculinity" and that the scents are intended for all genders, with customers encouraged to layer them. The house carries the tagline "A fresh start. A soft reset." Editorially, the brand has been linked to the Scandinavian hygge aesthetic and to the wider movement toward unisex, naturally derived fragrance [6][7].

Products and innovation

The debut collection comprised four genderless eaux de parfum. The current catalogue lists five — 1761, Flower Muse, Amber Echo, Garden Haze and Turn The Page — all classified as eau de parfum [5]. Sources differ on the original line-up: trade coverage of the 2024 launch named the four scents as 1761, Flower Muse, Amber Echo and Soul Garden [7], whereas the brand's present-day site shows Garden Haze in place of Soul Garden and adds Turn The Page, described as "a dream of fresh vanilla" [5]. The shift suggests a later rename or extension rather than a contradiction.

Across the range the perfumes draw on notes such as citrus, cardamom, oak, jasmine tea, iris, ginger and frankincense. The company says its fragrances are vegan, refillable and "composed with up to 92% ingredients of natural origin," and that each contains 20–25% fragrance oil — a concentration it links to greater intensity and longevity. The bottles are designed to be refilled, with caps made of ash wood that the developers described as an ecological alternative to conventional caps, and secondary packaging uses FSC-sourced paper.

Development was handled by the Paris division of Superga Beauty, with the scents composed by perfumers from Firmenich — Nathalie Lorson, Ilias Ermenidis and Olivier Cresp, whose name some trade copy renders as "Olivier Creps" [8]. Production takes place in France, drawing on the perfume-making tradition of Grasse; according to the brand, manufacturing runs through Cosmeurop's facility, with packaging at a BPS Fragrances site.

Recognition

As a 2024 launch, Flora Danica has so far been covered chiefly in the trade and design press rather than recognised through awards. Wallpaper\ introduced it as a new Danish perfume house, while the packaging-industry titles Formes de Luxe and Premium Beauty News* reported on the debut collection, its production arrangements and its ownership structure [6][7][8]. Early distribution included the London department store Liberty.

Current status

The brand is active. Its webshop is live and sells in Danish kroner and euros, and the catalogue has grown from the four-scent 2024 debut to five fragrances, indicating continued development [5]. Distribution spans a Nordic home market with selective international stockists, placing Flora Danica among the recent wave of Scandinavian niche perfume houses rather than as a single-market label.
