Overview
Inglot is a Polish cosmetics company founded by the chemist Wojciech Inglot. Its headquarters and main laboratories are in Przemyśl, in south-eastern Poland, where the company says 95 percent of its products are still manufactured. Best known for colour cosmetics and nail products, Inglot built its reputation on a wide shade range and two concepts that became closely associated with the name: the Freedom System of refillable magnetic palettes and the O2M breathable nail enamel.
The company places its founding in 1983 [8], though it did not begin as a beauty brand. It first produced cleaning liquids and stick deodorants, and its move into cosmetics came later in the decade; Wikipedia records its first nail polish in 1987 [8]. The brand and its corporate site both treat 1983 as the founding year, a date carried in the product line named "Inglot Lab 1983" and in the company's reference to more than 40 years in operation.
Origin and founders
Wojciech Inglot, a chemist from Przemyśl, started the business in 1983, during the final years of communist-era Poland. According to the company, the early product was a super-colour nail polish, and the white-pearl shade numbered six became a hit in the Polish market — the success that pushed the company from household goods into beauty. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s the range widened: pressed eyeshadows in 1989, lipsticks and foundations by 1993. In 1994 the company relocated its headquarters to Przemyśl, the city that remains its production base.
History and milestones
Inglot's expansion abroad began in 2006, when it opened its first overseas store in Montreal, Canada. The following years brought the products most identified with the brand: the Duraline mixing medium, the Freedom System palette concept, and the AMC gel eyeliner all date to the late 2000s on the company's own timeline. In 2013 the company introduced its O2M breathable nail enamel, and in 2017 it added the Inglot Lab skincare line.
Founder Wojciech Inglot died on 23 February 2013. Most reporting, including MaltaToday, CosmeticsDesign and Fox News, gave his age as 57 [9][12], though one account recorded 58. At the time of his death, MaltaToday described a company with "nearly 400 stores in some 50 countries" [9].
Philosophy and positioning
Inglot positions itself around the line "beauty inspired by science." The company describes beauty as both a form of self-expression and "the result of a thoughtful and meticulous process, rooted in science" [1], and frames its laboratories as the centre of its product development. Its stated values include what it calls science-led and functional beauty, an extensive colour system, inclusivity, sustainability and heritage. The corporate mission is summarised as "empowering beauty worldwide through exceptional products, inclusive community & unwavering trust." The brand's portfolio is organised into three lines — Core, Playinn and Inglot Lab 1983 — spanning makeup, accessories and skincare.
Products and innovation
Two ideas define Inglot's product story. The first is the Freedom System, which the company calls a personalised palette concept: a magnetic, refillable case that the brand says can hold up to 40 products and lets customers assemble their own sets of eyeshadows, blushes, powders, lipsticks and other items in one reusable palette. The company presents it as both a customisation tool and a more environment-friendly format. Alongside it, the AMC Eyeliner Gel and the Duraline mixing liquid — which Inglot describes as a "cult-favorite" — round out the makeup range that the company says made its name.
The second is the O2M Breathable Nail Enamel, introduced in 2013. Inglot describes it as a polish that "allows water and air to pass through thanks to its special ingredient – a highly advanced polymer," intended to keep nails in better condition during wear [7]. The formula is marketed as free of toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate and camphor.
Recognition and culture
The O2M enamel drew attention well beyond its performance claims. Because it was promoted as water-permeable, it became widely discussed as a potentially "wudu-friendly" nail polish for Muslim wearers, who ordinarily remove polish before ritual ablution. Beautylish reported that after Shaykh Mustafa Umar, an Islamic educator in Orange County, wrote that the product could be suitable for wudu, "orders for O2M have been pouring in" [10]. The episode tied the brand to the broader halal-beauty conversation.
Inglot has also worked with figures from fashion and entertainment. The English-language Wikipedia entry names collaborations with Kenzo, Michael Costello and Francesco Scognamiglio, and notes that on 26 April 2018 Jennifer Lopez debuted a limited-edition capsule collection with the brand [8].
Controversies
The O2M "breathable" claim has been contested. Some independent permeability tests by bloggers — including improvised coffee-filter experiments — produced mixed results, raising doubt over whether the polish lets through enough water to satisfy the requirements of wudu [10]. Others argued that wearing nail polish was never religiously prohibited in the first place, making the "halal" framing a misnomer rather than a genuine permission. Reporting indicates a halal endorsement was associated with the Muslim League in Poland.
Sustainability and manufacturing
Inglot emphasises local production: the company states that 95 percent of its products are made at its Przemyśl headquarters, a choice it links to minimising environmental impact and keeping full control over each stage of development [1]. It says more than 70 percent of its portfolio is certified vegan, that it is listed as cruelty-free by PETA, and that many products are halal certified. The company has held a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certificate since 2011.
Current status
Inglot remains active and independent, run in connection with the founding family and still manufacturing in Przemyśl. The company reports a presence in more than 90 countries, across over 2,000 retail locations and more than 200 e-commerce platforms [1] — figures considerably larger than the "nearly 400 stores in some 50 countries" cited around the founder's death in 2013 [9], reflecting growth over the intervening decade. Wikipedia gives a figure of more than 950 boutique stores in 90 countries [8]. Recent corporate activity includes a private-label presence at Cosmoprof Bologna in 2025 [11].
