Overview
Henné Organics is an American lip-care company founded in 2015 by Laura Xiao, with her Swedish husband involved from the first product [5]. It started with a single organic lip balm mixed in the couple's home kitchen in the Nevada desert and has grown into a compact range of lip tints, exfoliators, a lip serum and a lip mask, alongside a few face and hand products. Everything is formulated and made in small batches in-house in Wilmington, North Carolina, where the company is now based.
The brand combines certified organic formulas with pared-back packaging that it describes as Scandinavian in spirit. It remains independent and active, and it continues to publish new material on its own website in 2026.
Origin & founders
Laura Xiao's route into beauty was unusual. According to PureWow, she grew up in Kansas City as a professional table tennis player, took the number-one title in the 9–12 age bracket and was a member of the U.S. junior national girls' team at 17 [10]. Beauty Independent gives her hometown as Overland Park, Kansas. After college she spent several years abroad, living in Sweden from 2012 to 2014 and also in Denmark, Australia and New Zealand.
Those years shaped the business in two ways. Beauty Independent reports that Xiao saw a well-developed market for natural beauty products in those countries that she felt was missing in the United States. PureWow adds that moving between countries made her pare her belongings down to essentials, a habit that later became the minimalist ethos of the brand. Xiao has also credited the values instilled by her Chinese parents as a factor in building the company.
In 2014 she returned to Las Vegas and began formulating products to counter the drying effect of the desert climate on lips. The company's own account describes her search for an organic lip balm that worked, was clean and also looked good, and presents the brand as the result of combining organic ingredients with minimalist Scandinavian design. "My Swedish husband Axel joined in," Xiao writes on the brand's website, "and the first product came right out of our home kitchen: the USDA Certified Organic Luxury Lip Balm" [2].
Sources differ in how they describe the founding team. The company's website presents Xiao alone as Founder & CEO and refers to her husband only as Axel. Beauty Independent, writing in 2017, names him as Johan Axelqvist and describes the pair as co-founders who started the business in May 2015 [9].
The brand's nationality has also been described in two ways. In September 2015 the Danish magazine Eurowoman called it "a Swedish/American organic lip care brand", a nod to the Swedish co-founder and the Scandinavian design influence [6]. The company itself was founded and has always produced in the United States.
History & milestones
Henné Organics began with an initial investment of $6,000 and, according to Beauty Independent, became profitable within its first year [9]. The early growth came through specialty retail rather than mass-market channels. By November 2017 the line had grown from one product to nine, including lip exfoliators and stick-format lip balms, and was carried in about 250 stores. Stockists at the time included Anthropologie, CAP Beauty, Credo, The Detox Market, Beauty Collection and Take Care.
That year the brand made its first move into department stores through Belk, a department-store chain based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Beauty Independent reported annual revenue growth of 150 per cent, with the company projecting that its third-year revenue would be triple that of its second [9]. The same article placed the company in Las Vegas.
The company later moved its operations to Wilmington, North Carolina, which its website now calls "our hometown" [3]. All production takes place there, handled in-house by what the company calls its "small but mighty" team. The year of the move has not been publicly documented.
In April 2024 PureWow included Henné Organics at number seven in a list of 21 beauty brands owned by Asian American and Pacific Islander founders. The brand marked ten years in business in 2025.
Ownership
No parent company, outside investor or acquisition is documented. Xiao leads the business as Founder & CEO, and the company has no listed sister brands.
Philosophy & positioning
The company sums up its mission as "The World's Cleanest Lip Care" and uses the tagline "Unbelievably Moisturizing Lip Care". Its website frames the products around a single problem: lips that stay dry despite constant reapplication of balm. In the brand's own words, it wants to offer "beauty products that truly work, ingredients you can trust", and packaging attractive enough that people want to reach for it.
Four ideas recur in how Henné Organics presents itself: small-batch production in its own facility, USDA Organic certification, Leaping Bunny cruelty-free certification and a minimalist look drawn from Scandinavian design. The company says every step of its process is carried out "as ethically, humanely and naturally as possible", and it describes its formulas as all natural, non-GMO and gluten free.
Xiao has described the company as part of a new generation of independent beauty labels. Speaking to Beauty Independent in 2017, she argued that the advantage of smaller brands over large companies lay in keeping ingredient quality high and "not shaving off a few cents from production costs to boost margins".
Products & innovation
The range has stayed narrow and centred on the lips. Alongside the original Luxury Lip Balm, the company sells tinted lip balms under the Luxury Lip Tint name, lip exfoliators, an anti-ageing lip serum with a rollerball applicator and a nourishing lip mask. Its online shop also has sections for face, hands and accessories, covering items such as the Serene Face Oil, hand creams and lip-care kits.
Several plant oils recur across the line. Coverage collected by the company points to sea buckthorn and evening primrose oils in the lip mask, and to cloudberry and lingonberry seed oils, two Nordic berries, together with rosehip in the lip serum. The balms are built on oils and waxes including coconut oil, jojoba oil and beeswax. The company notes that its vitamin E comes from non-GMO soy and that the face oil, lip serum and lip tints are free of essential oils.
On certification, Henné Organics says its facility, processes and products are USDA Certified Organic, which it calls "the strictest organic certification there is" [3]. Its FAQ lists the lip balms, serum, mask and exfoliators among the certified products. The company is also certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny [3]. It does not market itself as vegan: by its own account, beeswax is the only ingredient it uses that could be considered animal-derived.
Sustainability
Packaging is limited to glass jars and bottles and aluminium for stick products. The company says all of its packaging can be partly or fully recycled and suggests reusing the containers.
The brand's main social commitment is local. Henné Organics has partnered with First Fruit Ministries, a Wilmington charity that has worked against human trafficking and homelessness for more than 20 years. According to the company, a portion of every order placed on its website goes to the charity's work, which includes supportive housing, street outreach and meals [4].
Recognition
Independent coverage began in trade media. Beauty Independent's 2017 profile followed the brand's department-store launch and its early finances. PureWow's 2024 list of AAPI-owned brands described the tinted lip balm as one of its writers' favourite products of all time [10].
The company's press page collects excerpts from a wide range of consumer publications. They include Allure, Vogue, W Magazine, Glamour, People, Oprah Daily, Forbes, NBC News Select and the New York Post, as well as Elle España and Vogue Girl Japan. Many are product round-ups featuring the lip mask, tints, exfoliators or hand cream, while an Allure feature on brands founded by Asian Pacific Americans quoted Xiao on her path to becoming an entrepreneur. No industry awards are documented.
Current status
Henné Organics is active. Its blog publishes new posts roughly every two weeks, the most recent dated 1 October 2026 [7]. The company runs its own online shop, ships internationally and sells through spas, boutiques and specialty beauty retailers such as Bluemercury, Anthropologie and The Detox Market. Its stockist list covers about 35 U.S. states, along with a number of online retailers [8].
