James Heeley was born in Yorkshire, England, and studied philosophy and aesthetics at King's College, University of London, before settling in Paris [3]. He came to perfumery from design rather than formal training in the field. According to the house, it was through his design work in France that he discovered how scents are "designed" and made, and he went on to compose fragrances himself as a self-taught perfumer.

His early work, Menthe Fraîche, dates to 2006 and is described by the company as a contemporary and highly wearable scent built around an ingredient it calls simple yet difficult to work with: mint. The house treats this fragrance as the beginning of its story.

Heeley approaches fragrance through design principles, an outlook the company traces to its founder's background.
