Overview
GLYNT is a German professional haircare brand owned by Hans Conzen Kosmetik GmbH and based in Tangstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, near Hamburg. It makes salon-exclusive shampoos, treatments, styling products and hair colour sold mainly through hairdressers, and the company reports that its products are used in more than 15,000 salons worldwide [3]. The brand remains active, with a current online store, a 2021 brand relaunch and ongoing distribution across German-speaking Europe.
The company traces its roots to a small family business begun in a modest apartment in Hamburg-Altona [1]. Its founding date is recorded in two ways on the company's own history page: 1954, when Hans Heinrich Conzen (with his wife, Marlene Conzen) started a pharmaceutical import business, and 1968, when the couple expanded into Hans Conzen Kosmetik GmbH [5]. The 1968 company is the hair-cosmetics venture that grew into GLYNT and is the date most often cited as the company's founding; the 1954 business is its earlier predecessor.
Origin and founders
GLYNT grew out of a distribution business rather than an original cosmetics line. In 1968 Hans Conzen Kosmetik GmbH was set up to distribute the Swiss hair-cosmetics brand ANIFA, and the company says it reached DM 300,000 in turnover in its first year [5]. When it later lost the ANIFA distribution rights, it began developing its own formulas, among them the STRUKTAL foam treatment and a hair conditioner sold under the name GLYNT [5]. That in-house conditioner is where the brand name comes from.
History and milestones
Through the 1970s and 1980s the company expanded through a series of moves within the Hamburg area and a growing sales force. A second generation took over in 1998, when Stephan Conzen assumed management and broadened the range to include oxidative hair dyes [5]; by 2000 the company reported turnover of about four million euros [5]. Hans Heinrich Conzen died in 2008.
A comprehensive brand relaunch followed in 2012. The company relocated again in 2016 to larger production premises, and in 2017 it launched a sister brand, GRAHAM HILL, a men's grooming line under the same parent company [5]. A further relaunch came in 2021, after nine years in the previous design [5]. According to the company, it now employs around 90 people at its Tangstedt headquarters, supported by roughly 50 sales representatives across Germany, Austria and the Netherlands [5].
Products and positioning
GLYNT presents itself as a premium salon-exclusive brand for professional hairdressers, summarised by its line "professional hair care and styling products from the salon for use at home." Its bestsellers include the REVITAL Shampoo for coloured hair and the HYDRO Shampoo, alongside care ranges such as Volume, Nutri and Sun Care and styling products for smoothing, curls and texture. The colour and treatment side includes named programmes the company markets as proprietary, among them Trijuven©, described by the company as "the therapy for hair rejuvenation," and Mangala, a tinting treatment line [3]. The company frames its approach as combining "nature with science" for the care of healthy hair.
The brand also describes a range of professional support around its products, including more than 1,000 seminars a year for salon staff, dedicated sales representatives and a specialist application hotline.
Sustainability
GLYNT makes several environmental and product claims, all stated by the company itself. It says most of its packaging — bottles, tubes and jars — has been converted to recycled materials in a closed-loop system, and that shipping boxes and filling materials are made from 100% recycled paper [4]. The company describes its products as dermatologically tested and, with a few exceptions, vegan, and it lists a self-declared "Cruelty Free" claim; no named certifying body is cited in the available material.
Recognition
The brand's main documented recognition comes from the German trade magazine FRISEUR INTERN, which it says voted GLYNT "Hairdressing Partner of the Year" for the eleventh consecutive time [3]. No English-language consumer beauty editorial coverage was found for the brand, which is consistent with its position as a German salon-trade name rather than a mass-market consumer brand.
Current status
GLYNT is active. The company operates a current e-commerce store with seasonal ranges, maintains active social accounts, and continues salon distribution, with its 2021 relaunch the most recent major brand update on record [2].
