L'Occitane Group
5 brands · founded 1976 · LuxembourgL'Occitane Group is a multinational holding company in the cosmetics, skincare and wellness sector, registered as L'Occitane International S.A. in Luxembourg and operating from a global headquarters there. The group traces its commercial roots to L'Occitane en Provence, the Provençal skincare and body-care brand founded in 1976 by Olivier Baussan [3]; the holding company itself was incorporated in 2000 to sit above that business and the brands added to it since.
The group describes itself as the owner of a portfolio of premium beauty brands, and it runs regional offices in Geneva, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York and São Paulo alongside the Luxembourg base. Once listed in Hong Kong, it was taken private by its controlling shareholder in 2024 [4].
History & milestones
The founding brand, L'Occitane en Provence, grew out of Olivier Baussan's work with plant-based ingredients from the south of France in 1976 [3]. As the business expanded internationally, its owners consolidated it under a holding structure, incorporating the parent company in 2000 [3]. Over the following two decades the group moved from a single-brand operation toward a multi-brand house, adding beauty companies from France, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Brazil through a series of acquisitions.
The group was publicly listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange before returning to private ownership in 2024, when it was delisted following a buyout led by its controlling shareholder [4].
Portfolio & brands
According to the group's corporate site, its brands are L'Occitane en Provence, Sol de Janeiro, Elemis, Erborian, Melvita, L'Occitane au Brésil and Dr. Vranjes Firenze [2]. The portfolio spans body and skincare (L'Occitane en Provence, Sol de Janeiro), professional and spa-oriented skincare (Elemis), Korean-inspired skincare (Erborian), organic and natural beauty (Melvita), a Brazil-focused line (L'Occitane au Brésil) and home fragrance (Dr. Vranjes Firenze). L'Occitane en Provence remains the group's founding and namesake brand.
Acquisitions & strategy
The group built its portfolio largely by acquisition. It bought the organic and natural beauty brand Melvita in 2008, and the Korean-inspired skincare brand Erborian in 2012 [3]. In 2017 it acquired LimeLife by Alcone [2]. In 2019 it added the British skincare brand Elemis in a deal reported at US$900 million [3].
The group continued to broaden its reach in the following years. In 2021 it took an 83% stake in Sol de Janeiro, a Brazilian-inspired body-care brand [3]. In 2022 it acquired a majority stake in Grown Alchemist, a holding it later divested in 2024 [3]. Taken together, the acquisitions moved the group into higher-growth body care and international skincare categories beyond its Provençal origins.
Ownership
The group operates as a private company. In April 2024 its controlling shareholder, Reinold Geiger, offered to take the business private, and the buyout — valued in reporting at more than €6 billion and financed in part by Blackstone and Goldman Sachs Asset Management — resulted in the company's delisting from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange [4]. Control is held by Geiger through the vehicle L'Occitane Groupe S.A. [4]. The prior public listing in Hong Kong, which had run since 2010, ended with that transaction.
