Summary

Overview

Grown Alchemist is an Australian skincare company founded in Melbourne in 2008 [5]. It built its identity around pairing botanical ingredients with biotechnology, and positions its formulas under the line "The Alchemy of Total Skin Health." The brand sells skincare, body care, hand care and hair care across more than 40 countries, with flagship stores in Melbourne, London and Hong Kong.

The company remains active, publishing blog content into 2026 and trading through an international e-commerce operation. Its ownership has changed twice in recent years: a majority stake passed to the L'Occitane Group in 2022 [7], before the brand was sold again in 2024 to investor André Hoffmann through his vehicle Lavender Investments [5].

Origin & founders

Grown Alchemist was established in Melbourne by brothers Keston and Jeremy Muijs [5][7]. Before launching the brand, the siblings had been developing products for other companies and clients. According to the retailer editorial that recounts the origin, their research convinced them that the consistent use of "the right, naturally potent ingredients" was all the skin needed to stay healthy and radiant, and that conviction shaped the brand they built in 2008.

From the start the company combined plant-derived ingredients with laboratory science, and presented its range as gender-neutral with a minimalist, design-led aesthetic. Editorial coverage describes its early identity as leaving behind "a gendered skincare experience" in favour of pared-back, unisex packaging.

Ownership

Ownership of Grown Alchemist has shifted twice in the 2020s. In March 2022 the L'Occitane Group acquired a majority stake in the business, describing it at the time as a "cosmeceutical, clean skincare brand" [7]. The percentage acquired was not disclosed.

That arrangement lasted about two years. On 3 April 2024, L'Occitane sold its entire stake for €28 million (A$46 million) to André Hoffmann, the former vice-chairman and chief executive of L'Occitane International, who took a controlling interest through his company Lavender Investments [5]. Chief executive Anna Teal also acquired a minority shareholding in the new structure [5]. Hoffmann is the same executive who had led L'Occitane's original purchase of the brand in 2022, making him both the acquirer for the group and, later, its individual buyer.

Philosophy & positioning

The company frames its approach around what it calls a balance between "the wisdom of nature and the precision of science." Its central premise, as stated on its about page, is that "your skin has the ability to transform when you give it exactly what it needs." Grown Alchemist describes its products as "plant-powered, science boosted skincare," engineered to counter the effects of urban living on the skin and built on formulations it states are more than 94% natural [2].

That "94% natural" framing is the brand's own conservative figure. A separate, uncited claim describing the range as 100% natural, gluten-free and PETA-certified has circulated, but it was not confirmed on the company's own pages; the brand's about page states the lower figure, and no specific certifying body for the cruelty-free or vegan claims is named on its current site.

Positioning is gender-neutral and design-conscious, aimed at what one editorial profile calls "discerning skincare fans looking for high-quality skincare that doesn't cost the earth." The brand presents skincare as a considered, everyday ritual rather than a single hero treatment.

Products & innovation

Biotechnology sits at the centre of how the company explains its formulations. Grown Alchemist defines biotech ingredients as those "derived from natural, biological sources—plants, algae, yeast, and other organisms" using methods such as fermentation, plant cell cultures and enzyme technology [3]. Rather than harvesting large quantities of raw plant material, it says this approach lets it "replicate and even enhance active compounds in a lab setting," which it presents as less resource-intensive and more compatible with the skin's own biology.

Across its blog and product pages, the company highlights items such as the Enzyme Exfoliator, the Regenerating Night Cream, the Skin Renewal Serum and a Gentle Gel Facial Cleanser, alongside body, hand and lip products. The range spans skincare, body care, hand care and hair care, and the brand also offers refills and travel sizes.

Ethics & sustainability

Editorial coverage describes Grown Alchemist skincare as vegan-friendly and cruelty-free, and notes an emphasis on sustainable ingredients and "minimally-wasteful packaging." The company itself ties its environmental position to its biotech sourcing, which it argues is less water-, land- and resource-intensive than conventional harvesting, and states that its "commitment extends beyond beauty—it embraces responsibility" [2]. No specific third-party certifications were confirmed on the brand's current pages.

Current status

As of mid-2026 Grown Alchemist is active. Its website continues to publish editorial content, with a blog post dated 9 March 2026, and the brand reports distribution across more than 40 countries with flagship stores in Melbourne, London and Hong Kong. Ownership has been stable under André Hoffmann's Lavender Investments since April 2024 [5].
