Summary

Overview

Nilens Jord is a Danish makeup and skincare brand founded in 1982 and based in central Copenhagen. Its name means "Soil of the Nile", a reference to the ancient Egyptians' early cosmetics and their habit of storing makeup in small clay jars. The brand built its identity around skin-friendly formulas for sensitive and allergy-prone skin, and describes itself as the number-one makeup brand in Denmark. Since 2019 it has been owned by the Danish retailer Matas, and today operates within Grænn, the Matas Group's Nordic beauty brand-building division [3].

Origin and founders

The company was started in 1982 by Lars Jacobsson, according to Danish trade press and the retailer Matas [6]; the English-language editorial Scandinavia Standard records the founder's name as Lars Jacobsen [5]. By the Danish-source account, the idea came from holidays in Spain, where Jacobsson was struck by the glow of the women he saw; from that came the brand's first product, a small clay jar of loose illuminating powder. His wife, Berit Jacobsson, joined the business and, by the brand's telling, became the driving force behind its broader makeup and skincare range as well as the strict ingredient policy that came to define it.

History and milestones

The brand's defining move came in the early 1990s, when, according to Matas, it removed perfume and parabens from all of its products at a time when, the company says, no other Danish cosmetics maker was willing to do the same [6]. It later removed all essential oils as well. These fragrance-free formulas became commercially successful and set the template for the brand's later positioning around sensitive skin.

In 2019 the brand won a Danish Beauty Award for what was described as the world's first AllergyCertified lipstick [8]. The same year marked a change of ownership: Matas acquired Nilens Jord by buying its parent company, Kosmolet A/S, for 135 million DKK, with additional Matas shares and a possible earn-out for the founder [8]. Founder Lars Jacobsson described the sale as a generational transition.

Ownership

Nilens Jord was independently owned by Kosmolet A/S until 2019, when Matas — described in trade coverage as the largest beauty retailer in the Nordics — acquired it [8]. As of 2026 the brand sits within Grænn A/S, the Matas Group's Nordic beauty brand-building division based in Copenhagen [3]. Both descriptions are accurate at different levels: Grænn is the immediate parent, the Matas Group the ultimate owner. Under Grænn, Nilens Jord shares a portfolio with the sister brands BeautyAct and Miild Beauty.

Philosophy and positioning

The brand positions itself around makeup and skincare designed for sensitive and allergy-prone skin, summarised in its Danish tagline "Makeup og hudpleje din hud elsker" — makeup and skincare your skin loves. Central to this is a strict ingredient policy: beyond EU and Danish legislation, the brand says it excludes more than 200 additional typical ingredients, with formulas developed to avoid known harmful allergens [6]. Nilens Jord states that it does not test on animals, though it is explicitly not a vegan brand — some products contain beeswax or other animal-derived substances. In editorial coverage it has been placed between the high-end Kjær Weis and the more affordable GOSH Copenhagen, suggesting a mid-to-premium position in the Danish market.

Products and innovation

The brand's original and most recognisable product is the clay jar of loose illuminating mineral powder that launched it in 1982; Matas editorial has framed this jar as a cult classic [9]. Other long-standing products include the Mascara Jumbo, cited as a best-seller, the Silky Cream Lipstick, and mineral powders and bronzers. The Lash Definition Mascara is formulated with the peptide Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1 and provitamin B5, which the brand says nourish and support the lashes [7]. A large number of products carry the Danish AllergyCertified mark. The range extends beyond colour cosmetics into skincare, nail products, hair care and a men's line.

Recognition

Beyond the 2019 Danish Beauty Award for its AllergyCertified lipstick, the brand was featured in 2017 by Scandinavia Standard in a guide to Danish makeup brands, where it was described as natural, free of perfume and parabens, and gentle on sensitive skin [5].

Current status

Nilens Jord remains active. In 2025 it introduced a Hydra Glow Vitamin C series — a serum, day cream and eye serum — along with a Baked Mineral Eyeshadow [10]. The brand's core market is Denmark, where it reports the highest brand awareness in its category, with wider distribution across the rest of Scandinavia [2].
