Summary

Overview

Elemis is a British skincare company founded in London in 1989. It built its reputation on a blend of aromatherapy and clinically tested formulas, anchored by the Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, and grew from a spa-focused range into a prestige skincare label sold in more than 45 countries. Since 2019 it has been owned by the French-rooted Groupe L'Occitane, which bought the company for US$900 million [5].

The brand operates today as a premium label within its parent group rather than as an independent company. Its founding date is recorded slightly differently across sources: Elemis dates itself to 1989 [1], while the retailer Cult Beauty gives the year as 1988 [4].

Origin and founders

Elemis was started by three people with complementary backgrounds: Noella Gabriel, Sean Harrington and Oriele Frank, whose specialities spanned product development, aromatherapy and commercial leadership. The early range focused on body care and a pared-down set of facial products before the line broadened toward the science-led skincare the company is now known for.

From the start the brand tied itself to aromatherapy and a "holistic" idea of skincare. Elemis describes itself as "a skin wellness brand with an aromatherapist's soul, an artist's spirit, and a scientist's commitment to results," and works under the guiding phrase "truth in beauty."

History and milestones

The House of ELEMIS, a flagship spa in London's Mayfair, opened in 2001 and gave the brand a physical home for its treatments. Two years later, in 2003, it launched the Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, the product that would become its signature. A patented Tri-Enzyme Technology followed in 2006, and in 2015 the brand introduced its BIOTEC range of bio-electric professional treatments.

Expansion into the United States came in 2018 through a partnership placing the line in roughly 600 ULTA Beauty stores. The acquisition by Groupe L'Occitane followed in 2019. More recently, the company opened its first stand-alone store, on Monmouth Street in Covent Garden, in 2024. In 2025, Cosmetics Business reported a leadership transition in which Noella Gabriel succeeded Sean Harrington as chief executive, while co-founder Oriele Frank left the business after 33 years [3].

Ownership

Groupe L'Occitane, a Luxembourg-registered holding company that manages a portfolio of beauty and personal-care brands operating across more than 90 countries, acquired Elemis in 2019 for US$900 million [5]. Within that group, Elemis sits alongside sister brands including L'Occitane en Provence, Melvita, Erborian and Sol de Janeiro, and functions as the group's premium British skincare label, distributed through spas, cruise lines and retail partners in the UK and US.

Philosophy and positioning

Elemis positions itself as a skin-wellness brand that pairs an aromatherapy heritage with clinically tested, science-led skincare. The company frames its mission as creating "a skincare range as close to nature as possible" while delivering results it says are backed by clinical trials. It organises this around four stated pillars: skin wellness, proven results, feel-good skincare and what it calls transparent innovation, noting that its products are developed at a London innovation hub and manufactured in England.

The brand is positioned at the prestige end of the market. According to Cult Beauty, individual products range from roughly €18 to €80 and upward, with bundled collections valued above €100 [4].

Products and innovation

The Pro-Collagen Marine Cream remains the brand's defining product. Introduced as a lightweight gel-cream at a time when richer formulas were the convention for mature skin, it is marketed on a claim of "intense moisture and younger-looking skin in just 14 days" [1]. Cosmetics Business reported that, more than two decades after launch, the cream sells one unit every 14 seconds globally and has won more than 100 industry awards [3].

Beyond Pro-Collagen, the range includes the Superfood collection, built around what the company describes as prebiotics, vitamins and fermented plant actives, and the Dynamic Resurfacing line, which uses the patented Tri-Enzyme technology aimed at cell turnover. An ultra-premium ULTRA SMART Pro-Collagen line arrived in 2019. The company's proprietary technologies include the Tri-Enzyme Technology, patented in 2006, and its BIOTEC professional treatments. On formulation, the brand says its products are free of parabens, phthalates and aluminium [4].

Recognition

Elemis has been recognised in the British beauty trade, including a Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) award for Best British Brand in 2014 and a Best Premium Skincare Brand listing from The Sunday Times Style in 2020 [1].

Controversies

Elemis is not certified cruelty-free or vegan as a brand. PETA classifies it as a company that "may not be cruelty-free" and does not list it in its cruelty-free database, noting that Elemis has not signed PETA's statement of assurance [6]. Cruelty-free advocacy sources link the concern to sales in mainland China and to parent company L'Occitane. The company states that some of its products are vegan-friendly and that it bans more than 2,000 ingredients, including parabens [6].

Current status

Elemis remains active and continues to operate as a premium skincare brand under Groupe L'Occitane following the 2019 acquisition. Its scope is global, and recent activity includes the 2024 opening of its first stand-alone store and the 2025 leadership changes at the top of the company.
