Summary

Overview

Kenzo Fragrance is the beauty arm of the French house Kenzo, operating as Kenzo Parfums and spanning perfume and skincare. The parent house was founded in Paris in 1970 by the Japanese designer Kenzo Takada, who had moved to the city in 1964 and opened a women's clothing boutique there [2]. Fragrance was added in 1988, and since 1993 the brand has belonged to the luxury-goods group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton [6].

Within Glowjakt the entity is the beauty line rather than the fashion label: its categories are fragrance and the KenzoKi skincare range. This is one point where the sources differ in emphasis — Kenzo Parfums presents itself as a fragrance and skincare house [1], while Wikipedia's infobox classifies Kenzo as a fashion company because that article covers the parent house [2]. The underlying identity facts — 1970, Takada, Paris, LVMH ownership — are shared across both.

Origin and founders

Kenzo grew out of Takada's Paris boutique, opened in 1964, and was established as a house in 1970. The clothing line broadened over the following years, reaching men's, children's and home collections by 1987, with fragrance following in 1988. Takada led the house until his retirement in 1999 [6]; he died in October 2020.

Ownership

Kenzo, including Kenzo Parfums, was acquired by LVMH in 1993, with the company reporting a price of about 80 million dollars [2]. The purchase placed the brand alongside other LVMH perfume and cosmetics houses such as Guerlain, Acqua di Parma, Givenchy and Dior. Kenzo Parfums continues to operate as an active LVMH perfumes-and-cosmetics maison.

Products and innovation

Kenzo Parfums released its first fragrance, Kenzo for Women — also marketed as Kenzo Kenzo — in 1988; the scent was later renamed Ça Sent Beau, meaning "it smells nice" [6]. The brand's best-known release is Flower by Kenzo, launched in 2000 and created by the perfumer Alberto Morillas. According to LVMH, it was built from the poppy, "a flower with no scent," as a symbol of resilience and ephemeral beauty [4]. The Perfume Society describes the composition as an interpretation of a scentless flower rather than a reproduction of one, with notes of Bulgarian rose, parma violet and white musk, and frames the fragrance as having become "synonymous with modern, urban femininity" [3].

Skincare arrived in 2006 with KenzoKi, introduced to the United States by Kenzo Parfums' North American arm [5]. The line draws on the idea of "Ki" and is organised into four groups — Bamboo Leaf, Ginger Flower, White Lotus and Rice Steam — with the Rice Steam range launched in 2006 [7]. The company says its formulations are developed with the Gattefossé laboratories.

Philosophy and positioning

Flowers sit at the centre of the brand's stated identity. Kenzo Parfums describes flowers as symbolising its values — "a love of nature, openness, youthfulness, joy and optimism" — and says the house is committed to protecting and planting them. On sustainability, the company states a target of reducing fossil-based virgin plastic by 30 percent by 2026, says its skincare has contained at least 90 percent natural ingredients since 2021, and notes that signature ingredients such as rose, orange blossom and sandalwood are evaluated by the Union for Ethical BioTrade [1].

Recognition

Flower by Kenzo received the "Fragrance of the Year – Women's Luxury" award from the Fragrance Foundation in 2002 [4]. The Perfume Society notes the fragrance has "captivated wearers for over two decades."

Current status

Kenzo has been part of LVMH since its acquisition in 1993 and remains in operation; the parent house was reported to run 104 stores worldwide in 2025, and Kenzo Parfums continues as an active perfumes-and-cosmetics maison within the group [2].
